Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Technically, all systems are region free. When they are hacked with CFW they all play games from all regions. The only time we will get a region free system is when the console maker makes it a violation of certification to have a region lock on a game.

Wait wat...

Are you serious???

Bwa-hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Not really surprised to EU getting the next Playstation next year. I presume they feel like that EU already sewn up and don't feel enough pressure to try and compete on release dates since the EU sony faithful will just wait to buy it rather than buy the next xbox anyway.

current: 176 GB/s = 5500Mt/s*256bit/8 (same for 8GB if they use clam shell design)
stacked DDR3: 204.8GB/s = 1600Mt/s (cheap like used in WiiU) *1024bit/8
normal DDR: 68.265 = 2133Mt/s (like in next XBox) * 256/8

Thanks for the info, but I don't really understand why the GB/s figures don't correlate with the Mt/s figures.

While Europe does favor the PlayStation brand, I have to disagree. I think if the rumor is true (i.e. PS4 misses Europe this year) the 2014 release has more to do with supply, localization and legalities rather than market faith.

Annouce Oculus Rift support, plskthx!

If Sony wanted to do VR, they could blow Oculus out of the water. They actually have the resources to make custom low-latency, extra-wide panels that Oculus doesn't have the ability to do.

I'd actually be slightly more interested in seeing MS do it, though, because a VR headset in conjunction with Kinect's full-body-modeling/tracking could be pretty interesting.

This is a meaningless distinction. PS3 is the only effectively region-free home console in the past 2 decades.

With a bus 32byte large (256bits), 5500MT/s means 5500 millions * 32bytes per second.
If the bus is wider, bandwidth increases without the need for extra transfers/s (higher frequency).

If Sony is taking the social media route, maybe they should make an integrated social medium for the PS4. Instead of uploading to Youtube/Twitter/etc, make it linked to something like PS4 social media app that is directly linked to your PSN account. Hell take it even further. Everybody having their own profile akin to facebook, but for gaming where you can send messages and post stuff on walls.

But yeah too much effort and it'll be too expensive.

Besides the effective data-rates of the chips it is also important how many memory cells you can access in parallel, multiplying the speed.
Stacked RAM allows wider interfaces (more lanes) without costing too much main board space and cost.
If Sony goes with a 1024 lane interface with DDR3, they could use cheap, slower RAM and still reach their performance target.

I think he means that it's software based. Not hardware.

Like region encoded DVD players that can be unlocked with a combination of button presses for example.

The manufacturer sets the region within the software, meaning technically they are all region free, as in hardware wise.

8 GB GDDR? Bwahahaha! Forums at it again : Constructing wild figures only to express disappointement and sorrow!
4 GB of that RAM would be a blessing.
Either the article is bogus; or Sony's been intent on using solwer RAM from the get-go; or it is to be understood that the rumor concerns the end results, not the capacity.
Otherwise, still not sold on the notion that Orbis is the more powerful of the two. I made a 100$ bet that Durango would come up on top...The way the author phrases his piece suggests that he doesn't know much about Durango (GPU from unknown source...lol!).

lol why?

2014?

Argh for fucksake. Staggered releases are so fucking stupid.

I'm going to download a Playstation 4 ... fuck you Sony.

Wasn't this similar to the PS3 and the 360?

both had same amount of total RAM, 512mbs.

but half of Sony's RAM was faster RAM right?

Yeah, but why the stacked DDR3 is only 1600Mt/s, eventhough it's GB/s figure is higher than GDDR5's?

Or does the bolded below answer that?

Well, that sounds good, if it's only doable within this year.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but

PSP (launch unit) = 32MB RAM x 16 = 512
PSV = 512MB RAM

PS1 = 2MB RAM x 16 = 32
PS2 = 32MB RAM x 16 = 512
PS3 = 512MB RAM X 16 = 8192
PS4 = 8GB RAM

Hell yeah, Edge is right :P

Uk isnt and i think they could lose some market in the rest of the eu by delaying the release there.

So if PS4 has 8GB OF GDDR5 (lol), what's stopping MS for putting in a whopping 16GB DDR3 ram on the next Xbox (if we count out how complex the motherboard would be and added price) if they want to counter PS4? Also what's stopping MS so they can have the price at 100 dollars cheaper than PS4?

Because it doesn't make sense? 8 GB of GDDR5 doesn't make sense either, but let the guys keep dreaming. :)

Amazing.

I will forgo eating ice cream for a whole month if that turns out to be the case. I do not see it happening, at all. 5-6GB tops with GDDR5... TOPS.

My point was that the region locking has always been done on a software level, not a hardware for all systems of all time... not just current ones. Unless you count chucks of plastic inside the system that just prevented cartridges from being plugged in from another region like the N64 then it was a hardware block. Console makers need to put their foot down and say they won't certify a title if there is a region lock. Make region locking a violation of TRC's.

not really. the ps3 had a weaker GPU on top of split ram. the 360 had unified ram and a stronger gpu.

this time around it's unified ram on both ends, but Sony has somewhere near 3x the bandwidth on top of a stronger gpu.

Excitement...and a healthy dose of beer. But I intend on fulfilling my moral obligation, or, even better, getting the cash.
Honestly, it makes no sense to me that Microsoft could release something less powerful, even by a slight margin. Let's wait for both reveals then...

the first thing that came to mind when i read about the video sharing feature was this:

except now, using a ps4, you actually can show them online!

higher profit margins makes sense for anyone >_>

Sony learned a lesson from Microsoft, and that is to make a system that is basically a customized PC that is very easy to develop for. And that you can have great graphics with practical, preexisting CPU/GPU combos that don't take an alien programming language to make games for.

CELL is officially one of the most expensive and impractical computing mistakes ever devised. Rest in peace, neural net processor.

Am I the only one, who thinks things like this are just a waste of resources? I just don't understand why everything should be able to be shared via internet nowadays. I just want to play my games.

You are not alone.

We just like to game alone.

Eff the social media stuff.
