[RUMOR] PlayStation Reportedly Set To Launch PC Ports 6 Months After Release Moving Forward

Game production costs are rising every year, production processes are getting longer, and port times could be six years instead of six months. Who knows? There are still games that haven't been ported to the PC platform.

It is extremely unlikely that any PC equipped with a GPU faster than a 3060/4060/etc... will not have at least 16GB of RAM or a 6 core CPU. And the far majority of 6 core CPUs would be Zen 2 or 10th gen Intel or higher, simply for the fact that before those generations 6 core CPUs were extremely rare, and Zen 1 never sold all that well.

Yes the display is obvious, but the exact same goes for any console player, if they are stuck on a 1080p monitor or lack HDR they will have none of those things. Hell, we have several people here that play on 1080p plasma sets as they prefer the image plasma provides.

GPUs are indeed that number, I picked 2070 Super/3060/4060/5060 and 6700/7600/9060XT and up for GPUs. Sure, some of the Nvidia 8GB GPUs struggle with textures in some more recent games, but on the other hand they have significantly better RT capabilities and DLSS.

I just pulled the numbers into a spreadsheet, but I see Zathalus Zathalus already covered it
I said GPUs more powerful than the ones in current gen consoles, meaning should be above RX 6700 / RTX 2070 Super / RTX 3060 Ti. So cards like 3060, 3060 Ti or 2070 should be removed from the list, which drops the percentage maybe around 9%.

But independently of the exact percentage yes, obviously in a year or two since I checked it the percentage must have increased, but the majority of Steam players don't have a GPU more powerful than a current gen console.

And this is just one of the multiple possible bottlenecks that may prevent them from achieving enjoying a better performance/experience. There's also the CPU, RAM, VRAM etc, some of them covered in other Steam Hardware Survey stuff I mentioned.

Game production costs are rising every year, production processes are getting longer, and port times could be six years instead of six months. Who knows? There are still games that haven't been ported to the PC platform.
Well, as of today to make a new AAA game takes around 5-9 years. Including paperwork, certification etc nowadays a port of an already ported several times engine, or engine already ready for multiplatform (like Unity, UE, etc) just take a few months (the core work just a few weeks).

To port a game that uses a console only coded to the metal engine not ported to other platform before (case of the first port of ND/Insomniac/SSM engines) may take a up to over a year or maybe two depending on the case and the size of the porting team. Normally that porting team leaves an important amount of work done for future porting jobs with that engine, that heavily reduces the work needed on future games.

When companies like Sony release a game on PC 4 or 10 years later it isn't because to make the port took that long. It's because they strategically tought that was better to keep that distance.

Same goes with the games that aren't ported, companies may decide it's better to don't port them or at least not yet due to various reasons: some small teams because don't have enough money to port their game everywhere, some big 3rd parties because some console platform holder moneyhatted them to don't release their game in other console or PC at least during some time. Or companies like Sony because may think it's a better idea to keep some games exclusive forever, or to wait at least enough time before making the PC port, or maybe because they think the potential PC revenue of that specific game won't be enough (something rare, because we saw that even Sackboy is a profitable PC port).

Again if Sony will do this, then it will be the end of PS console and millions of fans will leave PS console environment. It will be pointless to buy a PS console especially Ps6 in the future. Just get a PC or upgrade your PC.

This is a big joke from Sony executives.

If this will be Sony's stupid strategy, then it is much more logical for Sony just launch there own PC.Revive or bring back Sony Vaio and launch it as a gaming PC. Stop making a PS console. :pie_roffles:

I dont think the majority of gamers will care. Sure the hardcore will just skip the PS and get a PC. But say that accounts for 3-4% - they will make that money and more easily by releasing on steam early

If this happens (and i think it will) - you can be sure Sony has done these calculations/predictions and feel that the impact is too small

.. of course Xbox made the calculations too and Xbox hardware died heh..

6 months ain't bad

Even funnier that people think those with nice gaming PCs are port begging this generations Sony games.

It's interesting that you have several PC channels, like Linus Tech, Hardware Unboxing, etc., all using at least one Sony game from this generation as a benchmark.

The norm is Spider-Man 2, Returnal, and R&C; not to mention the cross-gen ones.

The desperation is so great that they stole a partial port of Spider-Man 2 and spent almost a year working on the stolen data to get the game to "run" on PC, even though they knew the official port would come out at some point.

I won't even mention the desperation to emulate the Switch... They supported a company for years to do this.

