New Sonic game rumored to be unviled in February for almost every platform

You gotta love Sonic physics videos lol.

Anyway I was always aware of how Generations handled in comparison to the originals, but it just feels like they are balanced differently. To me it's different, but it feels just as fun. I can confidently dance through the level like in the old way (unlike Sonic 4)

I like that the spindash was "overpowered", it's more of an instantaneous burst to get going. Must the goal of Sonic be to emulate the originals exactly?

But yeah I'd like to be able to spin and not slow down. Rolling through the levels was my fave Sonic 3 pastime...

The reason why Classic Sonic's physics feel so good are that the levels are built to his strengths. They're designed around how he controls very well, even if his controls aren't 1:1 with the Genesis games. Mind you, he does have good 2D physics, and I enjoyed his levels. But they still have their weird thing about actively nerfing the roll, making the loops too big, and so on. I'm not hung up on it, because the levels are so well designed around how he works in Generations, but there's nothing wrong with pointing out that there are still differences.

Oddly enough the Dimps version of Generations has pretty much perfect Classic Sonic physics, even the rolling. It's just the level selection that sucks so much there. (Copied over Mushroom Hill so exactly, they even left in a checkpoint that's supposed to be right before a boss, but there's no boss there, just the goal.)

This.

I'm as picky as it gets when it comes to perfect physics in games, but I thought Classic Sonic in Generations felt damn good. Not perfect, but very, very good.

Yes I'm sure they would never get the slow turn-by-turn nature of the imaginary sonic games you play

And Retro Studios? seriously? have any of you played Bayonetta? Vanquish?

Sonic is not their style. A remake of Shadow the Hedgehog would be more their speed.

The roll physics didn't feel good. If you tried to roll you'd just slow down and come out of it back into a run... There were several times where I would spindash and Sonic would come out of a roll while he was off screen and hit an enemy. Completely defeats the point of spinning to have him come out of it.

I enjoyed the space colony stage with maria and that awesome music that went along with it <3 and that clone of final rush from SA2

No wii? Sega is really dumb to shun the platform that gave them incredible sonic sales

They're supporting Wii U, so they're not. Making a Wii version would be, at best, porting the 3DS game, at worst yet another completely different game for them to worry about, for an outdated platform.

The source elaborates that the console version of this new game will be sticking with the recent formula seen in Sonic Unleashed (Daytime), Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations where gameplay switches between full 3D movement and 2D side-scrolling sections.
Fuck.

I'm bored of this gameplay.

The story in the Adventure games wasnt overdone, but the voice acting was terrible

And Sonic 06, is there anything about that game that didn't suck? I accidentally heard the theme song the other day and it was just unbearable, the end sounded like the lead vocalist was cutting himself.

Sonic is not their style. A remake of Shadow the Hedgehog would be more their speed.

Oh noes! a Shadow game that plays like Vanquish or MGS:R? who would want to play that...

How about EVERYBODY?

I'm hyped, Colors was blissful and Generations had presentation out of the ass. All of that with delicious Next Gen™ added can only lead to a good thing. On a side note, anyone kinda entertaining a pet conspiracy theory that the announcement of this game is going to coincide with either a Sony or Microsoft blowout or another Nintendo Direct with all the emphasis on not doing their usual "guess what's coming up next" on Hedgehog Day? (Given this rumor being true of course.)

Wii-U gamepad for Tails ? :p
Each one could take a different path by default and have similar parts in a level where coop is needed.

Sonic : one way to play the level
Tails : another way to play it
Both : coop mixing both parts

Maybe a bad idea but with or without exclusive features for Wii U they have a good start with colours and generations so I'm probably going to buy it (on Wii U or on another system).

Multiple playable characters?

Finally.

I mean, it was getting rather tiresome to have Sonic be the only playable character when multiple other characters have proven to be enjoyable to also play. I'm glad Sega finally stopped ignoring them.

If I had to guess as to who's playable:

Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Amy
Cream
Shadow
Rouge
Blaze
Espio (or maybe Team Chaotix as a single "character")
Silver/Metal Sonic?

If they can get their gameplay down, this could be the most replayable Sonic game in a loooooong time. Although, this is assuming that the source is true, but I'll just remain hopeful.

I'm hyped, Colors was blissful and Generations had presentation out of the ass.

Actually, Sonic Generations seemed to have rather sloppy presentation to me. Unleashed is where I feel the presentation of the series was at its best. Of course, Generations was still the far better game.

Hey guys! I I think Sega finally figured out a successful formula for the sonic franchise! Pfft. let's hope.

