Eh I avoid the big pro sports myself from tennis to basketball to football. Those pro sports and their super rich athletes who only sorta care about the olympics never really fit the vibe of the games for me.

I agree with that, it's why I prefer people to say Phelps is the most decorated Olympian rather than greatest as it must be the event with the most scope for medals out of them all

Athletics have the most medal events followed by swimming. Frankly, I don't see what the problem is. There are different swimming specialties at different lengths. Same with athletics.

BBC iPlayer traditionally lasts a week after broadcast. That said, they'll often associate things into series and keep the entire series up until a week after the end of the series, which may well be the case for these olympics.

Thanks. Here is hoping. Would be nice if it was 2 week.

Ugh, not really.

There's 100m running.

But there's no 100m backwards running. 100m handstand running. 100m rolly-polly race. 200m running. 200m backwards running. 200m handstand running. 200m rolly-polly race. Etc etc

Which is basically what the swimming is. A few different ways to swim over different distances.

Basketball works because big national match stages are rare.

Football is so pointless, even with the age limit. It's not the highlight of anything. Get football out. No one wants to sit through this tournament really. I can't get myself to watch a whole match, even the final. Now that the women had a massively successful world championship there's no need for women's football either. OUT.

Gonna duck out of here lads before our tape-delayed friends take over and groundhog the fuck out of us.

Remember, women's archery starts at 9am sharp.

Catch you then. It's been emotional.

Instead, athletics has 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m, 42km, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, 20km walk, and 50km walk. For both men and women.

And then you have all the different field events like high jump, vaults, throws, etc.

Hurdles along with a thousand other field events.

Ya football should be out. Love football but I haven't even watched a match. The woman care though so I think they should just get rid of the male tournament and keep the woman.

I see where you're coming from, but running has hurdles, relays, varying distances, etc.

No one who does the walk participates in running events. No one who does the marathon runs any other distances. No one who does 1500m does 400. No one who does 800 does 100m. No one doing hurdles runs non-hurdle distances.

I don't think swimming has too many events, though, I enjoy them. I think diving is way overboard, but again - who cares? There's no prize for winning most gold medals. Only nerds care.

Yeah I agree with this. Not to mention it follows the Euro..

If football is good enough for Lionel Messi then it is good enough for everyone else.

Most of those are covered in the swimming too (don't forget open water). Then of course you get the backstroke / medley / breaststroke etc versions of them.

So? Swimmers usually only have 2 concentrations. Both sports still have many events.

number 10?

Is that cap from that Karate anime?

But this difference is that most of the swimming events are run by the same people for the most part. Running it is not that common for people to be competing in multiple distances. This has always happened with swimming, before Phelps there was Spitz. Carl Lewis is not the norm but we have Missy Franklin, Phelps, Lochte, Ian Thorpe, etc.

Just now there was a commercial saying watch Lochte in one of his strongest events. These swimmers can compete in all of them but they just have their preferences because there are so many similarities. Comparing swimming's huge amount of medals to track is just stupid.

The thing is you can put swimming in your sentences and you would come to the exact same conclusion. 800's don't do 100's etc etc
