League of Legends hits 5 million peak concurrent players.

Dota 2's default announcer is female. Megakills isn't though.

Largely because it's a mashup of Unreal Tournament 1 and Unreal Tournament 2003 announcers (with the exception of the Team Wipeout, which they completely forgot to reverb the hell out of).

Is this a poor man's version of unreal v quake chat?

Glad it's doing so well, means other games will have to do more entice people to play them.

Prefer dota 2 by a considerable stretch; those crying about Lol's is brilliant to see.

I honestly never understand these arguments. I prefer LoL but I've played nothing but DotA2 recently as a nice chance of pace. It's a fun game. They're both enjoyable for different reasons to me.

Of course, that DotA2 reason right now is Storm Spirit and Force Staff but still.

I still think Riot sucks in many ways, got a bit better in some other ways. The game they made is quite good though. Especially recently copying Dota 2's recommended item list layout and the more detailed pinging system, made the game way more playable to me. Now I'm getting into it in between Dota 2 sessions. I didn't used to like the game very much before I think.
Dota 2 "copied" HoN's, which I designed, and I work for Riot now... sooooooooooo~

Good stuff. I really prefer HoN to Dota 2 in almost every single facet.

Although I'm not sure I can ever forgive you for designing Emerald Warden.

It's not like copying is a bad thing anyways, that's why my post was praise for LoL and not criticism. Competition is good, both sides should just copy all the good shit the other side have and get two better games for it.

Judging purely by twitch streams it seems like LoL is far more popular with female players than Dota 2. Sure it's anecdotal, but it does seem to point to LoL probably being more popular with females. Anyone have a solid opinion on why that would be?

Because it's easier to play

The core of his post is still true though.
i dont think you can distill a non venomous core

im glad team dota defused that one though

freakin chair just sucks at league
Not with those pro casters you aren't.
to be fair, sc2 killed itself
Because it's easier to play
i think its because theres more pretty girls and teemo
my girlfriend refuses to play dudes or monsters
clearly all girls are the same

I've played the game but I just cannot get into it, I find it too confusing and the community to assholish for me to enjoy it, still know lots of people who play it

these games are best to learn with friends + a guiding hand

ask your buds to help you out, those assholes

I certainly wish DoTA 2 was less obtuse. I remember I was chatting with some DoTA 2 players about that shit. Not one of us could correctly explain every damage type in the game and the differences between them off the top of our heads, neither could anyone correctly explain how to tell what effects would or would not be stopped by BKB.

a lot of awkwardness comes from its wc3 engine heritige. they're just focused on porting the game 1:1 for now - when dota2 becomes the flagship dota game, im sure they'll work on making the game more consistent

Is Kiunch your girlfriend?

kiunch plays nasus

But then the awkwardness is already ingrained in the mechanics... I wish they were actually doing a sequel, but it's a straight identical port with shinier graphics. That also bugs me.

All I wanna know is where da black champions that don't look like they're fresh out the jungle at, Riot??? Nome?

And fuck alt skins, I mean someone original. Dota2 has like 3 or 4 chocolate heroes. Step your game up, LoL.

what does this mean

im glad we are having our bi-montly MOBA meetup in this thread
we have such happy times when both our communities come together

where the SMITEgaffers at?

Ashe is more interesting than Drow game play wise to be honest.

There are some hot chicks in Dota 2 as well but the ratio is smaller.

Not if you enjoy silencing. Outside of one move they share very little else in common at this point in time.

I would guess: nowhere near to LoL.

There were a lot of headlines on gaming sites some time ago about CoD having 3 million concurrent users, but then it turned out that it wasn't true and those were actually unique daily accesses to the servers.

This is the primary problem with F2P on consoles.

The F2P model in its most successful forms thus far has gotten very, very low average revenue from each individual player. There is the occasional "whale" (the term for someone who spends hundreds or thousands of dollars on items), but the last I'd heard Riot's average revenue per player was about 5 dollars because there are so many freeloaders and people who try it once or twice then quit. Further, there is no need to spend money in LoL or (especially) in DotA 2, or any of the other very newest wave of F2P which are even less restrictive than LoL.

A model like that only works on very large install bases, and the PS3/360 simply don't have that. Keep in mind that "large install base" is relative here; compared to billions of PCs, the consoles have not sold much. And you really do need hundreds of millions of potential users to make a $5 average per customer viable for a massive hit like LoL or DotA.

I'm not saying it's literally impossible to get F2P to work on consoles. It can. But 1) the business model doesn't fit consoles quite as well as it does PC or iOS which have vastly larger install bases, and 2) if they do get it to work, they'll need to have a larger number of "whales" so that their average revenue from each player is higher.

Is there no reporting system in LoL?

there is, but it's pretty worthless.

You report one guy for intentionally feeding and in the next game you get another one doing the same.

Atleast one of the following happens in every ranked game I play:

- Bot lane feeds hard. Bot lane leave the game.

-Mid laner see's the other mid laner leave the lane. Doesn't follow after him. Calls others, noobs when they die. Complain they fed his laner. Leaves the game.

- Top laner asks for top. Pick twitch vs a renekton. Dies two times. Leaves.

- Team insist on not warding and focusing the enemy tanks while letting a Caitlyn with 13/4, go wild on them.

- Mid laner complains that I got three kills in three ganks and refuses to participate in every team fight.

Atleast one of these happens in every game I play on ranked. In every single one.

I despise a lot of things about LoL but they do deserve the respect for being so successful.

I despise the whole "we add a new champion every 2-3 weeks", I despise the prices on these champions, I despise how Riot never lets the community figure things out and just "balance" things every few weeks.

Like you can't have a month without balance changes. Nope, things get changed every 1-2 weeks.

your comments imply that the report system should work immediately on a person, and it should punish people immediately for one bad/toxic game

just sounds like youre just playing with bad people

ouuuuuuuu

gonna have to buy her at some point soon. Is she any good, though? Haven't seen her run on any streams and I haven't played LoL in awhile. also, where da chocolate men.
shes not out yet, sorry DV
soon though!

taric is like, totally black inside

I pontificate far too often. To sum up my previous post: the strategy behind F2P games is to drill a very wide hole (i.e. tons of users), but a very shallow one (i.e. each of those users spends very little on average). By contrast, the strategy behind consoles is to make a comparatively narrow hole (i.e. consoles have a vastly smaller install base than PC/iOS) but to make that hole very deep (i.e. each console user spends lots of money).

You can see why I think the F2P model isn't especially well suited to consoles. I suspect some will make it work -- it won't be without its success stories -- but the model is much better suited to the platforms it's already functioning on.

no, not that. It's just that intentionally feeding is not nearly as punishable as for example, calling someone a "noob".

Not to mention how borderline disgusting, the LOL community is.

You go on the forums to ask about a solution to this because it's not fair how you constantly win your lane, roam to help others, ward even though you're not the support, have the highest farm, take down the most objectives in every game, only to find people who don't care if they win or not and have atleast 12 people jump immediatly on you saying you deserve to be on that elo/lp because you can't carry a team with no tanks, no cc and that just doesn't want to win.

well i would find it odd if youre doing so well + doing all the right things that youre still at low elo
maybe you should work on game impact, but lets take that to the league thread

I mentioned this before but I would really like to see the revenue for lol. No doubt it must be great, but just for perspective with other business models (wow).

I think there was an interview/statistic that said only about 1% of users actually spend money.
