Pachter -PS4 will feature "hyperrealistic games" and "render games at 240fps"

There was a thread recently about DMC being over 200fps on PC. And yes, some games won't do that, that's why I said "maybe not the best example". But it was just that, an example to illustrate that they will be more powerful. Not a scientific statement about graphics technology.

Except that he presented it that way, and is now backpedaling.

Like I said earlier... Don't use UE3 as a framerate benchmark when the engine itself running the game is dated and scales well for powerful hardware.

I don't know if it has been said before, but back in the early PS3 days the fact that the machine could render at 120 fps was mentioned and promptly ridiculed by almost everyone. Fast forward a few years and, well what do you know, if you want to render stereo 3D at 60 fps you do need to render at 120 fps. While as far as I know only one game does this (Super Stardust HD in case anyone is curious), it turns out that having this capability and touting it was not as ridiculous as we thought at the time. Now, I have no idea why on earth we might need 240 fps (although the Oculus Rift would certainly benefit from the highest possible refresh rates), but I don't see a downside to the capability either.

I still think that's wrong unless the game in question is Quake 3.

Well aside from PC versions of games running at 200+ FPS you can't really say that it's unfeasible. Some of the most beautiful games I've seen can run at a high FPS. It's all down to the artsyle. I mean look at something like Wind Waker, because of it's artwork it still holds up today as a good looking game but could run if optimised correctly at a huge FPS.

Pachter, the reason GAF hates you is because you talk out of your ass like so many people on here do but you get paid to do it as if your opinion is somehow worth more than that of a random internet forum member. Like so many economists your analyst predictions are worth jack squat yet somehow you still have a job when people with more skill in their pinky fingers are out of work.

These internet appearances/interviews are not his job.

Pachter, gonna be frank with you since you read these boards- you are in the business of telling people where to put money and invest it. I would stop talking specifics these days, like saying PS4 will have 240 fps. Guessing is OK when you say "Sony is in a position to have a really good potential in the initial market" but saying "Sony is going to have lasers shoot out of it's next system" isn't doing you any favors.

On top of that, your past predictions are killing you like they did all the "psychics" did before.

I really unfortunately don't agree with you on a lot of points in the market, either. The video game market is right now so up in the air due to so many factors it's impossible to analyze anything without listing "what ifs" due to the nature of Nintendo's unpredictability in what they do, Sony's current financial issues and Microsoft's current poor performance as of late with product launches. I would honestly not invest in any of them because the sector is too volatile to bother with as is...

...so yeah, anyways uh- good luck predicting a currently unpredictable market environment.

This dudes a character. Its as if he has a few scotches before voicing his opinions every dammed time.

Whenever I see 'Pachter' in a title I know its going to be hilarious.

Remember that the clock speed is half of the ps3. So cycles to instructions ratio is going to be well interesting to compare.

Ummm super stardust can be rendered at 120hz. It is the only example I got.

There is one game on the xbox 360 that ran at 120hz but I don't remember.

Super Stardust doesn't really do 120hz, it does 60Hz for each eye in 3D mode. It can't do a single 120Hz output.

But yeah, as said above it's only a limitation of the PS3 output, Cell and RSX could do 240fps with simple enough graphics.

DmC running at 200fps on high end PCs doesn't necessarily translate to 240fps on next gen consoles. And the phrase, "capable of rendering games at 240 frames per second" is so vague that it's essentially meaningless. The current gen consoles are also capable of rendering games at 240 frames per second.

I thought on the playstation blog that the devs stated that 2d players would get a benefit.

I have feeling that we will about 240 fps from companies as a market hook.

On Tuesday, I'm taping a show dedicated to how GAFfers are (mostly) smart and are (mostly) assholes. It should be fun.

Yes, I always wonder what will set GAF off, and this was truly an innocent comment. To be honest with you, I have no idea how many frames per second the human eye can process, am pretty sure it's more than 60 fps, since we can all see the difference between 30 and 60, but I have no clue if we can see more than 120 fps, or if we can even see that. I was merely explaining to Cliff Edwards that four times the processing power would make the machine capable of rendering at that speed. I have no idea what the games will look like, which features they will incorporate, but my guess is that the specs will be sufficiently powerful that developers won't be particularly constrained from getting the look and feel that they desire. As one commenter pointed out, PC games have once again moved past console games, and each new generation of consoles allows the consoles to partially catch up.

GAF usually reacts if I comment on technical specifications, charging more money for anything, or make any comment that has the word "Nintendo" in it. To answer your question, I always presume that if I talk about any of these topics, GAF will go ballistic.

And as you pointed out, I'm amazed at the asshole factor on this website. The asshole/civil ratio must be 2:1 or more.

the shit you "predict" is just ridiculous my dude. It's almost never right.

Mr Pachter, I will tell you civilly, PC games have been considerably ahead of consoles, from at the very least November 2007 when Crysis shipped. I would argue before that, but at least from that point on arguing would be utterly moronic.

Ach, there you go again Michael, trolling guesswork statistics without backup!

I mean, for all I know, the asshole/civil ratio might well be something like 2:1 - or at least in the threads you frequent.

But really. Compared with the rest of the internet, that is a pretty damn good ratio - which I'm sure you know.

I suspect there's just a whole lot of mutual trollin' going on here.

;-)

at least he's close on one of his predictions give him a break!

I wouldn't really say so, yes Crysis was a huge leap, but really all we get on PC is console ports with 1080p and AA options these days.

If I were you, Pachter, I would just expect these reactions. I don't mean they should be acceptable, but there's noise in the world and we just have to block it out. You have a bold, reckless style about your analysis that is either sink or swim. Surely you must know this approach is provocative and that rude frustration would result from some people who have been limited to a one-way conversation with you over many years.

Personally, I watch your show, and I enjoy it when YOU enjoy it. Your predictions and analysis are entertaining, but your reasoning behind them is what is most interesting to me. Sometimes the latter is lacking, but if I ever find that is too common, I'll just stop paying attention.

We should stop feeding this guy.

Its obvious he wants attention. Dont give him what he wants and he'll be a thing of the past.

His agenda is obvious.

It's me. The avatar was made by a GAFfer. I thought it was funny, adopted it as my own.

Yes, we're really taping a show about GAF and all the negativity. I think I'm only part of it, think they are going to interview others as well.
Maybe you should stop making stupid predictions. Fuse will never sell 5 million copies and you said it would, for example.

Pachter is a genius. How else does an outsider gain a foothold in an industry? He is just an analyst at an investment bank after all. He raises his own profile when he says stupid shit like this and is discussed all over the internet.
