Ok, my surround sound speakers work perfectly with the wii u surround sound setting ONLY with assasins creed 3. The OS, nsmbu and nintendoland have the rear speakers silent. Is this user error or there is no surround sound in Nintendos first party offerings?

Well, upscaling is "streching" (and it's apparently done by the Wii U's graphics chip). But they are still displayed in the correct aspect ratio of 16:9.

Stretching to me implies modifying the image negatively.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more people complaining about the glacially slow game installs. This thing makes PS3 installs seem downright zippy.
You missed it then, because it's been covered. Mario is a 1.8 gig download. Took two hours to download it. Fine, maybe servers are getting nailed. But servers dont make the install take 20 minutes. And I thought the PS3 was bad in this regard.

Now that a day has passed, I've noticed the system is running a lot smoother already. My WaraWara Plaza finally started working and filling up with online Miis and I've already fallen in love with the chatter that pops up when idling in the menu. It's fun just to sit and watch all of the messages and images stream into the system.

I also love the Miiverse function in Nintendoland/NSMBU where you can see people's messages after finishing a level or dying at a certain point. It really adds more excitement to the experience and makes even an offline experience feel like it has a fun social aspect.

So, posted this in another thread (probably a wrong one) and the question is stupid, but how do you draw pictures and have your Mii display them? For the life of me I couldnt find it.

Also, ZombieU is obviously love it or hate it. Count me as a +1 in the LOVE side. Game is fantastic!

Is it true that if you go in to play Wii games that it stretches all the games so you can't get them in the correct aspect ratio?

There is some kind of issue here, but it concerns a tiny niche.

It's only about original Wii Virtual Console games being played on Wii U, and it's only a problem for some TVs (Bravias, apparently?)

The thing is that on the original Wii, Virtual Console games were fullscreen. Meaning that it would look stretched on a widescreen TV. You'd have to set the TV to 4:3 mode to make it look right. This was a good thing... if a 480P console auto adjusted the size of the image for widescreen TVs, you'd be losing a lot of resolution.

But now on Wii U, that Wii Virtual Console stuff is being upscaled to 1080P. This is also a good thing. So what's the problem? Well apparently some TVs (Bravias) refuse to engage 4:3 mode when displaying an HD resolution. You can't unstretch the image.

This strikes me as something dumb on the TV maker's side, really. I guess they assumed that everything in HD would always be content pre-formatted for 16:9.

I guess I'll cross-post from the "Wii games upscaled" thread.

Some silly Wii mode video/audio stuff I noticed:

When using HDMI in Wii mode, rather than outputting a direct RGB signal, the Wii U is outputting the same encoded Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr color space image the original Wii used with component cables.

There doesn't seem to be a way to get surround sound with an HDMI reciever. The Wii mode doesn't have its own settings menu; it uses the Wii U's settings. So if the Wii U is in surround sound mode, the Wii mode outputs LPCM 5.1 audio with nothing going to the rear speakers. If you change the Wii U to stereo, you still don't get the games' ProLogic II audio mix.

So what does this essentially mean? No Pro Logic II on Wii games played on Wii U........ (unless you use analog cables?)

Interesting. I don't have anything third party yet, but I can't get my rear speakers to play on my games. Do you have a 7.1 set up? I know I do, and I wonder if that is part of the problem.

I just started seeing messages in the Wara Wara Plaza and Nintendo Land. NSMBU shows some balloons with people's faces in them randomly, but I haven't seen any MiiVerse messages yet. It seems like things are just slowly being implemented.

to see the messages, hit view map on the gamepad.

Nope. I have 5.1, and when I choose 'surround' on the wiiu menu, and sample it, I can hear all 5 chimes. But then, the rear speakers are totally silent in nsmbu, nintendoland and the OS. Have to choose 'stereo' to enable them again. But I know it works, because AC3 has great surround audio.

I haven't tried the Wii cables yet. That's up next.

If that works... it wouldn't be the end of the world... Just keep an analog cable plugged in.

I don't have an HDMI reciever... can you still apply analog/optical/coaxial inputs to an HDMI video source?

You know what would have been perfect for the Wii U and its game pad? Fire Emblem.

I can only imagine playing Fire Emblem for hours on end and taking the game pad throughout the house.
Why haven't they announced another console Fire Emblem yet?!

