This is really cool and suits those cartoons in the article. But I still disagree that it is appropriate with 167 and its content. The article Whats That Crazy Drawing, or How I Came To Know and Love Animation Smears and the blog Smears, Multiples and Other Animation Gimmicks must be a good step to try to understand
10 years ago we had Wnd waker and XIII, they still look great, especially on emulators but now we have Ninokuni and Naruto UNS3, they are a massive improvement over what was possible a decade ago. Cel shaded games have never been this close in resembling real hand drawn animation. Will next gen power finally make it possible to play real cartoons and anime?
Imagine a game like this:

lol, what the fuck is "true" animationTo be
As far as rank and file anime go, I agree that most of them don't really have much "true" animation at all compared to animation from western countries and that they "cheat" in order to put just enough movement onscreen to make it look like animation. Even big budget films like Akira have done this. It's gotten to the point where on the rare occasion I see an anime that has unusually fluid animation (like some of the scenes from FLAG), it doesn't really look like anime anymore.
Ultimate Ninja Storm looks better than the show.

I can't wait for next-gen to give us in-game animation like this
both those gifs are animated by Yutaka nakamura, one of the greatest animators ever yo. you aren't gonna find much animation in any medium look as good as his frames.dude Anime is more than Naruto. (even more than Bebop)
and how can you say what the evolution of Windwaker and Naruto's cel shading graphics look like when it hasn't happened yet?

Think of Naruto or Wind Waker as Metal Gear Solid 3. I want to see MGSV level cel shading.
I want some advancements
EDIT: When I say get more complex with the characters, I'm talking the style of the characters.
Games like Windwaker and the simple plain style of Naruto lends itself fairly well to cel shading as it exists today.
Styles like Cowboy Bebop or Ninja Scroll where the characters are more proportional are alot harder to do
I atleast want to get something in between with the PS4

Japan ladies and gentlemen!

All animation is true. Efficiency should be commended.
OP gets props for Ippo Love

Rolling GOOOOOO!
Funny... I didn't even see this thread. I'm on my like... 5th time rewatching Ippo and it NEVER gets old. It's definitely up there on my favorite anime list.
I'm definitely curious to see if Namco Bandai would ever return to making a .Hack console game with maybe cell shading or something. I'd give anything to see what they could pull off with that and the next gen of cell shading... if there is one.

I actually wouldn't mind the next F-Zero to look like this
It's not very often that I am impressed, but these are in-game... WOW!
Thats not the same fight. No where close to how good the fight looked in anime:

Wind Waker is still the most impressive example of cartoonish graphics. I really hope that aesthetic is further explored. Simple cel-shading is not enough though, you need the whole package of animation, texturing, lighting and modelling.
Redline was great. Reminded me of F-Zero so much, but I dream about how amazing and unique a Redline game would be if pulled off just right.
I always thought Wind Waker is overrated in terms of praise for it's cel-shaded graphics...most of it is pretty bland and simple, in comparision to many other cel-shading games. The only areas that look above average are the first couple of dungeons, hyrule castle, forsaken forest and forest haven.
And yet that's the only game in ages that gave me the feeling i was looking at enemies having their own life and not being videogames puppets.
Two games precisely gave me that shock feeling.
_Xmen children of the atom
_Wind Waker
It's all about animations.
Always wanted a game like this. Would like to see a dev try.

It's almost perfectly consistent in its style. Something that is close to impossible to achieve in a game as big. Hence the "simple" assets. It's a perfect visual realisation of a graphical style and those are very rare.
I still get blown away by it after all these years.
