3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

got my screen protectors and I fucked it up badly. I didn't know what side was the sticky side and I figured where it was and tried to clean it with a cloth. DUST EVERYWHERE. I tried to cut the top one to fit the touch screen. I made it fit perfectly ..put it on and the touch screen didn't work when it was on. : |

9 bucks wasted. I'm going naked from now on.

That sucks. What brand were you using? I got my Hori screen protectors today and got them on both screens in about 5 minutes.

Can anybody find the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy demo on the eShop? I can't find it and was hoping to give it a try before I purchased it ...

How well does Nintendo's marketing and research department pay, anyway?

quite well actually

but if you think the average 3DS owner is anything more then a casual fan (mom buying for the kids) you need to wake up from your delusion

edit: I was at Target to today picking up NSMB2 and a mom was picking up 2 DSI XLs, and that's usually the scene I see at a 3DS/DS section of the store

My sister didn't buy a 3DS for her kids because she's used to the level of support she gets from Apple, where buying one e-copy allows you to share with others in the family. Neither she nor her kids mind that they don't have a 3DS because of this. Casual fans can also give a damn about idiotic business practices. Especially when they're accustomed to getting much better from other sources.

Your personal example doesn't refute his statement. The eye problem he is talking about may or may not have anything to do with yours.

It's more about your eye alignment. Someone who is cross-eyed, or close to it would find the 3D almost, if not, impossible to discern.

This isn't a near-sightedness/far-sightedness issue but instead it's an eyes melding two different images into a 3D image in your brain issue. Everyone inteprets 3D slightly differently since the image is formed in your brain. For some people the process just doesn't happen even if their eyesight is 100% fine.

The best example to think of is those 3D image puzzle books. Some people see the images right away while some people on the other side of the spectrum never see them.

Okay, my bad. The way he explained it in his post was kind of overarching and vague in that he said stereoscopic 3D "diagnosed your eyesight." I didn't think that was true in general, but if we're talking about specific elements regarding eyesight, then sure. Guess I just took the post too literally. I'm a copy editor, so I tend to do that. :P

Favorite feature of the 3DS XL - the locking 3D Slider.

I don't ever use 3D, so no there are no more accidental slider movement like with the original 3DS.

I also really am glad they moved the location of the stylus.

Darn... Is there any way to temporarily switch my 3DS region to try the demo?

I think you know the answer. I love my XL, but with Nintendo I unfortunately always expect the worst, and I'm usually proven right. Demos are not only limited in the number of times you can play them, but also region locked. Sigh.

My delusion is that one day people like you will back up their anecdotal nonsense with actual market research instead of "I saw X at a store so Y must be true".

Ya I bought the HORI ones too. I just made a mistake and it was game over.

To those putting the sound on stereo instead of surround sound....how does it sound with headphones? (at work now) I'd think the surround would be better

lol, welp. It has been a good thread while it lasted. The 3DS XL is finally out in America and now we are having "portable console warz".

if you want consistent matches (like finding people) it's just the nature of the beast.

makes charge characters WAY different and Guild god-tier.

Fortunately, the majority of people that play the top characters can't do combos, which makes it pretty easy to beat them

Lite mode with auto blocking enabled breaks the game. Lite Guile is beyond god-tier, lol.

Good job missing the point of my humorous post guys.

Bad job trying to cover it up. You made a stupid post- moving on.

So when you see the astronomical sale numbers of the DS you think the average buyer was hardcore gamer as opposed to a causal gamer? wow

Just took mine out to work for the day to give it the ol' walk around in the pocket test. Came back home with zero scratches/blemishes on the screen.

Thank you for finally fixing this, Nintendo.

You think the astronomical sales of iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches are only to the hardcore? Casuals expect more from devices and the e-stores they connect to. Especially children now.

what? how in the world did you jump to that?

It was intentionally silly, not stupid. There's a nuance there that I guess Sony Defense Force is unable to grasp.

Yes, that's exactly what people are who call you out on your trolling which you mask as "hey guys it's just a joke post LOLZ"

keeping digging yourself deeper in that hole there buddy

I think that certainly more than one in one-thousand (per your example) are 'hardcore' gamers. What that number is I'll never know (and really don't care as long as Nintendo is successful).

