Only option I see in there is the ability to link Wiimotes and to turn off the screen.
That's odd. I have an option to turn off the rumble of my gamepad in the controller settings.

Also, has any solution been found for screen size yet? Probably not. Nintendo better make that a priority in the next (hopefully extremely soon) update.

I haven't had any real problems with anything on the OS yet, aside from low load times, random internet disconnection, and Miiverse hiccups. I think it's pretty good overall actually, but they really need to iron out speed and connection.
and screen size ffs

NSMBU is absolutely fantastic. I'm in love with it! :p

So far I've been having a blast with my wii u. I guess I should be hating it more and complaing but I haven't been this happy to own a new game system in years. System feels like a whole box of fun full of all kinds of quirky Nintendo goodies. Miiverse is a blast. I love drawing so I plan to spend a lot of time doing late night doodles. And new super Mario is great fun. Also realized my wii games look and sound a bit better on wii u.

So far so good! Consider me one happy customer.

Cool, I now have two $387 charges on my bank account and zero tracking numbers from Gamestop (I ordered one Wii U on September 13th, and they've fucked up my order something fierce).

How've the connections in Miiverse and its various integrated functions been for you? Not too many errors and drops?

Does anyone else get kicked out of apps (without warning or anything) when they press the Home button? Specifically while in the eShop, Miiverse?

The update took a bit to download, but it never disconnected on me. Got everything to set up and so far things have been smooth. I noticed the loading is a tad long, but that's it. Shame youtube isn't up. Haven't tried the games yet.

Just, ugh.
That makes no sense.
And I won't be able to correct that on my setup.

Blame TV manufacturers for their terrible products that still implement overscan cropping when it doesn't have any reason to still exist on digital inputs. We are not receiving our console's pictures via antenna

I'm very certain that Nintendo will patch the safe area issue in a future update.

I keep seeing this.

Is the Wii U really not doing 1:1 pixel mapping here?

Many TVs arbitrarily crop 5% of each side of displayed pictures, which degrades image quality due to the additional interpolation needed (picture is "blown up") as well as creates a loss of a pretty significant amount of display area.

1:1 pixel mapping has nothing to do with how a console generates an image. It typically signifies (in marketing speak) a TV that is capable of displaying an image as it is received via HDMI (from the Wii U) - which is how it should be, but sadly isn't in many instances. Console manufacuters therefore have to account for the fact that most TVs are horrible, terrible products. Nintendo evidently didn't. ;)

I think that happens for all the OS apps - browser, friend list, etc. Switching to the home button menu and back takes quite a while because of that.

I'm picking up my preordered WiiU tomorrow (didn't get home in time today), and I've got a question about the Wii data transfer:

I've got nearly all my Virtual Console and WiiWare games saved to an SD card. 1) Can I use this SD card to do the transfer? 2) Will the games on the SD card transfer over?

Thanks!

Okay now where's the list of positive impressions?

  • NSMBU is good
  • Nintendo Land is fun
  • Most of the OS functionality is good (chat, Miiverse) - some ppl even like the UI
  • Browser/YouTube is good for most
  • Some people have had very positive experiences with OffTV play
  • Yoshi's Land Wii U probable
  • 5 years of high quality Nintendo first party titles upcoming

Dont forget TV remote use is awesome lol.

Looking at stock near Targets around me, there are still quite a few stores in stock.

I don't think the online store listing is accurate. I pre ordered mine from Target, picked it up today, and the employee there told me they sold out of extra units about 15 minutes after the store opened. If I search for the Wii U deluxe availability in store at Target online it says the system is in stock, when in fact it is not.

The only thing I can think of is a some people didn't pick up their pre order yet, so it isn't listed as sold in their inventory system. So the website inventory thinks there is stock when in fact there isn't any.

So basically Nintendo is working in overdrive right now to deliver an updated patch due in time for the World Launch on Nov 30.

Right?

Yeah, who isn't excited by the prospect of a TV remote that needs to be specifically turned on, requires two-handed operation, has a battery life of about 3,5 hours active, doesn't work independent of another device and can't control devices found in many home TV setups (like AV receivers).

