for those of us who got the basic pack, how do we buy the system stand?
i could have sworn it was going to be included in this set
ghetH.jpg

but the box doesnt mention it at all. is the only option to order it from nintendo's website?

im talking about these

i thought they came in the box with the charging dock and controller stand, but the box doesn't say anything about them.

hey, what are my options (in the US) for getting a second charging cradle?

You can buy all of the Wii U accessories straight from Nintendo. Is includes the stands, cradles, and extra charging cords.

For anyone interested ToysRUS.com is still doing the buy one get one 40% off deal as this moment. Seems to be only for shipped orders though. Not sure when it will end. Seems like the best deal at the moment for Wii U games outside of the eShop if you have a deluxe system where you get 10% back to spend on another game.

Anyone seen a Nyko U Boost? Strap on extra battery for the gamepad, supposed to give you twice the battery life. Looks pretty clunky and won't work with the charging cradle, but has a built in kickstand.

There are also a few third party gamepad chargers on amazon, anyone got those? Probably cheaper than buying another nintendo charger (most also seem to charge wiimotes at the same time)

So about $28 for a cradle and ac adapter. I'd like to have that in a package for $19.99.

So Nyko has already made something? I was hoping it would be a better battery that would actually fit in the battery housing.

There are 3rd party charge bases that charge a gamepad and two wiimotes already

Unfortunately not. Don't know if you'd get a double size battery in there, but a slightly more sleek alternative that his would be nice

So far, the biggest complaint I have about the console is the battery life of the GamePad. I've tried turning down the brightness and turning on power save mode, and it still tops out around 4 hours. I even tried turning the display off while watching Amazon and it lasted maybe an hour more than with the display on.

I really hope someone (Nyko?) steps up to the plate and release larger batteries soon.

Battery life isn't a big deal if you leave it plugged in. The biggest complaint I have with the system is the SLUGGISH OS. When people on GAF said it was slow, i brushed it off. When co-workers mentioned that it was laggy, I figured that they didn't have any patience.

My friend, Nintendo has some work to do.

I'm not a hater and I actually think that the WiiU is an awesome secondary system. I bought the Deluxe version and even (painfully) sold my PS3 for it because having all three systems, an iPad, and a macbook pro was just too much.

So the WiiU is a very pleasant system. All of the menus, music, and user-end stuff are a pretty easy-going experiences. HOWEVER...you will do a LOT of waiting to do ANYTHING.

As soon as you boot up the system, the first update takes an hour. You already know that, though.

Netflix? Amazon? Youtube? ANY Game? Prepare to download the app, then update it. This process takes about 5 minutes each. Okay, let's say that you're patient and decided to download and update all of your 'video' patches all at once. You've already blocked off 20 min to take care of Youtube, Netflix, Amazon, and you've already done the hour long patch. Okay That's already about an hour and 20 minutes of NOT playing ANYTHING.

Now, you've got Nintendo land. Get ready for another patch to download. 2-5 min. NSMB? 2-5 min. I decided to try MiiVerse. Guess what? download another patch. 2-5 min.

I started around 9pm and didn't finish patching everything until about midnight. This was before i could play A SINGLE GAME. This includes creating your accounts, etc. I never owned a Wii, so I did everything from scratch. Also, this includes charging my Gamepad for about 45 min because when you buy it, it recommends charging it.

I decided to download ZombieU. The game was about 5+ gigs, and I set it up to download overnight. I woke up at 8 am this morning to find out that the system turned itself off. It completed about 85 %, so it took another 30 minutes to download the rest.

I finally download it and guess what? IT HAS to install? i'm not too annoyed because PS3 games have to install. Imagine my surprise at the 30 MINUTE install in REAL TIME. As of this writing, with 10 minutes to go, i still can't play zombieU.

Now, if the system is having THESE kind of core problems from Nintendo's architecture from Nintendo themselves, I think people need to REALLY scale back their expectations that the WiiU will EVER be able to complete with even year ONE of the next gen. To be frank, I don't even think that it can capably do the best stuff from THIS gen without compromise.

At first, i thought that the hiccups in some of the launch titles was due to Nintendo just not getting dev kits to developers in a reasonable amount of time. That may be part of it. However, I think that Nintendo kept the costs low, and the tech 'good enough' for a very specific purpose.

