While competing in your home country gives you the support of all the public, at the same time you have so much pressure on your shoulder. I remember during Beijing 2008 lots of Chinese athletes were extremely tense, especially during the Diving, one of the girl who won at the end started crying.
I can't understand the pressure of performing for the country. Do it for the sake of being the best, not so others can live vicariously through your glory.

Wow Mexico did great, didn't know they were that good. I hope people watching enjoyed the competition, Diving is really spectacular and tense.

A few of them still appear to be women. Sadly, it seems like all of the top competitors appear to be ugly teenager males. I like watching guys lift... in the male event.
The first lot looked great, but some of these are a bit frightening. I wont say they're juicing, but I'd wager that some of them are closer to male genetically than others...

Another bronze for US? Man, I miss the days when we used to lead in golds. Now we always just lead in silvers and bronze.

Meh. I wonder if watching the Dutch hockey team will make me feel better about GB's disappointing diving.

Edit: it's the men, not women. meh.

Looking at the medal count only (ignoring population size, spending, events that give out too many medals, etc), how do they decide the winning country at the end?

Is it the country with the most golds that is #1 in the medal rankings?

That is the way I think it should be anyways. Most golds first, then use silver as a tie breaker, and finally bronze. A silver medal means you still lost.

Basically: 10 Gold, 0 Silver, 0 Bronze > 9 Gold, 9 Silver, 9 Bronze

Yes, the country with the most Gold medals "wins".

The host country wins.
