Best Spice.

The range of things little old Britain has won medals in is so weird.

Shooting, Boxing, Poncing (Equestrian), Canoeing, Triathlon, Heptathlon, Long Jump, 10km, Taekwondo, cycling, rowing, tennis etc.

Mental. Much more diverse than we could have hoped for in our wildest dreams really.

wow. The guy gave the girl his horse to win the gold for GB, that's a pretty nice gesture.

Why do they have to sell the horses after the games?

Big ups to Team GB. It was looking shaky there for the first few days, but you came blazing back. Atlanta is a distant memory.

It's amazing what happens when you put a little effort (read: money) into your sports programs.

has more to do with being the host nation.

Great Britain shatters medal expectations

But what is the glut of success down to? And how has the world's 22nd most populated nation, and a perennial underachiever in sports, suddenly burst toward the forefront of the Olympic spotlight?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, money is a major part of its upturn in fortunes. In Atlanta in 1996, the Brits won just one gold medal, when legendary Olympic rower Sir Steven Redgrave won the fourth of his five consecutive Games titles.

A year earlier, however, Britain implemented the National Lottery funding program, an initiative that diverts proceeds from a state-run lottery game in areas such as sports, arts and the environment. In the 17 years since, it has plowed more than $6 billion into sports, from grass-roots level to elite-athlete funding. The fruits of that influx of support could not be seen in time for Atlanta, but the impact of the lottery money would soon be felt.

in 4 years i tell you i told you so, i cant wait.

Seriously. On what planet is that first save considered "poor"?

Also, thanks for clarifying that the first two are the same save, detective.

She should have caught it. The shot is around head hight, not too far from where she was standing.

She did not put enough power in the punch, to clear the ball from the danger area. If there was a Japanese player running in from deep - goal.

It looks impressive as her dive is exaggerated and theatrical. It's at its most exaggerated after she saves the shot. She did not need to dive that way.

Who thinks Brazil can get 20+ golds and 50+ medals in Rio?

Brazil's last two medal tallies:

2008
G: 3 S: 4 B: 8 Total: 15

2012
G: 2 S: 2 B: 7 Total: 11

The host get country gets something like a 40% bump in their medal tally so Brazil should be expecting

3.5 golds, 4.2 silvers, 10.5 bronze, or 18.2 medals.

Bolt is a legend but I kind of wish Blake won, I love his gimmick he should move over to WWE

Happy for USA or Jamaica to win the relay then either Blake or Gay takes a gold and I'm happy either way

Host nation doesn't always get a bump.

They will get a lot of medals regardless they will still be 3rd just like GB

I hope they get up the medal table but I don't feel that confident about 3rd or thereabouts, it would have to be a herculean effort to take a lot away from the the other consistent nations. Also maybe Australia will be back in form Rio. Maybe.

I can see Gay pulling up with an injury before they finish, seems to happen way too frequently these games. He worries me for the relay for some reason even though he is the best they have.

Haven't popped into the thread much today. Has Korey posted his obligatory medal count pic & taunt since the U.S. are up on on the medal counts? I do enjoy those.
