- Cant turn off the screen on the controller AND at the same time select for the Wii U to shut itself off when a download completes.

- The disc drive spins always if there's a disc in the drive. Always.

- A 1.6 gig game (Mario) took 2 hours to download, and then took 20 (!) minutes to install.

This is a biggie too. Downloading then installing.

I'd also like to echo the comments of everyone who has been dismayed by the sluggish performance of the OS. Waiting 10-15 seconds between screens is not acceptable in 2012.

I give Sony shit for this, but Nintendo took it to new levels. I wasn't even installing it to an external drive. It was using the built in memory.

I'll never buy third party multi-plats for this. The experience of just using the console sucks, but when you play Mario you realize why you continue to buy Nintendo hardware. It's just goooooood. It's not earth-shattering good, but it's Mario in HD finally and it plays great. Why I cant use the Pro controller I'll never understand, though.

Hey people!! I have a preordered deluxe version waiting for me at Best Buy. I'm finishing my algorithm project due on tuesday but now I dont know what to do!!!

Hearing all this issues with the OS being slow, Updating the console being slow, every game needing an update and poor performance of third party ports is killing me.

I have been a Nintendo fan since 1989 since I got my NES. Can't live without Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart etc but WTF is going in on with Nintendo botching this launch so bad?

Fuck!

- 1GB day one firmware update via slow servers.
- Individual updates for every single game so they can access Miiverse.
- Slow, laggy operating system menus.
- Almost if not every 360/PS3 port has inferior visuals and/or performance to their current gen counterparts.
- GamePad and pro controllers unusable for character control in NSMBU multiplayer.
- Crashes/freezes.
- User accidentally accesses debug version of main menu.
- Another user accidentally access admin control of Miiverse, reading messages from one of the Miiverse creators/programmers.
- Nintendo IDs tied to systems, no option to transfer yet.
- Audio/video tied to HDMI or component, no option for one on either.
- TV remote control does not work with receivers. Therefore if you wish to use surround sound via HDMI, you have no TV GamePad control.

Most unbelievably mangled console launch in history.

and Nintendo fans will not give a damn about any of this and still make this system a huge success.

As my first exposure to the Wii U I played a demo unit at Best Buy today. I haven't followed any Wii U threads, I haven't read anything about the Wii U, I haven't seen any commercials about it. My son who is 12 hasn't begged me for it like all other game systems. I also have no idea what the release schedule looks like. Had I not walked into Best Buy to check out the laptop I'm ordering my wife for xmas I would have no idea that this thing is for sale.

Thank's to this OP I now know much more than Nintendo ever told me. How could Nintendo fail this hard on marketing their leap into the current GEN? Who did they advertise to?

The 299.99 and 349.99 price points appear fair for what you get. The demo I played was Rayman. I liked how the gamepad was integrated at certain points in the game. I didn't like how big and awkward it was to hold at the demo unit. The game and system also looked beautiful.

I want to like this thing but I have to convince my 12 year old that he likes it too. That way we have majority rule over my Wife. It's funny how life wraps around on itself I remember my dad convincing me that a Commodore 64 was the best thing ever and we pulled the same trick on my mom.

Downloading as soon as you start game and have to install

However... you do have the option of launching the software and have it download in background

but most people don;t know that or just wait

I'm still going to pick up my launch system at the end of the month, like a fucking sucker :(.

Lame! Hopefully some of these problems can be fixed before the EU launch.

Oh, Nintendo...

After having it easy for the last 6 years, suddenly you have to put up with the same headaches as sony and MS :p long past time.

Frankly none of the criticism phases me. I bought my Wii U to play exclusives and I'm sure those will please (in fact, Nintendoland, ZombiU and NSMBU aleady have on my end.) Nintendo still doesn't "get it" but it won't stop me from playing great games where and when I can.

How do you get the picture to your gamepad screen exclusively on certain games? I thought it was supported in Assassins Creed 3, but I can't seem to figure it out.

It's in the game settings under general... at least that is what the peeps on Miiverse AC3 community are saying. Have I mentioned that I really like Miiverse? Really helpful.

It's odd... I've seen lots of commercials on channels like Cartoon Network... but it seems they are pretty localized to certain channels. Nintendo didn't do a big media blitz this time...

When I went to pickup my preorder today from gamestop there was one person in line who was absolutely flaberghasted at the line and asked what we were all in line for... so at least a fairly regular gamer walked in today not knowing it was a launch day for a console, not ever a great sign marketing wise.

You can wait I guess, but I expect Nintendo to address most of the problems in this thread fairly soon. Can you put up with some buggy software in the mean time?

Damn, what the fuck is going on with Nintendo? They seriously allowed all this shit to pass with their new console? What about that damn Nintendo seal of quality?

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo wasn't ready to launch this system yet, but had little choice in the matter with their last couple fiscal quarters being bad and not being able to stomach another one.

Well my son certainly watches the cartoon network. I would have expected to hear about it from him like I do all other game systems and trust me I mean ALL gaming devices. How did the Big N fail to attract what I assume is their core audience for this. My little dude is a gamer to the core.

