PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

Good grief. It is almost unbelievable. Its like Kaz reads Neogaf, saw all the memory threads, and went "I'll give you fucking ram. . ."

How the hell are PC ports going to work? No one is rocking 8GB of GDDR5.

8GB of GDDR5 was indeed the big "holy fucking shit!!!" moment of the presentation. The fuck can they possibly do with all that memory?

Looking at all of the background stuff, I wonder how much of it is actually usable to developers.

StevieP, Proelite, Thuway, BruceleeRoy etc..... where is your 4GB now?

Joking aside, I wonder how much would be actually available for games development.

I thought MAYBE theyd bump up to 6 GBs of GDDR5...but they said fuck that weak shit and went balls out. Just hope they can keep the system cool and the price down.

Imagine GT6, MLB The Show, Uncharted...faces will fucking melt.

I'm very happy with what I heard from the conference. We will get more information on games later, I'm not worried about that. What I'm worried about is the pricing. I have a bad feeling Sony is going to be the most expensive console again. If it is Sony has no chance of chipping away from XBox consumer base.

I couldn't care less who's base they chip at......I'll pay for 8gb of ram no problem.

God damn were we off!

I never in a million years thought we were getting more than 4GB of GDDR5 I just never thought that.

As people have said based on how off we were about these spec's Microsoft could very definitely have a much more powerful machine than we know because right now after this:

PS4 >>> Durango

Well, the fact that everybody was wrong regarding PS4 RAM (except for EDGE) makes me question the leaks concerning Durango (althought VGLeaks was right on the money on both the CPU and GPU account).

I think I might switch next gen from xbox to PS if Xbox doesn't bring it when they announce. I missed most of the show did he specifically say 8 GB GDDR5 if so can somoene link to it yet?

I think it's really interesting that when it was thought to be 4GB of GDDR5, there was a lot of talk that PS4 still might have the advantage, if MS is indeed using DDR3. I'm having a hard time comprehending just what kind of glorious results we'll see if the specs on the new Xbox turn out to be true. We might finally see multiplatform games looking better on a Sony console for the first time ever.

I wasn't impressed by any of the games, and while the system features were cool, most of them were expected.

But this...this is a big deal. Nice one, Sony.

Someone feel like PMing me a brief explanation for why this is such a big deal? What will it allow consoles to do that they couldn't do before? etc

No they really can't.

The dev kits specs are well and truly locked if they want an autumn release this year.

You mean like those PS4 devkit specs with 4 GB RAM? All the 720 specs are from a document that is more than one year old. Of course thing's have changed since and it's no big deal to switch from 8 GB RAM to 12 or even 16. Actually going to 16 GB DDR3 would be much cheaper than going from 4 GB GDDR5 to 8.

So with 8 gb ram what can we expect? bigger levels? more enemies?

Bigger, more detailed levels, more characters with again, more detail. The big thing about having lots of RAM is having high detail assets easily accessible by the GPU. With enough RAM you can easily stream large levels with sumptuous detail in every nook and cranny.

what is the price of 8gb gddr5

I am a total layman but when I look for DDR5 ram and I see video cards out there with 1gig of it and they cost $200, I worry. I know Sony will eat a lot of the cost, but how much can they eat?