My money is just as good as anyone else's, is it not? What if I told you that I was a 'hardcore' gamer that has been sliding to more casual fare as I get older. Does that make my purchases any less valid?

Wow the build quality on this things is amazing. The 3D is also much easier to keep in focus. Unless you need the portability of the original this is the model to get.

could you steer what I originally said anymore off course?

The idea of system-transfers in 2012 is a joke and it hurts only the most loyal of fans, 99.9% of 3DS owners are not going to upgrade or buy another 3DS system unless their current one breaks down

I rather think 90% of Nintendo's problems in multiple areas is due to their reluctance to support infrastructure and have to deal with policing it. They shied away from an online service because of issues with children using it, dealing with tech support, billing, etc. This single motive filtered down through tons of different areas.

Yeah, they're going to put the account system on 3DS after Wii U launches. Perhaps it'll be set up to allow 'normal' system swapping where you simply de-authorize an old system and sign into the new one.

It's probably taken them this long to get it in place not just because they're lazy or stupid, as people are apt to wave off without thinking it through... more because they're too tight assed and worried about what will happen. I think the reason they haven't talked about Nintendo Network for Wii U is because they're still tweaking things, both in terms of the actual features, and in terms of presentation. Probably sweating over exactly how to frame it to minimize parents screaming that "formerly safe, Disney-like Nintendo, is selling our children toys that let pedophiles contact them through the internet".

what? how in the world did you jump to that?

You claim people blindly buy Nintendo products because they're casuals. Perhaps in the past. More and more people are educated about what is and isn't acceptable when it comes to handhelds, which is probably why the 3DS isn't setting the West on fire in regards to sales of the device or its games outside of Christmas.

Finally got a blue XL after calling 8+ gamestops in my area.

What's the consensus on cases for this thing? I leave it in my bag when i go to work and i don't want it getting all banged up. I was hoping I could find a cheap DSi XL case...

could you steer what I originally said anymore off course?

Considering you made the casual vs. hardcore comment yourself, I'd say you didn't need any help.

Could you actually back up your original statement? Here, I'll remind you:

Ken Masters said:
99.9% of 3DS owners are not going to upgrade or buy another 3DS system unless their current one breaks down

Still waiting for those stats to back this flippant statement up, champ.

I struggle to understand this concept. No sales = no games, no games = no sales? It just doesn't make sense.

I never claimed people blindly buy Nintendo products and I agree with you 100% the average consumer in 2012 is more and more intelligent on the product they bought then they ever were. All I said that the majority of DS owners would be considered "casual". I'm a hardcore gamer like everyone on here is, why are you taking offense to what I'm saying?

and obviously my 99.9% stat was an exaggeration, but I still stand by it being the majority

Never once equated games to sales in my post.

I'm not remotely offended. You made it sound like the typical consumer doesnt care about Nintendo's idiotic e-shop policies. My opinion is that they do, and I know many people that happily haven't bought any recent Nintendo handheld hardware because of it. Once my sister and her kids experienced the loss of all their downloaded software on their DSi when they moved to the XL, they were done with Nintendo. They're casuals. They know the minimum they should expect now, and Nintendo doesn't offer it. The bare minimum any company should offer is having all purchases associated with them instead of with their hardware.

Looks like I was taking your posts way too seriously and have also come across the wrong way myself, and I apologize.

I think I was taking more offense to the suggestion that 'hardcore' gamers were some shunted minority that Nintendo was continually discounting. Then again, you could point to any number of boneheaded moves N has made in the last seven years and use that as reasoning that they have abandoned 'real' gamers in search of the ever-growing casual dollar.

and obviously my 99.9% stat was an exaggeration, but I still stand by it being the majority

Fair enough. Truce?

I swear it was intended as a joke, however bad it may have been. It was not my intention to troll. The first sentence was just a setup for the punchline, but it was offensive and for that I apologize.

But I already dropped the "Sony Defense Force" bomb on you guys as a kneejerk reaction so I guess I am indeed going to stay in that hole. Oh well, at least I have my 3DS XL to pass the time until someone throws me a rope. Not that a Vita wouldn't be just as effective, I just... I'll shut up now.