I don't think that Nintendo 'ever' reasonably planned to court the really big guys. Looking at their fantastic e-store (think PSN store with FANTASTIC placement of indie games), I believe that Nintendo's plan is to create an amazing space for AA (not AAA) games and indie devs, where they can manage their own prices, fetch more than they would on iOS or other platforms, and have the jewel AAA experiences come, as always, from Nintendo themselves.

Skyrim, GTA, any major open world game? THat's not gonna happen on WiiU. Not without serious technical wizardry. At least, not at parity with current gen stuff.

This makes me SAD because i bought the wii U as a STRONG alt to my PS3, and it has become obvious that now my Xbox 360 will remain my primary. That said, the WiiU is a fantastic device, despite the hiccups. You'll get that 'good feeling' playing the family friendly games. NintendoLand, when you finally get around to playing it, is a BLAST. I've played nearly every mini game, and love them all.

There's a lot to like about the WiiU, and a lot of odd hiccups like antiquated menu navigation and, GOD THE WAITING ON EVERYTHING.

Anytime my wife takes a nap, wakes up, and asks, "You're STILL not playing anything?" You have a problem.

That's pretty much a load of garbage. These games can all be handled.

Where did you find that? Big W's online price is the best I've seen so far: AU$388 for Premium, free delivery. Won't get it at launch if you do that though, I don't think.

I'm in New Zealand and found it at MightyApe.co.nz.

I would not count on any significant or worthwhile EA support.
It's starting to feel a bit like this yeah. How petty.

Do they still sell the WiiMote Plus attachments in stores. I am talking about the small piece that attached to the bottom of an old school WiiMote.
Dunno if they ship to your country, but I buy my stuff from NZGameshop.com. I just bought a Wii Motion+ attachment from them.

So I got up at 7 this morning and went to all stores (Walmart, target, Kmart, toys r us, etc) in a 30 mile radius. No luck. All sold out. Then I remembered a GameStop just opened up about 10 min walk from my house. I called and they said they have 2 basic sets left. Picked one up from there. Its updating right now. Can't wait to goes in NSMBU once its done.

Cool. I've been saying for a while now, even though I have the deluxe, I don't think the basic unit is a bad version, because if you play to buy digital games, you can just get a hard drive, and solve all those worries about space being an issue. The extra stuff the deluxe comes with is nice, and a luxury, but I wouldn't call them a requirement. Although, I do pretty much keep my gamepad on the charge dock when it's not being played. I guess i'd recommend buying one of those separately too, but they're not hard to find.

I'm between patients and wanted to jump in to say: I'm not big on Internet gaming, but after playing NSMBU late last night and seeing various Nintendo-GAF folks' names and comments on the Mario world map, I'm starting to appreciate the online aspects a bit more. It was charming, and bit surreal after such a seemingly long wait. :)

is there anywhere I can find out what controllers are compatible with each game?

Going to get Nintendoland, NSMBU and ZombiU on the UK launch.

The back of came covers tell you what controllers are compatible. You would have to visit the Wikipedia page of each game to find out what controllers it supports.

In terms of the 3 games you are picking up at launch, the pro controller will only work with ZombiU multiplayer.

Also I disabled vibration hoping to extend the life of the controller. Lol. I need to get another charger

There's a post in one of these Wii U threads (there's so many, I forget, it might be this one?) where someone called Nintendo and was told it was a known problem and was to be addressed in the second system update.
Really? Better than CCPro?

But again, will the old CCPro work with Wii U games?
they're out of their mind. I have the white classic controller (not the pro, though i'm sure i'd like it as much or more) and i easily prefer it. I'd play zelda and mario and pretty much everything on the classic controller if given the choice -__-

should have ask them will it take an hour to download like last time :(

Is the initial (1GB) WiiU update 'universal'? I fully expect to receive my UK WiiU next Thursday if not earlier, when it does arrive will I have to wait until Friday to download the update or will it already be 'out'?

My Wii still freezes, my PS3 freezes and my Xbox freezes. I doubt Nintendo will solve this issue.

It has only happened to me on my Wii U *once* when I hit the eject disc button right as a game was booting up, but I chalked that up to being my bad since you really shouldn't do that anyway.

I agree that system freezes are a part of just about any complicated electronic device now and then but if you've been reading the reports of freezes here on GAF and elsewhere it seems elevated above what you'd expect. I hope they can address it through software.

