He was fired because management could not trust him any more, they wanted better/higher scores for games that where coming up and coming up as marketing on the site.
Jeff just did his job as EiC, and the Kane and Lynch was just around that time.
Jeff was fired before the review even was live.

Ok so he was fired because he generally didn't score games high enough/let reviews with low rating pass.

The overall idea of someone being fired because the management didn't like what scores he gave still seems to apply though.

No he was fired after the review went up, it was pulled and then resubmitted where somebody had made changes to said review.

As for Press Restart ads situation, Vox Media probably set the ad fee as well as how the ads/ promotion was going to be displayed and probably sold the ad setup to various companies and Microsoft was the one who bit.

It is known that for many gaming publications that the editorial staff doesn't know what the adverts will be on the site until they run and probably the same in this case as the Press Restart was created by Vox Media and not Polygon.

Verge is pretty solid. Polygon not so much.

The most recent Polygon screw-up was when their "news writer" "covered" the MGS movie announce from the perspective of someone at the press conference.

Only Polygon didn't pay to send anyone. The "writer" simply copied from another reporter's twitter feed, didn't bother to fact check random assumptions and confirmed the wrong studio as backing the film.

I understand the desire to be "first," but being accurate is more important. If Polygon isn't going to bother with accuracy in reporting and is going to rely on random Twitter comments for "confirmed news" its rep is going to drop like a rock.

They supposedly have all this funding. Where are the boots on the ground doing the first hand reporting?

Though almost the entire industry is guilty of acting like covering E3 is like being in front lines of afghanistan. Heaven forbid these guys have three days of work that make them feel tired.
 
Deep down, even though I revile Arthur Gies, I thought his Twitter feed was just a gross exaggeration of him. This video actually makes him seem even more insufferable than his online persona.
 
these polygon guys dont take criticism very well it seems. it seems they are baffled about how people could think god's gift to games journalism can be seen in a bad light.

also jeff green is awesome
 
When Neogaf gives you a hard time it's probably easy for them to just ignore and file it as a overreaction, but when friends and former coworkers continue to call you out, I would hope it would inspire a little self reflection and a little less defensiveness.

I'm probably biased because I'm a big fan of Jeff Green and not so much the Polygon guys, but they're coming off as extremely defensive and whiny on Twitter.
 
For those that don't know him, Jeff Green is easily classified as one of the "nicest guys in the industry w/a little dash of old fart mixed in for good measure."

He's certainly not one to speak ill of anyone else, so it's kind of odd to see anyone from Polygon get offended by his gentle ribbing.

He wasn't even being mean, just tossing out a wee bit of sarcasm to temper the "WEBSITE FROM GOD" attitude being thrown around in the doc.

That and it made for an excellent laugh. :)

Which episode are they going to cover how they report news by using other people's twitter feed?

They all seem cocky and arrogant. Why would anyone want to read content from a person with a chip on their shoulder who won't take criticism well?

As for that KH review and the comments....lol on both sides. Her explanation each time starts with "The thing is..."
 
Haven't watched any of the Polygon doc stuff except the first one. The tone is way off and all, however, reviewing games and covering games should be taken a bit more seriously.

We have companies dropping tens of millions on products with a lot of mechanics and moving parts in them and usually reviews gloss over much of what the product contains. Sure, you can review based on surface qualities but games would be better off with a deeper dive. I'm not sure that is going to be Polygons approach.

I quit making yet another site dedicated to normal news and am now focusing on a parody site because why not.
 
I would have thought Chris Grant would have told everyone to simmer down on twitter arrogance until they actually have a site going. They can't go back and change the documentary but they can at least admit that they're still humans.