My question is why didn't they do a big media blitz? Are they arrogant enough to think that just because it's on the shelf come holidays people will absolutely buy it? I guess they may have the right to after the monumental success of the Wii, huh?

This last one really irritates me. Nintendo is constantly living in the past, do they assume everyone is still piping sound directly through their TV?

I guess I am fortunate that my TV has an audio out for my surround sound system, is this not a common thing in TVs?

Having a great time with the gf playing NSMB and nintendoland. Trying zombie u next.

Btw not being able to use the gamepad in NSMB multiplayer is mindboggling.

Anyone get ScribbleNauts Unlimited? I picked it up but am worried that I should return it. Is it worth the price tag? Can someone post their impressions? More detailed the better. Thanks.

Well not being able to seperate hdmi video and component audio has made me use tge component cable for video. At 720p is there a difference between component and hdmi?

Have people had any luck just showing up to stores and nabbing systems without a preorder?

Seems to depend on the location. In my city in central florida, good luck. I literally saw someone in the front of line turned away. Other people were reporting 10+ consoles just sitting on shelves waiting for someone to hear of them.

Canadian crowe: Yes, HDMI is a lot cleaner than component, even at 720p. Component cables tend to pick up a little noise and thus the image becomes softer (slightly blurrier)

Interesting. I'm at the point where if I happened to walk into a store and see a Wii U over the next few weeks I'd probably grab it and ZombieU, but I can totally live without it for the time being. This is the first time I haven't bought a new console day 1 for quite awhile...

For launch it doesn't surprise me. The fans will show up, and it will probably sell out. Why advertise that to the "casuals"? This may be a bad comparison, but Apple doesn't advertise the new iPad until after it released.

I think the real question is now that it's out will Nintendo start it's marketing blitz. Will it show up on Ellen? Will I see ads during Modern Family? If not, then I'll start to wonder...

I did this morning at Toys R US.

Showed up 15 - 20 minutes after they opened, completely missed the initially line. I just walked to the videogame department bought my deluxe Wii U and walked out the store. One of my fastest and easiest purchases ever. They only had 2 deluxe systems left after I bought mine.

The thing about all the points you cited is that only the issue with account binding and the poor quality of the bigger 3rd party launch ports are the really serious issues.

How many people having a shit at Nintendo's expense are those using the system right now, and, crashes aside, hating the experience? Most of the people I've talked to (including through Miiverse - imagine that) don't give a shit about the laundry list of everything supposedly critically fatal.

Frankly, I've been enjoying it all day. Am I an idiot with low standards? I dunno. I built a good gaming PC and keep Windows clean because I like nice things. Slow primary app switching aside so far, I am finding the system a lot of fun to just plain use. Miiverse is great. The gamepad is a lot of fun. Everyone bitching about the "low" resolution, whatever - the actual quality of the screen looks great to me.

Came back on GAF after all day, and find that apparently this is the worst game console of all time, Nintendo has proven they don't deserve to be in the industry, etc. Bullshit. Don't buy into the launch day panic, backlash, "now is our chance to eviscerate Nintendo" shit that's bound to be flying around.

Account issues are a problem for the future, not hurting anyone this moment - but it has to be taken care of. Priority item #1.

Aside from that, some further OS nips and tucks, related to expanding the chat application and app loading.

Not even going to get into this stuff about networks stability - it's ridiculous to castigate Nintendo this fast when everyone's network has shit the bed during epic launches, holidays, and because, well, going down for months due to hacking.
Anyone got any impressions on how Wii games look on the Wii U? Any improvement at all?

Short of it: Native Wii U games I've played - NSMB U, NintendoLand, Nano Assault Neo - look extremely crisp, 720p or not. Really good lighting and shadows, great textures. Great IQ. 3rd party launch ports vary; Sonic Racing Transformed has parity with the other consoles except more stable / locked framerate, maybe a bit better lighting. Some of the other bigger 3rd party games have performance issues.

I guess I am fortunate that my TV has an audio out for my surround sound system, is this not a common thing in TVs.

If you are referring to your TVs optical out: You won't be able to pipe surround through that using the Wii U (at least with most games, there's a minority that support Dolby Digital). 2 channel PCM is the maximum you'll get, as Nintendo hasn't licensed Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS for the system.

Well not being able to seperate hdmi video and component audio has made me use tge component cable for video. At 720p is there a difference between component and hdmi?

I've just about accepted the lack of an optical out (headphone user here), but no stereo via Cinch in conjunction with HDMI is absolutely horrible and unacceptable. I'd like to pipe the audio directly to a headphone amp as most receivers have terrible headphone ports.

Is anybody else having an issue where the image on the screen is too wide? I've checked all the aspect ratios for my TV and receiver and they are all set to "Normal". But, the left and right sides of the screen seem a bit cut off.
I'm having the same issue, man. I've got it connected via a Wii component cable and set to 720p. From what I've found online, we're not alone as far as the issue, but there's no workable solution either. :-/
