Next gen cel shading: will games finally look like cartoons/anime?

10 years ago we had Wnd waker and XIII, they still look great, especially on emulators but now we have Ninokuni and Naruto UNS3, they are a massive improvement over what was possible a decade ago. Cel shaded games have never been this close in resembling real hand drawn animation. Will next gen power finally make it possible to play real cartoons and anime?

Imagine a game like this:

Always wanted a game like this. Would like to see a dev try.

To be

As far as rank and file anime go, I agree that most of them don't really have much "true" animation at all compared to animation from western countries and that they "cheat" in order to put just enough movement onscreen to make it look like animation. Even big budget films like Akira have done this. It's gotten to the point where on the rare occasion I see an anime that has unusually fluid animation (like some of the scenes from FLAG), it doesn't really look like anime anymore.
lol, what the fuck is "true" animation

All animation is true. Efficiency should be commended.

I can't wait for next-gen to give us in-game animation like this

I dont know if that is sarcasm but i watched those episodes and i thought the animations were at their best then. The distortion in the image, i think was meant to represent the scale and power of the battle and was successful doing so in my opinion. Also i dont think the OP is looking for cell shaded games but a real anime cartoon look.

Agh, this thread reminds me of the now non-existant Storm 3 PC announcement :(. It's impressive on consoles, imagine 1080p + AA D:

dude Anime is more than Naruto. (even more than Bebop)

and how can you say what the evolution of Windwaker and Naruto's cel shading graphics look like when it hasn't happened yet?

Think of Naruto or Wind Waker as Metal Gear Solid 3. I want to see MGSV level cel shading.

I want some advancements

EDIT: When I say get more complex with the characters, I'm talking the style of the characters.

Games like Windwaker and the simple plain style of Naruto lends itself fairly well to cel shading as it exists today.
Styles like Cowboy Bebop or Ninja Scroll where the characters are more proportional are alot harder to do

I atleast want to get something in between with the PS4

both those gifs are animated by Yutaka nakamura, one of the greatest animators ever yo. you aren't gonna find much animation in any medium look as good as his frames.

Quoted for truth.

I had a teacher Who hated anime, because of "lol, western Animation has more fluid motion, anime's not a valid art style, elite." You can't preach art and diss art.

Someone tell me who animated Gintoki and Jirocho vs. 50 elite warriors in the Four Devas arc in Gintama.

Or pretty much every major Gintama fight.

Gods.

Funny... I didn't even see this thread. I'm on my like... 5th time rewatching Ippo and it NEVER gets old. It's definitely up there on my favorite anime list.

I'm definitely curious to see if Namco Bandai would ever return to making a .Hack console game with maybe cell shading or something. I'd give anything to see what they could pull off with that and the next gen of cell shading... if there is one.

When your done the only ippo fix you can get will be the manga.

But at least the story continues on...

Been thinking on and off about this for a long time. Cel shaded games are a ways off from reproducing an authentic animation look and are nowhere near delivering a Production IG or Madhouse Studio level experience. I honestly can't think of any high quality animation from the 80s and up that does not far surpass what cel shading does now in games. It is all still too CG looking. Oh, and I am not comparing cel shaded to cheap low quality series like Naruto, I am comparing it to the likes of Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Redline, Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop and so on. I am hopeful that next gen we will see vast improvement in this area because as far as I am concerned, most cel-shaded games look horrible right now.

Next F-Zero to look like this?

I actually wouldn't mind the next F-Zero to look like this

Redline was great. Reminded me of F-Zero so much, but I dream about how amazing and unique a Redline game would be if pulled off just right.

...i want a game where the gameplay is very much like a cutscenes ..those naruto ultimate ninja storm 3 gifs, ..are just cutscenes with QTEs ...not really gameplay .>.> ...T_T the actual gameplay looks alright ..but nothing close as amazing as those cut scenes

same with Ni no kuni ..i really wish the game had a over the shoulder camera in those pics, but nope its top down ..which shows the limitations they had ..hopefully next gen can provide a anime ish cutscene level gameplay ..

i want anime style open world game darn it not a jrpg or fighter

The reason why Cowboy bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell all look so good is due to their animations and camera angles. The cell shade should not be to hard for developers to mimic but those animations are something else.

I think it can be achieved with PS4 and CC2. Naruto, as pointed out in this thread, already looks like the anime and even better, the problem is the aliasing and its jaggies. If they can achieve fine black lines then I think we reached our goal.

As others have said, cel shading will never be able to match the look of 2D animation.

Honestly? That's perfectly fine. What should be done is approximate the style of 2D while leveraging the specific advantages 3D has over 2D material to create an impressive product. We have a brand new console generation coming up, so all we need is more developers willing to invest in developing the aesthetic further.

Wind Waker is still the most impressive example of cartoonish graphics. I really hope that aesthetic is further explored. Simple cel-shading is not enough though, you need the whole package of animation, texturing, lighting and modelling.

It's not very often that I am impressed, but these are in-game... WOW!

i was impressed too until i watched the youtube video. everything looks better in small gifs. it's still pretty good in terms of cell shading but a ways off looking like proper animation.

I sure hope so, I mean obviously it can't look exactly as awesome (especially in action oriented games) because it still has to be playable but I hope we're getting there

I always thought Wind Waker is overrated in terms of praise for it's cel-shaded graphics...most of it is pretty bland and simple, in comparision to many other cel-shading games. The only areas that look above average are the first couple of dungeons, hyrule castle, forsaken forest and forest haven.

And yet that's the only game in ages that gave me the feeling i was looking at enemies having their own life and not being videogames puppets.

Two games precisely gave me that shock feeling.
_Xmen children of the atom
_Wind Waker

It's all about animations.

I highly disagree there have been so many games this generation that top-tier lively animation.

Personally I prefer that CGI cross anime style you get from stuff like Appleseed and Ghost in a Shell.

Games like Blue Dragon and Ni no Kuni look amazing, can't wait to see what devs do with next gen hardware.

It's almost perfectly consistent in its style. Something that is close to impossible to achieve in a game as big. Hence the "simple" assets. It's a perfect visual realisation of a graphical style and those are very rare.

I still get blown away by it after all these years.

Hm, well, I just don't think it's anything that special. Skward Sword actually looks better for the most part I think...

For a game to really look and feel like an anime, it would have to run at like 10 fps, and man, that would be awful to play. Ni no Kuni looks amazing, and pretty close to an anime in screens, but once you play it that illusion is shattered by the smooth gameplay. And I don't really see how you get around that. So while next-gen games will probably look even closer to the real thing in screens, they still won't feel like it in motion.

Way too much Naruto in this thread.

Not enough Jojo. Some great things happening in the new game

Although as awful as Naruto is, its a testament to how good those PS3 games are that even I want to play them.
