All this Canada talk got me thinking..
Do Canadians feel that Canada underperforms at the summer Olympics?

Damn, I had forgotten about how cool BMX is. Requires a lot of skill and is much more entertaining that Track, which is more about strength, pure speed and strategy.

I for one do, but I'm not a fan of a lot of the summer sports and tend to enjoy the winter Olympics much more. I enjoy watching most of the winter sports where as there are only a few summer sports that I can watch at length.

Not really. It actually lets the media focus on all of our medalists; each individual story. We're just happy to compete :lol

I am upset about our Men's Basketball team though. But things will soon change when Andrew Wiggins arrives.

To certain degree yes. If there was a 4th or 5th place medal we would be doing much better. ;) But it has more to do with lack of funding etc than anything imo. Like others said I think it makes us appreciate our athletes more however.

Same, I prefer most of the winter olympic sports. Summer not so much.

Four races, three crashes.

Plenty of crashes in the solo time trials yesterday, too. I don't know much about BMX and to my unassuming eye it doesn't look like a monster course, although the rhythm sections looks technically difficult. Obviously I was wrong. This is insane.

And LMAO at Helen Skelton. She looks terrified.

Awwwww.

I do. There's a lot thrown around about Canada not being a summer sports country. I wouldn't consider GB a summer sports country either and they are doing pretty damn good.

A lot of the summer sports at the Olympics can be practiced indoors as well. It's more about funding than anything else IMO.

Yes and No.

Our population is a lot smaller than say the USA or China, so we can't send as many athletes. Also, we're raised as a Winter-favoring country and prefer winter sports which we do just as well at (though we honestly only care if we win at Hockey in the Winter Olympics). We also, as far as I know, don't have a good invested amount of money put into our athletic program so we aren't able to breed as many summer Olympic-level athletes. I never expect Canada to win in an event like the 100M or anything like that though.

That being said, I'm generally happy we do as well as we do given the amount of people sent over.

Well we're certainly not a winter sports country!

We need to stop with the "We prefer Winter Sports" That is bullshit. Outside of hockey, the rest are all niche sports and it is sad if we consider ourselves a winter nation given our historical performance at winter games. For a "winter sports nation" we are very inconsistent in the skiing sports, figure skating, etc. Historically, we aren't even dominant in hockey. The fact is most people are playing "summer sports" if you take away hockey. We should be doing better.
