Looking at the medal count only (ignoring population size, spending, events that give out too many medals, etc), how do they decide the winning country at the end?

Is it the country with the most golds that is #1 in the medal rankings?

That is the way I think it should be anyways. Most golds first, then use silver as a tie breaker, and finally bronze. A silver medal means you still lost.

Basically: 10 Gold, 0 Silver, 0 Bronze > 9 Gold, 9 Silver, 9 Bronze

... there is no winning country

It's not a beauty contest...
All this hate for female weightlifters, I guess it's too be expected since some people think it's part beauty contest.
yeah, but this it is a WOMEN's competition. if you're shaped like a V, covered in acne + bacne, have rough skin like a man, are disturbingly vascular etc. you're probably taking some seriously hardcore shit.

To answer my own post, there is no official ranking method: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_medal_table

(But most of the world lists the countries by Gold as the deciding factor and not total medals)

Watching the table tennis, both matches I watch I hear huge support from another match (ie. mid point loud cheers) but it's not from the other match. So confused :(

Where's the hate? They're really, really impressive at the top level... but that doesn't stop them being scary. Same goes for the martial artists.

There's of course the concern about juicing, but what can you do... it's commonplace in weightlifting. People will always be suspicious, especially when they see the signs.

Or you just train day and night ridiculously hard like an Olympic weightlifter should.

The British gymnasts are being hyped up again. Dead-eyed/dispassionate gymnast: "I'm mentally prepared and focused on the upcoming Olympics" <-- DON'T SAY ANYTHING! JUST DO IT! God damn it...

How would having more medals be inferior to less medals?

These sorts of physiological changes and side effects do not occur without juicing. All of these women are on PEDs to some extent, but some obviously more than others. I just want to be able to temporarily suspend my disbelief and not have to imagine them injecting 24/7 and some of these women are making it extremely difficult to do that.

Wouldn't the officials be able to tell with drug testing?

Watching the womens weightlifting makes me sad. I'll never be as strong as these chicks despite weighing 30kg more. Makes me feel weak!

Not unless they randomly test throughout the training season. They know very well how to cycle the drugs out of their systems ready for competition.

In training they'd be breaking world records on a regular basis (I've actually seen this personally).

Maaaaaan. Must feel really bad to lose a gold medal be because you were disqualified. the Japanese deserved to win either way, she was the better player IMO.
edit: lol iPhone autocorrect failed me.

As an American, I LOVE the BBC, so jealous of you Brits! These explanations and animations on the moves for the individual gymnastics events are awesome and informative.

Attacking the leg from behind.

Yeah. It's a really dangerous move that puts the opponent in serious risk of getting injured. That's why it's a move punished so vehemently.

Yeah, the result was fair. The Japanese had the upper hand.

ROM got disqualified due to illegal throw. I wasn't sure why the previous point got taken away before golden score though (watching at work, so not paying super close attention).

It was actually a single penalty for a serious rule violation. It's called a hansoku make.

Uh oh, unibrow Russian better hope that Putin isn't watching him lose to Japan in men's final.

Oh kissyface Italian archer is on in the other stream. I'm torn!
