Hopefully if Turkey wins it can put the investment in required to actually win some medals. Not a fan of countries which don't win medals getting the games. Just me. I like rooting for the home team (when USA is not in the match of course) and Athens was depressing.

Yeah its pretty pathetic! They just set up a sports ministry last year, too little too late.

I'm watching the Croatia vs. Angola handball match, but it's hard to learn the sport without commentary. Why do they sometimes dribble? Whats the dotted arch for around the perimeter? Aghh

Probably because they're busy training every hour of every day to perfect their skills as archers, rather than training the same amount to physical perfection which is largely unnecessary in archery.

I thought they would at least need to be somewhat fit to compete in archery, guess not.

Swimming heats up now.

8 years is plenty of time to develop athletes for most sports.

Yeah but it takes a large upfront investment. Most countries ramp it up as the games get closer so they peak AFTER the games. Like the USA and its investments for 2002 were very late. So while we did well in 2002 the athletes that were produced by the program actually won medals during 2010 at Vancouver.

"Walking’
If a handball player takes more than three steps without dribbling (bouncing the ball) or holds the ball for more than 3 seconds without bouncing it, shooting or passing, then that is deemed ‘walking’ and possession is lost.

'Double dribble’
Handball players cannot receive the ball and bounce it, then hold the ball, and bounce it again. This is termed ‘double dribble’ and is against the rules."

Dotted line: Free throw line.

Men would still dominate probably.

Not really, it's just a question of depth of field. Some of the best olympic records are by women. Korean ladies team would compete for gold everytime, get that tradition everywhere and you're set.

Maybe they had a massive archery orgy yesterday, and chest protectors were exchanged.

Lucky bastards :(

My waifu would never engage in such activities.

I dont know about shooting but there is a weight difference in the mens and womens bows for archery
Yeah, that can make a difference, especially in the wind.
Haven't seen a good reason yet, best score in team's event was by a women's team. I guess the olympics alway separate by genders, but in the 'world cup' or equivalent there's no excuse.
Yeah, I think it would be far more interesting if those events simply determined the best shooter in the world, be it man or woman.
Of course, there would be half as many medals to win, so those who aren't absolute best would not like that. And come to think of it, if the events were combined, the tensions between male and female athletes could be really big (ie. men would probably try to discriminate women).

best part of beach volleyball is when they get multiple blocks in a row

it seems so demoralizing for the other team but so energizing for the team blocking

Thanks for the info. They will probably never show the sport on television during this olympics since no American teams are in, so I have to resort to the online broadcasts sans commentary :/

I wouldn't be surprised if they're trained without them. It is better to become great at your sport without the stabilisers so when they're put on your performance is effortless.

Well for me it kinda ruins the sport, the rifle and pistol shooters have eye patches and special jackets that help them hold the gun. I'd rather see them simply test their shooting ability without the aids.

You can make three steps without dribbling if I remember correctly. The dotted line is the free-throw limit (like free kicks in football/soccer).

Support the french team ! :)

Why? I mean the target distance and diameter take these 'assists' into consideration.
In Archery the target is 70m aways and the golden 10ring has a diameter of 12,2cm (whole target is 122cm).

In 10m Air Rifle the target ist just 455mm wide with the bullseyse having a diameter of 0.5mm.

(Badminton)

Suetsuna/Maeda started out really well going up 6-4 against #2 seeded Chinese team but now it's 8-12... Hope they can pull it out, although it's still group play so they can still advance if they lose.

BBC said:
The Olympic cauldron has been extinguished and relit after being moved into the position occupied by the opening ceremony bell in the stadium.

The flame was taken from the cauldron at 21:00 BST on Sunday and placed in a miner's lantern while the structure was relocated from the field of play.

It was relit at 07:50 BST on Monday, after the move to the south end of the stadium was complete.

The cauldron is made up of 204 steel pipes and copper petals.
