And nowadays, they have Fox . . . and they like Fox because it kinda tells them what they want to hear. But since it is news on TV . . . they believe it. All of it.


Today, younger people are much more jaded and expect to have shit thrown at them all the time. So they are a bit more skeptical & cynical.

My dad used to be normal, but after a steady diet of the WSJ editorial page and Rush Limbaugh we don't talk about politics any more. :(

Democrats seem set to maintain a majority of the Senate. It also looks like they might make some gains in the House but not enough to take the majority away from the Republicans, so you'll likely have a split Congress again.
 
I've been kind of out of the loop for the awhile, could someone kindly tell me what's going on in Florida that's making voting so difficult?

My Dad was always conservative, but it got worse under Obama. My grandfather became intolerable starting around fall 2008.
 
Whichever way this election turns out, it'll be amazing. Fun times to be had drinking tears if Obama wins, but if Romney wins it'll be amazing in the shit-just-got-real thing. Shit'll be so fucked that it's going to turn into one of those just-sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride insanity parades.

Same with my Dad. Even me gently ridiculing him about casting his vote in support of the "the Earth is 6,000 years old!" party's candidates didn't work, which is sad, as he's always been quite a science and sci-fi geek. Sad.

As far as the presidential candidates go, he's basically the best the GOP has at the moment, and they're pretty damn desperate to get Obama out of office. That's more what it comes down to, it's not so much getting Romney in as it is getting Obama out.

The non-Americans who responded in that way are either joking or incredibly ignorant, though I'm sure you know that. That's a pretty insulting thing to say considering it's likely that only a very tiny percentage of people are that racist.

As for why Romney is a "viable" candidate, well I think it's just part of the two party culture. I think most people who identify as a democrat or a republican will not likely switch sides even if they disagree with most of what their own candidate is running on. They tend to latch onto one issue in that situation. This is especially true with older people... My grandmother for example has always voted republican, and despite my family's attempts to show her how big of a scumbag Romney is, she ignores everything except the fact that Obama wasn't able to help the economy recover as fast as he promised. There's literally nothing we can say that will change her mind, despite all the facts about how the economy got to where it was, how Romney's policies would impact her and the rest of our family when it comes to student loans and Medicare, etc. She likes Obama as a person, and thinks he's an amazing speaker, but the simple fact that she identifies as a republican keeps her from voting in her own best interests. I guess part of her wants to believe that Romney can somehow do better.

Then there are the republicans who are simply brainwashed by Fox news and the likes. They don't realize that nearly everything they're being spoon-fed by these crooks is flat-out untrue. There are unfortunately a LOT of people like this.

He's not an idiot. He's just a rich dude who would do anything and say anything to be president.

I'm not going to get into a full-on explication of Republican demographics, but Romney voters are combination of people who think (1) free market economics are better for the growth of the economy as the government creates needless bureaucracy; (2) an aggressive foreign policy keeps the US safe; and (3) various regressive social policies because Jesus.

I know plenty of people who believe (1) and are voting for Romney, yet are still decent intelligent people. They tend to be more affluent. Their faith in free market economics tends to reflect the fact that they or, in some cases, their parents have done well in the system.

I have never met someone who believes (3) who I would want to spend time with.

House will stay Republican barring a massive landslide, Senate should stay Democratic (which is a victory), though keeping it in 2014 will be really difficult (I think 23 of the 33 seats up are Dem seats).

I don't necessarily disagree, and some simplifying was necessary on my part to bring it to basics. I agree that a lot of wealthier people believe "Why should my money be taken to support others?"

On the other hand, I think the human mind is a powerful thing. "Why should my money be taken to support others?" quickly magnifies into the larger issue of Economic Freedom versus Economic Fairness. And the person touting Economic Freedom can easily convince themselves that this is ultimately what's best for the greater good.

But in order to not demonize those who argue for Freedom over Fairness, I would say that while I'm voting for Obama and believe in some redistribution of wealth, I might also balk at the idea of taking larger chunks of our budget for foreign aid to build houses for the poor in Libya. While that might be a noble cause, ultimately, I'd rather not spend my taxes on that. And that's the same argument that those affluent Republicans could make, except they make it about Americans.
