Most of the complaints are valid though, but some stuff like account transfers don't exactly have immediate impact for people who have the system right now. The various information about the actual operation of the console hardware and software just helps people to decide whether they want to get it at launch or wait a while until features are added or improved.

Oh certainly. WiiU's got problems, man. In spades. The NA launch does feel very much like a beta test. I completely understand why someone would not be interested at all in the WiiU. It's easily my favorite console launch since Wii though, and I think it'll have better lasting appeal (Wii's launch for me was great but in retrospect it was propelled purely on zelda hype)

Wouldn't want people with opinions different than your own muddying the waters, right? It's odd how resistant you are to anyone that has anything negative to say about the Wii U. Why is that? Even Nintendo has acknowledged several of the issues people are seeing. If they can, surely you can too.

HAHA. Nice. Differing opinions don't bother me one bit. Yours are universally trash though. In fact, don't worry about it. I'll put you on ignore and save us both the trouble.

Nintendoland and Mario are great on the pad. Sega Racing, not so much. So it will be a game-by-game thing. I havent tried anything else to comment. Other than the browser, which I think is much better looking on the pad than on the TV.

Is there a definitive list anywhere of games that support off-TV play? I'm looking at "http://www.giantbomb.com/off-tv-play/92-7482/games/" and "http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=499720" (which is largely based on the other link), but are they considered pretty much completely accurate?

Isn't that like saying "2012 is easily my favorite year since 2011"?

edit: Didn't really mean to ridicule -- I was just amused at the wording. I know you're a little bit on edge at the moment, so sorry if this adds a trigger

There're plenty of WiiU-Threads, but since this is the main one i'll ask here.
Does the WiiU support standard PMs between friends?

I know of Miiverse, but thats more like twitter, right? Didn't see anything about PMs yet, so I would like to know that.

You can send messages to people on your friends list in Miiverse I believe. The messages tab that's there.

Edit:

There are valid complaints when it comes to the Wii U. I have some of my own. However it does feel like some will take every opportunity, no matter how small, to push through their "Wii U sucks" feeling. Just need to be more selective about which threads I read or stay in. There are a few I'm not even bothering with anymore now.

I wonder if Miiverse post will be deleted after a certain amount of time passes or after a certain number of post are made. If at some point the beginning post just drop off as they get pushed down further and further and it continues in that fashion.

You can send direct messages to friends from within Miiverse, and I'm pretty sure those are private, so yeah.

Oh whoops :-P misworded. I'm not really on edge, sorry if I'm coming across that way. I guess I should have said in recent memory. I can't really talk about console launches prior to PS2/GC/Xbox since I was too young to pick em up at launch back then

What's wrong with Sega Racing? I thought it was supported. It's one of the reasons I picked it up.

only through miiverse.

the friends list is literally just your list of friends

After haplessly trying to control WWP/channel icons on the TV for a while, I finally figured out that you can do it with the Wiimote. But there's no pointer control at all, which is a shame.

There's such an enormous disconnect between how I feel about this system perusing miiverse and talking with ppl about games there and the GAF hate machine. Reading gaf is just depressing now. This thread seems to have been relatively spared at least.

Yeah, Miiverse is a breath of fresh air compared to GAF right now.

Oh shit I didn't think about the Wii U not having Gamecube controller ports and I got rid of my classic controller... damn! I don't suppose you can use the Wii U Pro controller on VC games.

You cannot.

I'm hoping that Mayflash steps up to the plate with a GC to Wii Remote adapter (they made PS2 to Wii Remote adapters before). My kids won't play Smash Bros. with anything except GC controllers, so that's the only Wii game we go back to the Wii to play (otherwise it's just being used for Gamecube games). Of course, they now have to unlock everything again on the Wii, but they're surprisingly upbeat about that - I expected much dismay when I told them the data was migrated to the Wii U and that they'd have to use the classic controller.

Interesting!

It's pretty good for Nintendo that despite their refusal to market their products, their products are in demand. I suspect that 20% for Wii will shift towards the Wii U once those particular kids realize that the two things are different.

Also, wow at Surface, and I wish Microsoft hadn't diluted that particular branding, since original Surface (a touchscreened "table" used by end users in businesses -- like at restaurants -- that had some pretty nice potential for innovation) seemed possibly great.

Meh Gaf doesn't bother me. Honestly anyone who expected this console to be some graphical beast compared to current gen consoles was delusional. Same with anyone that expected the online to be on par with the 360 and PS3. The only real reason to buy the console is the same reason the last Nintendo consoles had. You buy them for Nintendo games and the occasional 3rd party that does something interesting.

Am I saying it's perfect? Hell no I'm not. The OS needs some work without a doubt. Hopefully Nintendo will put that work in to improve and fix it. However I'm not holding my breath. But it will happily be played by me for years to come.

......
I did and still do think it will be a step up from the 360's 2005 tech. When I learned the hardware cost over $300 to make, that reinforced my expectations.

I'm actually pretty happy about the Miiverse being great. It will be really fun to see it down the line for some games like RPGs, and we'd get hints on where rare or hidden items are. It will also be pretty cool for when the Virtual Console hits Wii U.

It's not so bad, I think. It's not like after E3, where pretty much everything from everyone was a disappointment, and hate was flowing everywhere. My NeoGAF usage went down quite a bit during that time. lol. Still, the Wii U complaints are definitely warranted, and if nobody speaks up, then there won't be any change.

I would be thankful for the amount of backlash the system is getting actually. Even if let's say, most of these people arent actually interested in picking it up, they may inadvertently make it better for those who are.

Am I the the only one who feels like shit for not being able to draw? Some of these posts on Miiverse are amazing.
Don't you think that some of the drawings were posted by Nintendo? Ive seen the same drawings several times and was wondering if the miis were real people or mods

Yeah. I feel like there's a distinct difference between criticism and negativity though. In either, case, I really hope it all leads to a better experience down the line. :-)

Interestingly, despite the problems, I haven't seen anybody expressing an opinion along the lines of Nintendo being "doomed". Everybody seems to be thinking that they're having a decent launch in terms of demand, even if there are objections being brought up as to what they launched or how they launched it.

3 hour download, 1 hour install and now patch? I just want to play ZombiU :(

The latest hubbub is that you can cancel the big patch instead of manually downloading it, and it'll download in the background as you play with other stuff.

A lot of them aren't, my wife is one of those people that can draw really well even with minimalistic tools like what you can do on the service. I guarantee a lot of others can too... especially the pure amount of meme based drawings.

I've heard this too but how will I know it's the big patch in question/can you view progress on the patch in the download manger if you cancel out?

If you've got the "default" Wara Wara plaza then you're seeing pre-populated messages.

If WWP has updated (showing games instead of the system apps) then the messages you're seeing are the ones with a lot of "Yeahs" in Miiverse. You can tap the message and see the user's info, the post, etc.

It's like some reddit/twitter hybrid.

There's a huge disconnect with owning the system and reading about it. Especially when much of its best features are qualitative and not quantitative. I can compare RAM speed and know one is better, I can't exactly do the same for games let alone exclusive ones. Also when people compare features they do it for ones that already exist (How much is this like LIVE?), for ones that don't exist elsewhere (Miiverse) it's hard to understand why you want or need it until you actually have it.

And of course demographics. Miiverse is 100% people with the console so obviously there's more positivity since these are the people who decided to spend $300 on the new Nintendo console and play it before everyone else. The topics are all Nintendo topics. You won't see console wars at all.

Once you select the option to play the game and background download, you can check the progress in the download manager on your controller.