Dumb question: Does the Wii Classic Controller Pro work for the Wii U? Noticed that there is one that is specifically for the Wii U, just wondered if that meant the one for the regular Wii didnt. Sorry, just jumped aboard this train today, no knowledge of it before hand!

It'll work for it for Wii games or games that support it.

So, do we have like a list of all the disappointing reveals?

  • Ports being subpar
  • Account being tied down to one singular piece of hardware
  • Loading times
  • Disappointing hardware tear down
  • OS/Game hangups

- foreground game update/download installation
- no clock on the main menu

Can we add things like
- no achievements
- no ethernet port
- very limited multimedia capabilities
- weird overall handling of original wii stuff making everything super segmented and not support the tablet controller

Even though we already kind of knew that going in?

The slow OS is the only glaring flaw for me right now. It can really take a while to switch to the Miiverse. Hopefully, they're preparing refinements in time for the Japanese launch.

Beyond that, we have the usual console launch shenanigans -- crappy ports.

Miiverse is really fast for me now. I was having problems this morning but I don't fin most of the UI all that slow.

Now that I've discovered you can have game updates run in the background while you play I've stopped worrying about them too.

I got Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U and Tank! Tank! Tank!...and oddly enough I have found myself playing Tank! Tank! Tank! the most. The game is shallow, stupid fun.

wait wait wait are we taking the yoshi's island wii u "leak" to be credible

are we really

really

please say yes i beg of you

Edit: Incidentally, Yoshi's Island's Athletic Theme just started. Hop! Hop! Donut Lifts I loove you~ Just imagining some of the aesthetics in Nintendo Land for a full Yoshi's Island experience~

So far I'm liking this. I really like the Netflix experience. One thing I don't like is how long the updates are AND that they don't have update notes. I guess I'm spoiled by Vita, since the other consoles don't have it either, but I really like that.

It works amazing for me and my setup. As for the battery, I think they made a big mistake by not including the dock in every console package. That thing is incredibly useful.

The Wiiu pads refresh is stupid fast, enough so that my parents' lg TV is really showing its response time lag when I go from one screen to the other. I'll have to see if my tv can stand it once I move back into living at my own place, but I'm starting to think I'm gonna have to get a new, more capable tv...

I know right? I can't believe how great it is. Playing those chase games on Nintendoland is so great and responsive.

Yup just looked at the plastic and its all jaggy. Fuckin bullshit, of course the console is sold out so I'm fucked. Will Nintendo replace controllers.

yeah you can get in touch with customer service. probably get them to send you a controller out before you send yours in if you are nice.

I just look at it as a game controller that can also control my TV. I know that doesnt help people that might have AV recievers, but my speakers are PC speakers, so I have to get up and turn the volume up/down anyway. Its just a handy bonus feature that I can flip whatever input I want, change channels, and play my console all at once.

So how does the home screen work? Isn't it supposed to show games and stuff the community likes? Mine still shows the base icons plus all the Miis in the area are "NINTENDO"

I know all this, and all my other systems on my monitor display just fine without the need of any settings touches other than - "Display = 1080p"
This is apparently happening on displays that should not have this issue.

I'll blame Nintendo that this is an issue at all to start with. Shouldn't even be there.

Please add overscan compensation in the next patch please. My tv sucks and won't display it correctly via HDMI 720p on a 768p set. Display says its 720p but it stretched the image to 768p rez.

Let me tackle this one by one since you obviously don't have a Wii U and are talking out your ass.

1. You don't need to turn on the remote fully. You can press the TV button and it pops up with the controls in 1-2 seconds whether the Wii U is on or off or the controller is on or off.

2. It doesn't require two handed operation. You can check the forum, lots of people have commented on how light the controller is and at least one nintendoland game RELIES on it being able to be held one handed.

3. If you're using it as a remote you're not going to have the remote on unless you constantly like turning the volume up or down and you can put it in the cradle when it's not in use.

4. The gamepad works 100% independently as a remote. You don't have to be anywhere near your wii U for it to work... literally your Wii U could be cross country and you could still use the controller as a remote.

5. Oh my, you have one point. Grats ;) Though to be fair, it's something that could be fairly easily rectified with an update. Whether it is or not who knows.