One source has shared what they allege to be details about the new game. The game’s title doesn’t appear to be finalized yet, but its platforms are. It will be released on Wii U, PS3, 360, 3DS, PS Vita, PC, and “Next gen” consoles.

Sega does what Capcom don't ;)

Why do people keep saying this as if Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations (two games that were overall great to both the fans and critics) never happened? >_>

I really hope this game has 3DTV support, like Generations. 3D's not great in every situation, but it turned out to be a perfect match for a fast-moving colorful thrill ride like Sonic.

Make no mistake: the memo really didn't get out to everyone that Sonic is good again. The Sonic Cycle really did persist long enough that many people gave up... And just when they did? Colors and Generations came out and they didn't notice.

Personally when I heard people tell me those games were good, I thought they meant in some relative fanboy sense.

I like that part.

I agree, but look how that turned out for Generations.

...But, according to this rumor, they'd be supporting Nintendo's console this time, the Wii U.

As it is, presumably there'd be one version of the game developed for PC/PS3/360/Wii U, which is down-ported to Vita, and up-ported to Sony and Microsoft's next console (better framerate, higher polygon models and visual effects, etc). Assuming it's Hedgehog Engine, they pretty much need a second, different game developed for the 3DS, since it presumably can't handle the Hedgehog Engine. Enter Dimps, who'll throw together something. So that's at least two different games being developed with the same name.

We know they're not interested in getting the Hedgehog Engine to work on Wii, or they literally can't, so they either have to make the Wii version be a port of the 3DS version, or they have to develop a completely separate, third game just for the Wii, which will be a very budget-minded console at that point. And there's plenty of budget Sonic titles on that platform already.

Good. I need my 3D Sonic fix.

Hopefully this is true. The fact that it's in the same vein as Colors and Generations makes me very happy.

Likewise. I know we'll see the same "lol Sonic" jokes here after awhile (or already) but Colors and Generations are fun games. Great looking and sounding too...hopefully they dont try to shoehorn some worthless extra mechanics.

Hope the level designs are similar more to Colors and the Genesis levels in Generations than Unleashed's in terms of aesthetics. Crazy ass J-Pop mixed with Escher suits Sonic far more than slightly Pixar-fied real life locations.

Sonic games are on a bit of a roll lately, so count me in as interested.

I agree Colors and Generations were both solid titles. I only played Generations on 3DS, but I have many hours logged on that game. SEGA actually listening to the fans was the best thing they have done. I hope we never see stuff like Sonic the Werewolf, or Sonic the human lover, or Shadow the 3rd person shooter/action game ever again.

If you liked that version you really owe it to yourself to play the main version. Steam version should be pretty cheap by now.

It didn't register with me before, but switching between 2D and 3D gameplay has been a Sonic staple from the beginning. So the Generation approach is probably the most logical progression of the classic games.

The OP excited me for a second, then I realised the best thing about Generations for me was the soundtrack, and even then it was limited to the Mega Drive levels. I don't care for lyrics on my Sonic themes. I ended up selling Generations, which is something I have only done a select few times this generation. That said, I'll probably end up buying it again on Steam one day, to see if I enjoy it any more the second time round.

Steam isn't an option since I only have a bottom of the line laptop, but once I get my PS3 back it's on my must buy list.

You could say it goes back as far as Sonic 2, with the bonus stage.

That's not surprising. I love that Sonic team cares about the soundtrack almost as much as the gameplay, and it has been that way since the beginning. Hell they even brought in Michael Jackson (RIP) to lend them a hand in the Sonic 3 soundtrack. Also, SA2B's soundtrack is still my favorite soundtrack in any game....ever

...the 3DS version will be another Sonic Rush styled game.

ARGH!

Please get rid of Dimps and get someone with some actual ambition onto Nintendo handheld Sonics, Sega. We had two Sonic Adventures on the Dreamcast, and the 3DS more than keeps pace with that hardware. Stop giving us watered down, Rush-style Sonics.

If true I'm interested to see how they differentiate the characters enough between a single level. I mean the Sonic Advance games also had Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy as playable characters, but the actual meaningful difference between them level wise was incredibly minimal. If you're playing as Knuckles, you're basically playing as Sonic with the ability to get out of a tough spot by climbing.

If there's a ton of characters to play as, will they just split it into the speed / flight / power categories they always do? I mean if Knuckles could glide through a Sonic Unleashed 3D level it'd be pretty nuts, since they're either incredibly linear (Green Hill) or wildly open (Seaside Hill)

Good, they're sticking to the recent modern gameplay for the time being, they need to iron out the 3D sections for this style but when they do it'll be pretty swell.
Not sure about the multiple character thing in this game engine but i'll just have to wait and see.

Absolutely, the zanier the locations the better.
