Got a chance to play this for quite awhile today at a friends house, and it is fun system for sure. I still have reservations about 3rd party support with regards to Multiplatform games in the future, but for me the Wii U was always going to be the "Everybody's Second Console" like the Wii became. MiiVerse is a surprisingly cool feature and it is fun interacting in such a seemless way with complete strangers. It is basically a Official Nintendo message board, but more interactive.
I had a great time with Sonic All Stars Racing, even used the gamepad and the screen holds up fairly well. It's a little on the low res side but it is still good, and performance the game held up great on the screen. Also got to play Mario, of course, who dare play a new Nintendo system without playing a Mario game? lol Didn't play much of the main game because it had too much of a been there done that feel to it. 2D Mario to me needs a revamp, but I know it will sell like crazy and no one will care. However, it was a blast in the challenge mode. Very very challenging in that mode to get gold on events. The big surprise to me was Nintendoland. I really didn't see much appealing about this, but it is great fun. At least with a group it is, not sure how it would hold up solo.
There were some issues I have with the system. For one I don't understand how the Wii U gamepad can be bigger and thicker in some cases than tablets and even the Vita and 3DS and not have to deal with handling CPU/GPU processing and such and still only manage 3 hours of battery life. It's as if they skimped on the battery to save cost, but it woefully under performs in battery life. Speaking of battery life is there an easy way to kill the screen on the Gamepad. It at times is needlessly on, and I feel like that is not doing the battery any favors. Perhaps a standby button would be welcome? I feel like a Pro Controller is a necessity for those that want to play games for longer periods of time, which is all the more frustrating that not all games support the Pro Controller, like Mario. Nintendoland is an absolute blast with multiple people so why can't it be played online with other people? I love couch co op just as much as the next person but it can't always happen, but it would have been awesome if my friend and I could have grabbed anyone of those people in the plaza to play some Luigi's Mansion. This is supposed to be the time Nintendo takes online serious and their 2 biggest 1st party titles don't support online play. It's head scratching. Also in about 6 hours I witnessed 3 hard locks that could only be fixed by unplugging the console.
I like the console despite some problems and will gladly buy one when and IF, boy is it a big if, Monolith Soft releases there game AND it gets localized. Also, as a second console getting those Nintendo gems that are sure to drop isn't a bad thing either. Hopefully they do a better job at fostering an online community beyond the MiiVerse.
