Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

I had a guy who works at gamestop (not a low level employee) say that he wasn't sure if the nextbox is going to be released this year even, after that gamestop meeting event they had this year. He said the information was presented in a way that made him believe only one console will be launching this year

I didn't talk about it here since I thought it would be total bs. I still don't believe it but thought I will mention it here. I still personally expect a launch this year...would be crazy if they don't

How could Microsoft get so cocky, though? They could potentially end up doing the complete opposite of what made the 360 successful. Early launch, reasonable price, attractive to developers, etc..

Another person with insider sources.

I believe you.

Partly because the guys who made Xbox what it is today are mostly gone now.

Yeah it makes no sense so I refuse to believe it. It's like the anti-360 launch

:P Come on man I never do these insider info stuff. This is just what I was told...even I don't believe it lol

The Dream Team (Robbie Bach, J Allard, and Peter Moore), gone forever. Miss you guys, and that dashboard.

I wonder if this is where Sony's hardware expertise is really going to pay off - launching PS4 in appreciable quantities, on time this fall, with reliable hardware that generally keeps cool.

Microsoft has always struggled with hardware design, sure they've gotten better, but sometimes when you have ambitious plans for a new console that includes BC and a SOC, you're going to be pushing the boundaries if the design isn't very elegant.

If the rumors are true, and Microsoft is having heating issues, that could potentially cause supply issues, which would force them to either delay or simply not have enough available to meet demand.

In which case, there would be a golden opportunity for Sony early on if they have rock solid hardware that is produced in appreciable quantities.

Well the CEO of Gamestop says only one console is likely to launch in 2013...and Sony was having their reveal months back...so...I don't think its that crazy.

Well he just expecting, but who knows, maybe PS4 is the one should be coming 2014,but then Sony changed their plan(i wonder why some people think Sony never change their plan btw)

Sony bought Zipper, Sucker Punch, Naught Dog, Guerilla and Media Molecule. That is fine but paying for one game is shameful.

Gears of War proves that 'no...it's not'.

Would be massively less costly and could bring awesome new ideas build dream teams beside buying other's dream to reveneau on top of it.

Since when are we pretending that all exclusives for any system are suddenly First party.

Sounds to me that Microsoft was shocked by Sonys reveal. They werent ready just yet for Next Gen and Sony forced their hand. Thats why Microsoft hasnt said or shown much at all, they simply arent ready...I would just hope Microsoft delays till Spring 2014 instead of launching a new system with no games.

People assumed Sony = 2014 for too long imo. They needed to go sooner and had most to gain. MS would be fine this holiday in the US with just 360.

Well if MS had bought or created more studios they probably wouldn't be having to rely on third party exclusives. Which is the point; owning your exclusives is better than moneyhatting them (generally).

People seriously believe this?

Games consoles aren't made in three months, dude. It takes years.

So, let's talk about the plausibility of a MS delay until early 2014.

Would they really launch ~6 months later, with weaker hardware, and miss out on a holiday season?

Sony launched much later with PS3 but they had more powerful hardware which helped offset the delay in the eyes of the early adopters (i.e. gamers).

I'm not really sure I could see MS doing it.

PS3 has the weaker gpu though.

Yeah that's why MS build a lot studios since 2010,and actually it make sense of "MS 6 months behind in game production for Durango"

"2011
Microsoft Studios opens new development studios in Soho London, Redmond, Washington and Victoria, British Columbia.

2012
Microsoft Studios recruits for new development studios in Redmond — Microsoft Studios - The Connected Experiences.
Microsoft Studios announces plans to expand Microsoft Studios Victoria to between 80-100 people.
Microsoft reveals plans to open a new games development studio in London, England to develop various free-to-play, online and social games for Xbox platforms.
Microsoft downsizes Microsoft Studios - Vancouver due to cancellation of Kinect family title "Project Columbia" and announces ongoing development of free-to-play PC title, Microsoft Flight has ceased due to portfolio evaluation.
Microsoft Studios Vancouver is officially renamed Black Tusk Studios. They aim to create Microsoft Studios' next big IP to rival their most successful series, Halo."