You can on most HDMI receivers, but not with the Wii U. The Wii U can't output an HDMI signal and use the analog cables at the same time. It is one or the other.

I forgot to mention, I had some trouble connecting to my wi-fi network, but after manually entering the IP/subnet/gateway/DNS, it pretty much worked instantly. Seems the Wii U just has problems automatically obtaining network info.

Wasn't a big deal for me, but this could be a serious problem for the "Wii demographic"

RPGs in general on the gamepad.... dat potential.

I would love to see a Final Fantasy on this. The beauty is that you can put it on the TV for those moments when you want it to be cinematic and important, but you can use the gamepad when you just want to grind and watch TV.

And whether TV or gamepad, it will just be useful to choose your attacks on the screen in front of you. You could even make an RPG where all the stats, menus and junk are removed entirely from the TV, leaving it to be cinematic.

For $99.99, the BestBuy Geek Squad will come to your home and set it up for you...soon.

God damn this forum!! :P

I was completely sure that I had survived a console launch without picking up the latest toy. I'm getting some errands done tonight and decide that I'll pop into WalMart. I told myself that if they had a Deluxe Wii U there that I'd snag it (fully confident that they'd be sold out). Low and behold, there's a deluxe box in the display case. I had the clerk crack it open - convinced that it was just a display box.

Cut to the chase, I'm now on my way home with a new console as well as Mario Bros and Zombie U. Can't deny that I'm pretty damned excited though!

I am really thinking Miiverse is awesome.

its a game-centric twitter, which is nice so my twitter account doesnt get overloaded with gaming stuff. its dumb tat you dint aut follow friends. that needs to be fixed.

Welcome to the club. I know I've been having a blast with mine. Speaking of the console is anyone enjoying the communities feature of Miiverse? I'm enjoying going into them and reading posts. It's actually a lot cooler then I thought it would be.

MUAHAHAHAHAHA. At the same time.

So I understand that in Wii mode the Wii U upscales, but when I play a game in Wii VC, it's widescreen. And, unless I'm crazy, they actually removed the Wii's system settings menu. Is there any way for me to play a VC game in 4:3 without relying on my TV's options? Edit: Options my TV doesn't have! Excellent!

If there's no way to tell old Wii stuff to run in 4:3, this is a gross-ass joke that makes any Wii VC stuff a waste.

Just played some sonic all star racing 2 player. The controller pad screen is kinda blurry. Is this common or is somthing wrong? NSMBu is also kinda blurry and the colors are washed out.

I noticed this too when I played Castlevania. And yeah, there's no Wii settings menu. I do wonder if some future updates is going to add anything,.

Well, it looks like my Wii U shipped from Dell. I thought NSBU shipped, but UPS wants a signature. I had ordered both and both are on the same order. If it's just NSBU, they wouldn't require a signature...not for a $60 game.

It's kind of understandable, in the sense that Wii couldn't/shouldn't have adjusted the ratio for you (at 480P, any bars being added to the side would be lost resolution and for even older games that would have been bizzare/ugly), and now this is just an HD upscale of the Wii.

If you set the TV to 480P. I'm sure you can set it to 4:3 on your TV. You might need to use an analog cable (I don't know the exact reason why your TV denies certain resolutions 4:3 mode... it is HD resolutions or using HDMI cables? Dunno)

Not to say the stretching isn't an issue, but not all Bravias suffer from the Just-scan-mode-only-in-1080p. The 2012 models (HX, at least. Not sure of the EX) let you change that at any time, regardless of resolution.

Good good... as it should be.

So does WaraWara plaza work for anyone? All I have are Nintendo messages telling me I should connect to the Internet. ProTip: I am fucking connected to the Internet.

no :( hopefully soon.

how do you turn down the brightness on the gamepad? i don't see it in the options menu.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is awesome so far, was just playing in my bed the past hour :D

no eshop on Brazil T_T I had to create an US account to access it... also I have to change the country of my system to match the country of my Nintendo ID everytime I change accounts... not a big deal but really annoying...

Playing AssCreed 3 from bed.

Feels awesome. And it seems like a great game. Probably because my brain is grading it on the same curve that it grades portable games on!

Brain hacks FTW
