Oh man that guy and I share some facial features.

It's what I love about the sport. USA were heading out a few nights ago until a wrong penalty decision. How fate could have been so different. But there was always Hope

US women won water polo today too, not just soccer... so that's three golds for US womens sports teams (Water Polo, Soccer, Beach Volleyball), two to go. (Basketball and Indoor Volleyball, US women are in the final of the latter on Sat.) The mens' teams... basketball will be it. And they haven't gotten any lower medals either, while the women got a silver in beach volleyball too as well as the gold.

Nobody watches women's soccer in the US either, except in big competitions like the World Cup or Olympics. The interest you are seeing now is highly atypical.

You're right that women's soccer isn't incredibly successful, but it is true that even while the leagues have generally not lasted, there have been professional women's soccer leagues for at least 10-15 years now. There are still a couple of them, though they're not prominent (the best-known recent one shut down earlier this year). Other countries have taken much longer to set up womens' soccer leagues than the US. From what I've read, a lot of that is thanks to Title IX... other countries don't have something like it, and consider soccer a mens' sport, so they have taken much, much longer to start trying to have a decent womens' team. With the US that wasn't an issue, between Title IX and the fact that soccer was never that popular anyway so there isn't much of a cultural issue with it either.

Watching that final kind of makes me sad

I'm from Blackburn in the north west of England which is a real hotbed of football, my team is Blackburn Rovers, we've just been relegated from the premier league yet still have players on £35k a week and mo.

Recently after being relegated we held a 'funeral' where a mock coffin is laid to rest in the beer cellar of a pub to be brought out when we return (hopefully), at this event there was a man with a collections tin for the women's team. They aren't being paid and the money was to pay for them just to get to games and pay the referee.

Such bullshit that the club can't finance the girls and if it's widespread across the country shows we will never progress too far

The top level women's league folded here in 2012

Also, anything that gives football a little bit more exposure in the states is a win in my book.

One day, the US will end up dominating the world cup, believe.

I love how you guys are talking about Hope Solo and Alex Morgan, but not the chick who, you know, scored the two goals.

Hope Solo saved the game. Alex set up Carli for that header.

Didn't realize the womens final was tonight. Was this win without controversy, this time?
Japan deserved a penalty for a hand ball. Didn't look on purpose, but it still happened. USA were the better team in the end, but Japan were pretty good.

The women's water polo gold medal game that I mentioned above was on NBC, not the soccer game (which was on at the same time). Soccer was on cable on the NBC Sports Network, which had all of the soccer games. So yeah, they aired it, but not on the network.

Lets hope we're all permabanned by then because I dont think I could take anymore teary eyed eagle.jpgs flooding my screen everytime I check this thread

Just watched BBC's highlights of the match. Only Hope's first save was good. The second was simple and the third, the gif, was a poor save.

LOL at all the bitter tears in this thread. You can see that so many people were geared up to trash the USWNT if they lost the game, yet... yet they won.

Silly US-GAF flooding the thread for winning in a sport they don't even really care about and don't even name correctly !!
Love you :P