Amazon Germany lets you preorder Wii Us again. Theres a catch though. You´e preordering from the second batch. Shipdate is dec. 12th! Theres a message on the Amazon Wii U site explaining that!

GLAD i preordered eraly!

While trying to set up my wii u, it automatically shut down and the red light by the power button started to blink. I tried it again and again and again...it stays on about 5 minutes through the set up and turns off again with the red blinking light. I have the red light of death :(

I'll probably have to wait for the next shipment to get another one. I am very unhappy.

Yesterday I finally received my Wii U from EBGames (turned out it took so long because it was chosen for inspection, heh) only to discover I have the same problem you did. From the very first moment I turned it on it started doing rhythmic clicking sounds (with a period of 1 second or so), then after 5 minutes it shuts down and the red light starts blinking. I had a hunch so I touched the console and it was very hot, I unplugged it, turned it on again and this time took a look to its rear fan...only to discover it didn't spin at all, and that the clicking sound is the fan getting stuck in...who knows what.

And BTW, it seems we are not the only two people with this problem

So yeah, now I'm trying to find what sucks less, either sending the console in to nintendo or to EBGames.

Damn my luck.

I've had two freezes - both in the "old" Wii Menu. Both times I've had to physically unplug the unit as holding down the power button (either the console OR the gamepad) did nothing. =\

NBA fans are crazy on Miiverse. Trying to get more info about 2K13 so far I think its lower framerate and no Jersey Physics on the Wii U version?

I am thinking of downloading it off eShop

Whilst these are all perfectly valid complaints about how many updates, etc are needed on the console, I do kind of think you made it much worse for yourself than it had to be.

You didn't have to install all the video apps, patch every game and download/install ZombiU before you played anything. You could have just stuck NintendoLand straight in after the initial system update and started playing it. If you wanted to do everything in one big chunk that's fair enough, but it's not like the console just flat-out wouldn't let you use it until the next day.

Is Scribblenauts worth $60? It looks fun, but I don't know if I'm willing to pay that much just based on a few videos I've seen on YT..

My assumption is that only North America will need the 1GB Wii U update - they rushed the system out for us to be here in time for Black Friday, so they didn't have time to preinstall the update on our systems. But the other regions should get pre-updated systems.

Having said that, if the UK consoles do need the update, I don't see why Nintendo would wait before putting it up for download - for the US and Canada we had to wait til the last minute because Nintendo was working on it until the last minute (as evidenced by how late in the process they delayed TVii - obviously they couldn't get problems with TVii worked out in time so had to disable it). But now the patch is done, no need to delay it for the UK.

I agree with many of the issues you wrote about as I experienced them as well (the long updates and install times). However, one thing that you may not be aware of, and it's good to know for future game purchases: When it wants to update - there's a button that you can select that says "play game now" or something like that. If you press that, you can play the game right away, and the update still downloads in the background! No more waiting around - just play your game like normal and the update will be ready for you later. I wish I'd have known this earlier, but it's good information to have for the future.

Sainsbury's seems to be sending out emails now. Just got mine and it looks like I will be getting it day one despite the hiccup with my card. Goodo.

The "Start Software" on my Wii U is one up on my PS3. If you cancel out of an update on the PS3 it doesn't download it in the background. Thankfully with PS+ I don't worry about that kind of stuff anymore unless it's on a brand new game.

I think the 360 uses voodoo on their updates as they are always tiny.

yeah, the long installs are a bit strange, considering the 360 and vita both don't do that (i don't think sony can fix it on ps3, but the vita proves they can and likely will for ps4). i was a bit disappointed with that, but it's not too big of a deal if you've had a ps3 ha.

i agree with pretty much everything in your post. i never had a wii, so this is a new experience for me regardless, and i am happy to finally play the gems from wii, as well as upcoming wii u games. it's definitely a solid system, but it has its issues.

Uh oh.

Might not be getting a Wii U until next year now. Just put down £1200 deposit on a new house.

Ah well.

How do you buy a house with a 1200 deposit? Mortgages are needing larger and larger deposits these days.

Anyway, congrats.

For patching, as they work in the background (including the system one), you could just start each game that you have, press the button to skip waiting for the update (so it'll download in the background), then quit to the main menu. Rinse and repeat, then leave your gamepad charging and do something else. Come back and everything should be up to date
