And practically no games will use 11.1, then. At least not in a meaningful way that's worth it for 99% of gamers.
What happens if MS kills PC gaming and the next Xbox isn't successful?
I was at a MS event last week and basically while absolutely nothing is official the general feeling floating around is they may try to only include the desktop on the pro edition of the next Windows. This will ensure corporations will say absolutely nothing while still locking up the non-biz marketplace. Non-biz users will be pushed towards office 365, which only requires a browser to run, or even an app version of it.
Next step, DirectX 12 exclusive to metro apps.
Could someone please summarize what developers (like notch and Gabe) have against win 8.
I use Steam with no qualms on win 8. No different than I was using it on 7.
I install and use software outside of metro just fine.
Metro is not forced on me, is just there.
Do we have to start laying out cases were Microsoft obfuscated or outright denied access to APIs for competing programs in order for you guys to get what people are getting worked up about? How are you supposed to judge something but ignore previous behavior?
People complaining about this (including me) feel this is a very possible future development:
a) Win 8 comes. Metro and Desktop apps are separate but equal.
b) Win 8 SP 1 comes out. "Due to new security protocolls only certified programs will have full access to features A through D of the OS." Desktop developers have to figure out workarounds or put their applications on the Windows Store.
c) The next DirectX comes out. "Hey we did some low level stuff for performance and power consumption that are only reachable for certified programs." Desktop developers lose feature parity with Metro developers.
Now, will this definitely happen? No. Does the Store put Microsoft in a position to make this happen on such a scale for the first time ever? Yes. Have they behaved in such a way before? Yes. Are we supposed to take their good faith on default? According to some you're Stallman if you don't.

Hopefully it'll be easily hacked into Win7.
This sort of shit should be illegal.
Ever heard of Monopoly laws? Why? DirectX and Windows are Microsoft's property, they can do whatever they want with them. The reaction the gaming community is having over Windows 8 is ridiculous, just goes to show some people can't adapt to something simple like a UI change.
Ever heard of Monopoly laws?
Internet Explorer is also their property and it didnt' stop them from getting sued over and over again.
Still using XP, MS are fucking idiots.

I think W9 will be a more traditional OS release with DX12 and everyone is going to try to forget W8 ever existed.
So they're going to be sued by... themselves?
Also, it's hilarious that people still hate Windows 8 when a simple little program called Start8 makes Windows 8 just like Windows 7, but better and with more features.
Have you actually tried Windows 8? It's essentially a better version of Windows 7 with a tiled start menu and a built-in smartphone-like store. Most of the whining is from people that don't have it installed, cos if they did, they'd be wondering what the fuss is all about - every piece of software that I used on Windows 7 works fine on Windows 8. There's even easy ways to bring the Start menu back if you really want it.As for Windows 8, I bet it bombs, we got an excellent release on 7, followed by something that is trying to push a new UI.

They want to turn it into a closed device with an IOS like store so they can get a cut on every sale.
The idea is Metro will be forced on us in the future as far as gaming is concerned, all this is just leading up to it.
Except when it's crashing all over the place in games.
what if the xbox3 will support 11.1? Than every multi game will support it on the PC.
I have stated, as an user of win 8, I can install software outside of metro. Download .exe and install. Completely outside of metro and their store front.
Is there a statement from microsoft saying that they will disable installing software that way.
Until that happens this is some tinfoil NRA "they are going to take our guns" kind of crazyness.
Mind you, I'm not saying that everyone should like Win 8. But the idea that Metro is being forced as a way to install and distribute software on win 8 is Factually false.

... what?
Because that worked really fucking well for DX10 Vista.

It's not against win8 as it is, but what it foreshadows: sure, the desktop is there, but the very architecture of the thing has opened the door for it not being there in win9 if Metro takes off. It's not just a worst-case supposition, every Microsoft dev event is geared towards that direction. They're pushing Office and even the dev tools towards the cloud, the business products like SharePoint are turning towards more app-like models, XNA is unofficially considered dead for game prototyping because it can't run on Metro, they've tried to make the newer Visual Studio Express only able to compile Metro apps (and only went back because devs complained) and so on.Could someone please summarize what developers (like notch and Gabe) have against win 8.

Right now, DirectX 11.1 is simply a post in the ground. That post may just be to put up a shiny new bird feeder in the yard, or it may be the first in a series of posts that eventually form a fence...
What you don't seem to understand is that it's just another step in that direction... The time to throw a fit about this stuff is NOW before any possible implementation... not after microsoft has put up the fence.

No one is saying that, why are you missreading what people are saying? What they have been doing however, points in every way that eventually it will be the only way to install software on a windows PC.

Please lay down the path in which this is going to happen.
1. Make DX11.1 exclusive to win 8.
2. ?????
3. ?????
4. Metro storefront is required to install all software to win 8.
Even Apple with their app store doesn't require developers to use their storefront to install software in OSX. That is, if something changed since i sold my macbook. I will admit to be wrong if this is the issue. But AFAIK you can just download the DMG, unpack and runs application on Mac OSX.
There's no precedent for this.
Of all the things that people complain about Win 8, justified or not, why do they hinge on this?
They think that because Metro apps can only be installed through the Windows Store, that ALL apps will have to be installed that way in every version of Windows, perhaps as soon as Windows 9. In other words, they have so much tin-foil wrapped around their craniums, that they can't think straight. Windows 8 is as open as Windows 7 was. The Windows Store is additional to what existed in Windows 7. It doesn't replace desktop software - if it did, I wouldn't be using it and I'd be on the "fuck this shit!" train too.Of all the things that people complain about Win 8, justified or not, why do they hinge on this?