Most of new studios developing big titles for Durango a found at 2011 or 2012,even Black Tsuk found at 2010,but they seems did nothing about big titles before they renamed at 2012.
So they still need old studios for first wave of Durango first party games, but yeah they don't have much old studios

Hope Microsoft gets it on track. I don't want a drought like I've seen on Wii U, not to mention I want the sales of all next gen consoles to be healthy, for a healthy industry, and behind on software is one thing that could cause lower than anticipated sales.

Not really, actually PS3 do better(a little at least) than 360 right now,and PS3 released at 2006,360 released at 2005,so it's not really too long for Sony,at least not longer than MS

lol at people actually suggesting MS wait till next year... because that late launch really helped the PS3 last go-around!

This seems fishy to me...

What sort of person would have information on the status of the complete portfolios of both MS and Sony? No third-party devs or publishers are privy to this information, they are only aware of the games they are working on, and just given knowledge of how to work on the platforms. Only the higher-ups at MS or Sony would know whether their portfolios are ahead/behind, and unless these higher-ups between MS and Sony are sharing notes, which is unlikely, I'm not so sure this could be trusted.

Plus, who the hell cares as long as there is a great launch, and post-launch portfolio? Maybe they wanted 30 games for the launch and can now only get 20. Or maybe some of the games they are working on just weren't fun.

There's just so many variables here, that it's not worth getting up in arms about until after E3 when we know exactly what the launches are going to look like.

Maybe first party devs from each console are friends? They hang out, have drinks, you know, do things friends do and they talk about their jobs...One of them spills the beans then BOOM we have a Kotaku rumor..

All these devs run in the same circles so I dont find it difficult to believe they share some of their opinions about their development process...

I am a teacher and have friends that teach at different school corporations than I do...I know all types of stories and dirt about their schools as they do about mine....We are friends and we talk about our jobs...

Wut? No games? Not ready? Sonys event shocked them?

Neogaf, you've lost your collective minds.

The fuck? Sony didn't just buy those companies out of nowhere, pulling the rug out from under them, they'd all been working exclusively for Sony for years beforehand. So yes, 100% perfectly fine.

Not that I think there's anything inherently wrong with moneyhatting third party exclusives.

Man I love J Allard.
What magazine had a feature article on the 360 where he is laying down hovering with his arms outstretched?

I must have read that thing back to front a hundred times.

Yeah Gears was a great strategy for MS.

Was it TIME? I remember reading that issue all the in the spring/summer of 2005.

The one picture that sticks out in my head is the one of Bill and J playing a game on the 360 together.

EDIT: Looks like it was Wired. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.06/xbox.html

no way in hell will MS wait a year. They would rather have a shitty first year then to miss holidays with Sony on the market.

They may just not have PS4 devkits yet since they've been finishing Fuse. Might as well wait for the final ones in a couple months if you're still working on current gen projects.
They are working on a next-gen project, though, and the person who leaked it scrubbed evidence. It would be weird to pretend a generic "Unannounced Next-Gen title" does not exist, unless companies are not allowed to publicly acknowledge a certain platform's existence. The title comes out next year, I believe.

I'm sure Insomniac NC will keep on churning out Ratchet games though.

Sounds like Durango will have a good 2nd and 3rd year then. Microsoft will just need to buy a few 3rd party exclusives for the first year to hold them over.

I wouldn't be so confident that those studios will lead to the Durango having a good 2nd or 3rd year. Building large studios up from scratch is a pretty huge feat. Even some of the best efforts (like 343 and Eidos Montreal) can easily turn into an absolute mess.

One thing I can say is, internally Microsoft was unphased by the Sony event. In fact, it reinforced whatever vision they had. Once again, grains of salt etc.

MS isn't reactionary. They tend to do whatever the hell they're set on no matter what the market is doing.

Which is probably why Windows Phone is doing so poorly.