Truce, my 99.9% exaggeration was extreme I admit

As far as cases go, I'm waiting for a nice hardcase to come out. Hopefully soon. There's been enough reports that carrying the XL in a pocket can cause scratches for me to worry. A good hardcase will prevent that and give me peace of mind until Nintendo can eradicate the screen-scratching issue for good on the 3DS line.

Bought My Blue 3DS XL in Full but have my launch 3ds to sell later. One of the Managers At Game Stop told me I have a week with receipt to get the $100 trade in value promotion since I wanted to do the System Transfer at home to which he fully understood. Made it more convenient to me.

I love the Bigger Screens and they don't seem to have a yellowish tint to it as well. I guess I got lucky. Feels way more comfortable as well. Can't even see myself going back to the original sized screens. I think the trouble of games looking blown up or blurry/pixelated will vary upon game but so far all of my games have looks amazing! It makes me want to buy more 3ds Software XD

Well I finally got a 3DS XL, and at the very last minute I changed my mind from blue to red. Transfer went OK, and the return to gamestop to get my $100 went smoothly too.

NES games on the XL look fantastic, it's like they were meant to be played on the XL. Nintendo please start selling SNES, and Genesis games!

Now, when are the 3rd party extended battery and grip things going to come out?

Nintendo is selling the 3DS XL Cradle on their own website for $19.
Thanks a lot. I purchased one. After spending a night without a cradle, I had to get one. I loved my 3DS cradle and like my Vita dock. Having these sort of cradles/docks for gaming platforms seems like a given these days.

Anyone know if this $19 cradle comes with an extra AC Adapter or not? I think the ones in Europe do... but in the US we already got a charger with the XL.

people this a really stupid question, but does the American XL really comes with the charger?, because the box looks so tiny. Thanks

It does. They cut back on excess packaging is really all. For instance the 3DS XL manual isnt the size of a textbook like the 3DS one.

I'm purchasing an XL and keeping my old one.

was posting this in the streetpass thread, hope to get a response over here:

i think ive encountered the streetpass glitch, possibly from overcharing my XL while i slept. i couldn't pass a friend last night (nor could he) but we both tagged a new system. said new system tagged me again 8 hours later, but i didn't tag it, so im thinking it's that glitch where only new tags work or something.

i read around online and was told to take the battery out, which i was trying with the kit i had for the nyko battery for OG 3DS, but the back panel's not yet coming loose. any ideas? i obviously dont want to format my system, nor lose another few system transfers back & forth to fix this.

*edit: turned on & off again, just received a notification that i tagged the new system 2 hours ago...okay, so i guess that's working, now to sort if old miis ive met can be tagged, id love for that to fix it but then again i got the new tag the first time before the old one got missed, no idea here

finally got some replies in the streetpass thread, i guess none of ya'll are having any issues or know about the glitch?

I would recommend it. I've been playing Theatrhythm religiously ever since it came out, and it can be murder on your touch screen, especially once you start playing Ultimate Scores.

see i had one on the bottom screen of my last unit, and Theaterhythm does indeed make it take a beating but i kinda felt it lost some responsiveness, even when properly applied. not sure if ill do it again this time.

i hate that one cannot discuss a "rival" console in a thread without all kinds of fanboy sniping. are we not gamers? do we not enjoy all gaming consoles?

yeah but cmon, this shit read like a hyuga post:

Although free, I appreciate the handheld however I appreciate SONY more for offering something at 250 compared to 200 for Nintendo 3DS XL. Nintendo was asking 250 US for this technology? are they out of their fucking mind?

BOTTOM LINE: I would have NEVER spent a dime to buy this handheld considering that I have a Vita.

Sorry I am comparing generally and I do not want to offend anyone here or make up nonsense about gaming library. My intent is to compare something Nintendo is asking 200 and what SONY is offering at 250.

also: new systems get priority, gravijers

got a red one. Never fucking trust plants to move your data. Taking forever to copy licenses!

those little guys do thankless work man

How long did it take to update the XL for most people? I'm sitting in a coffee shop next to my GameStop so I can not return for a while after transferring my data.
