So I made this post yesterday...

And Lawrence Somerset Clarke just come fourth in the 110m hurdles. According to wiki:

He just thanked the National Lottery for supporting him. Now this guy isn't even middle class, he's about as upper class as you can get. Now I'm not angry at him specifically/personally (or any other privileged athletes that receive National Lottery funding), but does anybody think that it's right that people like this should be receiving funding from the National Lottery? Because I sure as fuck don't.
If things really are the way you describe, then yeah, it really is fucked up. Really, really fucked up...

Equality works both ways you know.

Is he our best athlete in the 110m hurdles, proven through GB trials to qualify to run? Then yes he should get support. What are we supposed to do, only support poor athletes and force rich parents to pay for training? Get that reverse snobbery the fuck out of here

Rich people don't stay rich by spending money when they don't have to.

Hey rest of the world, are you even trying?

If they want to pursue sport as a career then I most certainly think it is right that they get lottery support so long as they are selected in the appropriate manner.

We'd still be on 1 gold medal without lottery funding for sports. It's a reason I play the lottery despite accepting it won't be me. Ever.

Ladies and Gentleman...It's that time again.

Time to see USA basketball team go ham and possibly start another international fight on the court.

lets goooo.

Umm.. YEAH?! You really don't think that people who are not as well off should get more support than those who are?

That's not "equality" that's one class having even more of an upper leg that they already had....

Why did that Javelin thrower step over the line on purpose after his shot landed? was he ashamed of it? don't understand that

It's not like that. He's just an idiot. The raison d'être of the national lottery was to support sports and arts. The situation in Britain where 50% of athletes in the team come from the independent sector is lamentable, but that is basically down to the poor state of sports teaching in the state sector and the lack of talent spotting. I wish it was better than that and everyone had a chance of competing in the Olympics, but the way we have it now works, Team GB are having their best ever games because of lottery funding changing the formula to please some idiotic political agenda would be a disaster.

The key is to improve sports in state schools, not to hobble funding for people that make it far enough to compete. I'm not sure how it can be achieved but I hope they can figure out a way, 220 playing fields sold since 1999 is surely not the way to go about things though. :/

This.

If the US can win their 2 favored team gold medal matches tomorrow, US should beat China out.

What is China favored to win Gold in, in the coming events?

I would say US is favored in these

Women and Men BBall
Women Soccer
Women volleyball
4x100 women
4x400 women
4x400 men
Gold and Silver Decathlon
and honestly if Powell is hurt for Jamaica, 4x100 men too. Regardless of Bolt and Blake being on the team. The US has the 3 next fastest men there.
