League of Legends hits 5 million peak concurrent players.

Congrats to Riot, this really is an amazing number.

I don't get all the hate for this game. If LoL has 5 million concurrent player, and DOTA has like 300k...I would say for sure that LoL is doing many things right.

Its okay mate, we're fine playing the superior game with superior developers.
....oh wow.

Well it's true, Valve needs to implement more stripper poles.

Certainly. Starting with being an official, released product.

Compare it to Call of Duty vs Counter Strike/Quake/UT. One is the far more popular shooter, but people all over the world will (rightfully?) shit on it for being dumbed down in comparison to the shooters of yore.

This just in: Variety of different playstyles available is now a bad thing.

Come on guys! The shitty boring heroes are a feature because playing with, as or against boring heroes is variety! Imagine if it was all interesting heroes, it would be so uninteresting!

I have no idea why DoTA 2 players make this kind of argument but it really doesn't convince me that skeleton king is actually a master work of hero design.

Ogre Magi isn't complex. Random != complex. There's some really good heroes in DoTA (Ogre Magi: not one of them), but there's also a shitton of totally bland right clickers with way too many passives and no skill shots.

You fell for his trap card so hard.

He's not. It's just that the average dota hero is ten times more interesting than the best riot designs.

Of the 100+ heroes that are available...we're focusing like a laser on Skeleton King because why? Did someone suppose he is a "master work"?

actually, interesting hero designs are the main reasons why i play LoL

lee sin, jarvan 4th, orianna, draven, etc etc are some really cool designs

(favorite dota heroes are invoker, rude dick, beastmaster, storm spirit, batrider)

lazor, pls you guys are making me look bad

a lesson for everybody because i know this shit is just about to explode
thematic design preference is SUBJECTIVE
mechanical complexity is OBJECTIVE, and dota has a higher top end of complexity

Same reason the LoL focus cherry picks things.

It's dumb for both sides, to be honest.

All I have to say so far from my DotA2 experience is Windrunner's laugh is infectious and Storm Spirit may have the best lines to ever exist in games.

PUDDIN' POP.

Look. Absolutely no one denies that Skeleton King is anything other than a right click hero who has a pretty simple playstyle even with item actives.

The thing is, and I want to stress this fact, is that sometimes people want to hop into a brain and shut their brain off and rightclick shit to death (*Roleplaying the KING OF BONES in allchat optional), and they can do that. And the next day they're more on their game and want to do some GLORIOUS INVOCATION and guess what? They can do that too!

Ain't that keen?

league champs are right up your alley

Whoosh.

No need to be defensive. I'm glad League of Legends players have a lot of people to play with, that will hopefully sustain the game so they can enjoy it for years to come. It's just way too inelegant for me.

hey guys, how about that 5 mill concurrent!

F2P is the future!
esports!

gaming becoming accepted in society!

we're all in this together why all this hate comon guys pls

I'm not. He's the worst, but look at him Sven, and Dragon Knight. How many right clickers with a bunch of passives and a non-skillshot stun does the game need? And Alchemist, Chaos Knight, those guys are more interesting variations on that kit but the fact that there are already so many other variation detracts from them. Ursa zzzz. Or Drow Ranger and Viper. Soporific.

We dump a lot of it into eSports. Also, like most evolving games, the majority of development is on unannounced features.

you guys should bring back journal of justice or ionia vs noxus type events

...i really liked the lore from back in the day :3

did you read quinn's journal on frejlord? I think theyre bringing back lore

they need to put it on the front page similar to how they used to update JoJ back in the day. there's a lot of players that miss out on the hype because they don't browse LoL GD or the news collecting fan sites

Oh absolutely. And I still love their current franchises (still play WoW, enjoyed Diablo III, love Starcraft II) but it's a little surprising to me in hindsight that they didn't try to jump in with a MOBA years ago.

Indeed. DOTA had a lot of popularity before it was even made to a proper game, you'd think that would been an indication.

Lore is coming back in a big way. In fact, the entire company just had a mandatory meeting about it. We've got so many people at the Santa Monica office now that we have to hold these things at a large movie theatre :P

MOBA is the biggest success of Riots propoganda department
I think we're sticking to that "just cuz". I don't like the term myself. I don't like action RTS either--Dawn of War is an action RTS. I like RPRTS... role-playing RTS... but that's rather unwieldy.

I think the way champion reveals are slowly ramped up recently with Zac/Quinn is a great move. Considering the Howling Abyss reveal, I suspect we will get more like that in the future.

Unrelated to lore, but I really enjoy the current Twisted Treelines as well, I have almost completely moved away from SR due to how much more fun I consider 3v3. I understand you are in charge of that, so great job!

Thanks :)

Baller King only need his fire balls and mighty sword crits to kill peasants. Bow in front of the king.
It's funny, when SK started getting popular in DotA 1 competitive play for the first time (ever), a lot of people tried to argue that he was one of the most skilled heroes in the game due to increased need for timing and mana management on that sole "crutch". There's some truth to it; obviously when resources are more scarce, decisions matter more. But yeah, he's still just a right-clicker. I don't really see anything wrong with that though; a lot of the champions I designed in HoN had a heavy focus on passive abilities. A lot of people enjoy that--me included obviously.

That's not the issue. You could buy Dota 2 for next to nothing right now if you wanted

http://steamcommunity.com/market/listings/753/Dota 2

It is an issue because that one extra step of buying an invite for $0.02 is more than enough of an obstacle for the more casual crowd, the people who would make up the majority of the player base, to not get into the game.

That and the marketing won't go into full gear until the game is released.

it's not like there's any chance in hell of Dota 2 going to LoL numbers. It's just late too the party, not the mention less accessible.

This thread is pretty much exactly what I expected.

I'm glad to see League still showing signs of growth. This year is going to wind up being pretty big for the game with the new features that are being implemented.

Dota2 is a better game in almost every way possible than League of Legends. The only thing League has going for it is its ranking system and its hook (winning games - getting points - unlocking shit).

It has -

Worse art direction
Worse graphics
Worse sound/sound effects/limited sound clips
Worse Hero Variety
Worse Meta (which will never change)
Worse strategic options in matches (No tp supporting/ganking as long as wards are up)
Worse Competitive Scene (there are about 15 competitive heroes in League as of right now)
Worse hero balance (you can straight counter pick enemy heroes at top/mid/jungle lanes)

With that last one; Sure there are bad matchups in dota2 as well but League puts an emphasis on getting gold over levels which means a bad matchup in League is REALLY bad. A bad matchup in Dota2 can be overcome by skill/ganking/tp support with your extra levels.

But you know - congrats on 5 mil concurrent.
