Looks great... and boring.

I couldn't help but wish that I was watchig some other type of game with these visuals, really impressive stuff there.

Oh. Well i don't know, i haven't seen any articles from a QA session. Are there any? One scenario could be that DICE shows up at E3 with BF4 at the Sony presser and announcing it then.

DICE has refused to confirm whether or not Battlefield 4 will release on PlayStation 4 or Microsoft's next-gen Xbox.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com last night, creative director Lars Gustavsson said that he "cannot" confirm DICE's next-gen plans for Battlefield 4, despite the reveal of the studio"s new high-end engine Frostbite 3.

"It's more [because] here, right now, we want the focus to be on the single-player demo," Gustavsson replied, when we asked why the developer couldn’t confirm whether Battlefield 4 is heading to next-gen platforms.

"When we built this engine, I think we already felt when we did Battlefield 3 with Frostbite 2 that it was kind of a power horse. It had enormous potential. We talked then about next-generation technology on the current generation of platforms, and I still have that feeling that we've done so many tech improvements in that engine that are, in many ways, just making things look more beautiful for a cheaper cost."

Despite DICE's official line, however, Frostbite 3's senior development director Carl Almgren appeared to drop hints at a next-gen release during a separate discussion detailing the new engine.

"We wanted to take full use of the existing consoles," said Almgren, discussing the reasons behind developing Frostbite 3, "but even more important[ly] higher multi-core PC platforms. Since 2011 we firmly believed that this would be the base for all future platforms."

Battlefield 4 is currently confirmed for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Visually it looks great and I like the returned focus on destruction, but I have yet to see anything that shows me why battlefield 4 needed to come out so close to battlefield 3. Show me you're more than just a battlefield factory, DICE.

Just woke up.

Watching the 17 min footage. on the 5 min mark now.

Few things:

OMAR IS COMING Yo.

Shawshank reference.

Liking what I see.

What I presume I missed:

Why SP?

Looks Awesome.

Looks like shit.

Look at those ugly textures.

I expected better graphics.

It looks amazing, the SP could be a nice addition for the MP if they do it right

still not showing next-gen consoles. It's supposed to be this way, right?

The Hardware Partner should give us a hint:

It looks great.

BF3 also looked great but the campaign was the most inane drivel imaginable. Dumb forgettable story and characters, disappointing on rails jet section, shooting Russians again, completely absurd ending. Don't really care how good a game looks if the characters and story are not engaging or the gameplay is not pushing the medium forward.

Technically BF4 seems better and goes into more details, but KZ4 has a distinctive artstyle which helps a lot.
But we are judging unfinished games right now, so who knows.

imo Killzone had a better showing. Far more colour than this, bleh. Besides how can you see such details when DICE is addicted to bloom?

Does it look better than BF3? I'm not sure I see a leap but it looks good for sure.
Not sure it tops Crysis 3 which has a more "comics" artstyle making it seem less realistic.

hyperbole ohoy!

I am sorry that a genre you don't like is so popular that publishers throw lots of money at development.

Genre? Where have I ever said that FPS is a genre I don't like? I am talking about improving and innovating already existing characteristics of the military FPS. Why not do something new from a design perspective? Why not create new interesting scenarios for the player to engage in? Why settle for what has alteady been done so, so many times in the last 10 years.

I fail to see what is so wrong in asking for new and creative experiences while holding developers accountable for the derivative multimillion blockbuster games they put out.

There are games like ARMA that do that, sadly not enough developers take the risk. I can't fault DICE for making a spectacle, as less interested in the SP I am with this.

Maybe we just differ in when game developers are excused from being criticized for their creative ambitions. I mean, you have hundreds of people dedicating years of their mortal life on creating this digital experience, yet not much thought and effort are put into making something new. Why not try out an interesting scenario for the player to engage in? Why not deliver something meaningful for the player e.g. through a tough war dilemma or taking advantage of the multitudes of player agency in approaching a combat scenario? Why settle for the same stuff we've already seen a million times before? Large budgets may entail risk aversion, but that doesn't excuse the lack of creativity.

What in the fuck did I just watch? First of all: an SP demo for a MP game? The fuck you thinking DICE?

Second: not much seems to have changed at all. The animations are the same, so is the soldier design and the overall feel of the game. It's got the same design, same colours, same music even.

And that new grenade launcher is going to fuck up MP games. It's going to be the new pre-patch USAS and I foresee a ban on almost all servers.

