Halo 4: Review Thread

Question: Reviewers are supposed to point out the flaws in games when not giving a full 10/10 score, yeah?

I heard one fifth of a points worth of disapproval in the IGN vid. What else did the reviewers find wrong with the game?

IGN and Gamestop both point out the missions last minutes only and lack replayability. The complete opposite of Firefight, imo.
Ah I see. I guess it's the story driven mission structure of SpartaanOps vs endless hold the ground structure of Firefight.

I'm afraid if you're looking for the latter than you probably will be a little disappointed. On the bright side, at least you'll be getting something fresh every week. Most of my friends only liked 3 maps in Reach's firefight and that made the mode boring after a couple of weeks.

Congratulations to everyone at 343i and MS for taking such big risk and delivering an amazing result.

I cannot imagine how great you guys must feel right now. Your efforts paid off. I hope you are all celebrating! I know most of us will be this Tuesday.

This. I'm more excited about Spartan Ops than I ever was about Firefight ( which was fun for a while, but grew rather stale in the long run ).

The single player campaign is 9-16 hours long and the difficulty has been upped. Supposedly the story is more emotional than past Halo games and the sound is amazing.
That sounds promising, thanks! I was already preferring H4's art direction so if the sounds better (though I always enjoyed the series' OST, assuming that's what you mean) and the campaign's far more involved than I'll definitely look into getting this... I really only got Halo 3 since it seemed borderline expected of every 360 owner at the time (got my console around the time it came out so

So any word on framerate, glitches, etc? Haven't really read these yet, Im watching the Machinima stream.
You're not hearing anything about frame rate because there are no frame rate issues. Trust me dude. I did notice the glitches you were talking about with the sound, but honestly, I never once encountered that in the campaign, or any other glitches. I think the sound glitches may be a result of some networking bug. Thats why you're noticing them in online multiplayer and co-op spartan ops videos.

I cant argue with that since I only played Firefight for a couple weeks before moving on too. Microsoft probably has metrics of how long people played it on average, and thus decided to go this route instead. It will definitely keep me from selling/trading in the game. And also keep me tuning in each week.

OK so who's gonna be the attention whore troll who wants to give it a 6/10 for page views?

Tom Chick just raised his hand.

Here's a little bit of inside-baseball for you guys, re: those slightly-silly descriptors screen capped from the IGN video review - the way our templates work for video reviews right now limit us to very few characters in those pro/con slots.

So we could say things like "Great sound" or "Great Graphics." Something as simple as "Impressive Visuals" probably doesn't fit. And YES, I know he had enough room for "Ear-gasmic."

I'm just saying, there's something like 16 characters to work with, and you want to make an impact, communicate your point, and avoid being redundant. So you end up with things like "killer" multiplayer, at the end of the video review.

The written review doesn't have these limitations, so you'll see more fully-formed pros/cons: http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/01/halo-4-review

+Astounding aesthetic, AI, presentation
+Unbeatable sound design
+Impeccably paced campaign
+Endless, balanced multiplayer
+Still-unmatched social multiplayer options

Killer comment

I personally beleieve that MS mis-marketed spartan ops and its not lybertyboys fault

i was expecting something it isnt and at first was disappointed. HOWEVER, once i got past that, it was awesome

:)

MS pushed it as a total single player campaign in a way like story etc and yes it has story but not in the way MS had pushed it.

It's really worth playing though so do it.

I need to look up how big games are judged, as there isn't a -. If everything is unbeatable and better than ever, how is the game not a full 10?
I'm not saying IGN is wrong, I just want to know cuzz i've always wondered that for bigger games reviewed by them

Good to see Eurogamer is continuing the tradition of nonsense please-go-to-our-site reviews.
Don't do that dude. While even I think the review reads like a higher score than it's given, at the end of the day 8/10 is a good score. And if you read the review, it makes the game sound amazing, so don't worry about the score. Let the trolls worry about the score. Halo fans will be pleased by actually reading the content.

Ear-gasmic even.

But I kid. When did it become wrong to be excited about something? Must all reviewers be robots?

I didn't mean that as a critique on him, I just was saying, he sounded excited. "For more on Halo 4, and oh boy is there more" lol

No GameTrailers review?

Gamekult say the game lack innovations, it adds QTE (...) but relies on an old game design that feels even older in 2012. They say the campaign is too short. But the game shines in lots of other areas. 7 on Gamekult is a 8-10 on other sites.

I'm glad to hear stuff like this is sparse but the inclusion at all is ugh.

The escapist review seem really unimpressed with the story and the campaign in general. Mostly in that it didn't feel like halo sometimes, it looked a little too "realistic" and the music was not Marty. I feel this is what 343 will have to deal with going forward. Change to much, it's not Halo. Change to little, Oh, it's just another Halo.

Let's not do this again, the Uncharted review thread was utterly embarrassing when it came to the Eurogamer score. (which was about right for the game anyway)

I'd like to know how anyone can deem the multiplayer "balanced" before the game has even been released to a wide audience. Tuned, maybe, but balanced? That remains to be seen, especially with a brand new developer; albeit there is still some old staff on there.

Read the text. Negatives mentioned in the review include unmemorable music and some fetch-questy/overlong missions.

Anyone have a good safe review for me to read with no spoilers. I have kept myself pure until now.
Honestly, if you want a pure experience. Just avoid all reviews. Seriously. Even talking about the opening scene will diminish the impact of actually watching it for the first time. There are a lot of little spoilers in every review that you would be better off just playing the game first and then reading the reviews later.

And if you're really antsy then just go read the by-line at meta critic. The blurb from each site should get you hyped enough.

So basically it kicks ass. That's all I needed to know.

Seriously though, I'm extremely pleased to hear that the campaign doesn't have the usual midway slump like all the other Halo games (except for ODST, which is consistently good). A slightly reduced overall length is not an issue if every mission is enjoyable to replay.

The hype dirigible is advancing at full power.

The campaign is longer than Halo 3 and a lot longer than a COD campaign
