PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

I believe this is needed

Now where's the bird?

Between this and the Gaikai PS3 streaming thing (I know that's in the future, but they must be confident if they mentioned it here), I think a lot of the tech gurus here on Gaf look like silly billies right now.

Abso-fuckin'-lutely. Honestly not worried about Durango's RAM situation after this, because they know what they're dealing with now and they can easily compensate, upgrade, or redesign.

No they really can't.

The dev kits specs are well and truly locked if they want an autumn release this year.

God damn were we off!

I never in a million years thought we were getting more than 4GB of GDDR5 I just never thought that.

As people have said based on how off we were about these spec's Microsoft could very definitely have a much more powerful machine than we know because right now after this:

PS4 >>> Durango

I was already leaning toward getting it but this cemented it. The specs are above what I expected but honestly the UI and all the OS features + the cloud stuff is what made me sure.

Having 8GB of VRAM available (well I'd imagine closer to 6 as the system will no doubt need a fair bit by the sounds of it) but if it has the rumoured GPU that it does then I can't see the point, it won't have enough power to utilise all of it.

4GB VRAM would've likely been plenty.

It's gonna be big for devs. They know how to use it.

Hope y'alls wallets are ready, that shit doesn't come cheap.

Ram is everything. I'll be expecting something big from the magicians at Naughty Dog that will have access to this hardware.

That 8GB has to function both as VRAM and system RAM.

The subtle hints dropped here and there were enough for me to clue in, so while it was still a surprise I knew there was a good chance of it happening :)

Really interested in seeing how it's all put together though. That is a lot of chips.

8GB of GDDR5 was indeed the big "holy fucking shit!!!" moment of the presentation. The fuck can they possibly do with all that memory?

It's unified so it's not just for the GPU anyway. Honestly with consoles lasting 7+ years you can never have too much ram to start with.

I'm willing to pay $500 day 1 Sony. The conference was amazing. Everything I hoped it to be. No way am I getting another Microsoft console and paying for Live ever again.

I'm very happy with what I heard from the conference. We will get more information on games later, I'm not worried about that. What I'm worried about is the pricing. I have a bad feeling Sony is going to be the most expensive console again. If it is Sony has no chance of chipping away from XBox consumer base.

I said "wat" out loud when he dropped this info. This is nuts. The price though....

I'll buy it at whatever price though.

I think this indicates they expect this generation to last 7-8 years+ as well.