The only genuinly new thing seems to be that sight set at 45 degrees.

As I thought, BF4 ist just BF3.5 and it's too early. I'm quite disappointed for now. There wasn't much hype to begin with, I was expecting this sort of thing.

PS Do american solidiers generally use Russian weapons? He gave that guy a MP412 REX.

Is this developed by DICE for campaign too? Trailer gives me a CLEAR MoHW vibe and Car chase escape is DEFINITELY being made by Criterion. Maybe BF3 is actually the game EALA was helping develop, and not BF BC3?
Of all the things to do, giving the SP "the MoH Warfighter treatment" wasn't exactly on my top list. Not that I expected much, given the garbage SP was for Battlefield 3, but still...

Looks AMAZING but gameplay is unfortunately CODish (much like BF3's then). I cannot believe anybody would hate on the graphics, I suppose we've seen everything the engine has to show by watching a hi-def Youtube video, eh? smh

Def day one for me, for the multiplayer, of course.

That's the best looking thing ive ever seen in my life. Im incredibly impressed. I skipped BF3 but i will NOT skip this. Even the way the wind moves the banners on the buildings or the explosion with the helicopter fire or the running through the corridoor while being shot it. Just incredible.

I think I'm missing what everyone else is seeing.

I saw a lot of low-res textures and what looks to be the same engine powering BF3. It didn't more impressive than BF3 visually. Frostbite 3? Wha.... what changed?

I'll probably completely ignore the single player for this game anyways, so I'm really just waiting to see if they're innovating in the multiplayer arena....

Liking what I see.

Looks Awesome.
What looked awesome? I think it looked more of the same from BF3?

Looks like shit.

Look at those ugly textures.

I expected better graphics.
I agree. And why did you expect better? Behind the scenes, Frostbite 2 was never actually all that powerful. They're using a lot of tricks to simulate nice effects and color grading for "realism." I didn't expect a game changer from this one at all. And from the looks of things, it won't be.

After finally seeing the whole thing, I'm pretty worried about next gen.

That trailer is the very definition of diminishing returns. Sony and MS are going to have a tough time selling consoles if their flagship titles only look as good as this.

Eh, another battlefield presented with single player gameplay only.

Guess I should keep my expectations in the very low.

And lol 'Frostbite 3'.

What did you expect, round based strategy from a Battlefield game?

They obviously just mean their bored of FPS; no need to get ratty. The genre needs to expand imo; we've seen thay with FC3, and Borderlands.

Can understand being tired from it. Am sure everyone can relate.

I stopped watching once the shooting began. This shit ain't in me no more. None of it.
Same....
What did you expect, round based strategy from a Battlefield game?
The direction they took their single player in is... boring, honestly. I don't care for this "human, emotional" single player stuff. They're never going to pull it off convincingly to me.

If they showed a single player trailer for Bad Company 3, I'd be ALL KINDS of excited. At least in that series, they have establish characters with quite a bit of development now, as well as great dialog and humor. I'd love to play through another of those.

Perhaps something more than a strictly linear version of this:

I like FPS games. I even like the idea of a modern FPS with all them modern guns and all. But the shooting gallery stuff has run its course for me.

Edit: fixed image.

I don't see how anyone can see this as boring. Are like 99% of games and movies boring to you too? How can they fix it? Oh I know they should set off a nuke filled with kittens.

There are plenty of shooters that put BF and CoD to shame. Acting as if there's no answer to these horribly generic scripted campaigns isn't right. They need to either make a MP only game and outsource CGI work for promotional material, or actually give a fuck. Either one is fine.

I'm still shocked that MoH: Warfighter got so much heat for their campaign when BF3 wasn't any different. If the MP wasn't fucking amazing, they would get the criticism they deserve from critics and eventually accept they suck at anything story driven.

You are aware that this is a cross-gen title, right?

That was freakin boring. It looked like Battlefield 3 with some better graphics.
Next-gen is going to be the exact same shit as current-gen, isn't it?
Shit.

So what looks better than this? Comparisons have been made to the new Killzone, but the BF4 vid has an insane amount of debris flying around...everywhere when shit gets hairy and there's a lot more environmental detail too

Graphically it looks like a nice evolution of BF3 and Frostbite. I'm sure the SP will be trite shit, but Battlefield has never been about SP. I hope there are solid improvements to the MP and that they keep the tradition of open environments and large scale battles alive instead of CoD-ifying it more.