But PC users aren't desperate for PlayStation or Nintendo games. Imagine if they were? A terrorist attack against Sony and Nintendo to demand PC ports? LOL

If strictly more powerful is your criteria, that only eliminates the 3060, 2070 Super, and RX 6750 GRE 10 GB. Which brings it down to 43.77%, hardly a small minority as you claimed. Certainly not the 3060 Ti which is about 20% faster than the PS5. Possible bottlenecks seems incredible unlikely, how many users that have a 4070 or 7700 XT will have less than 16GB of RAM or a 4 core CPU. Stuff like that is paired with those who still game on a 1060 or 580 from almost a decade ago.

Ashes of the Singularity was also included in PC benchmarks for a time, not because the game was popular, but it was a unique engine that did something different vs other games at the time. It would be a pretty useless benchmark suit if they just included UE5 games. Techpowerup for example has every single game from a different game engine, bar two UE5 titles.

Your point about Spider-Man 2 is also completely nonsensical, you think it was your average PC gamer that hacked Insomniac, stole the code, and then proceeded to reverse engineer it for shits and giggles? Or your point about Switch, how many people do you think actually emulate games on PC? Hint, its a tiny, tiny minority. Just because something is available on PC doesn't mean it is popular or even a significant driving force behind the platform.

"Steam has no games"

I'm sure there's a literal graveyard out there of "corporations that did the calculations" at various strategic moments.

I dont know what the future holds nor claim to, but I do know that Sony is mach speed toward emulating the same environment/policy/reasoning that I didn't buy a Series console.

If they don't care about hardware and walled garden - so be it, but I think this strategy and successful hardware marketshare are incongruous.

I've been arguing on the internet for 20 years, and the dumb guy is always the first to project his stupidity onto others.
And it's always the same thing: a sentence like "you're dumb."
Ad hominem is always used by people so dumb they think they're smart.

It's time to start reading, this link is a good start for you

No, the dumb guy is always the one posting a bunch of non-sequitur and thinking he's saying anything of substance. You claimed they care about those games because they use them in freakin' benchmarks lmao.

Legit, who gives a shit? What kind of logic is that? Your post was so incredibly stupid it didn't even deserve addressing. This is without a doubt one of the absolute stupidest statements I've seen on Gaf.

So the PC no longer has benchmark software and needs to use the Playstation's "tech demo that no one wants to play"? 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Everyone works for free on something that doesn't matter to them, that's why they reverse engineered spider2. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Yeah, so nothing to refute the sheer stupidity you claimed in the first place, and then you use fallacies incorrectly. Not surprising considering the hollow point you even tried making.

Benchmarking software aren't real games. Those channels have suites of up to 50 games and AAA games are tested. Sony games are AAA and they're tested. Not difficult, right?
Everyone works for free on something that doesn't matter to them, that's why they reverse engineered spider2. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Again, what's with the non-sequitur? A small team of guys got their hands on the leak and this somehow means PC gamers as a whole care for this game? The game came out. It did unimpressive CCUs on Steam and had bad reviews for weeks.

I can't tell if you're a troll or seriously that clueless.

Now that I'm thinking about this… what games? How can you port what you don't have? They remain exclusive by inaction. Are those Sony games with us in this room?

Well doesn't matter to me. Already sold my ps5 pros, canceled ps plus. I'm no longer contributing money to Sony, not just because of their direction but because they released 3 good for the ps5 since launch. What a waste.

Yeah if this strategy is real, it will be the first time I don't buy a Playstation and prioritize PC instead.

It mattered enough to you that you had to post about your financial regrets.

This is such an exaggeration. You really think a majority of the 80M+ PlayStation 5 owners will swap to PC and pay 3-5X as much for hardware? Most don't even want to buy the Pro because they think it's too expensive.

Nothing will happen. PlayStation will be fine. Even with day 1 ports.

What? No, Sony games don't make up the entire benchmark suit for most reviewers. If Sony games never got ported there are still dozens of other games that could be used, but since they are ported why wouldn't they be used? Whatever the opinion on the game itself, nobody can deny that the games don't do anything technically interesting. Do you also think the people doing the benchmarks are viewing the games through some weird fanboy lens? And who said nobody wants to play them? Most of the Sony games on PC have sold several million copies, sure they are not as popular as some of the other big titles on PC over the past few years, but they still sell pretty decently.

Everyone works for free on something that doesn't matter to them, that's why they reverse engineered spider2. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Those responsible for the hack and the group who is reverse engineering the game are obviously two different sets of people. The former were criminals who wanted to make money and the latter are software developers who likely wanted a challenge to overcome. Desperation or the desire to play the game hardly factored into it. The Spider-Man 2 hacked game was downloaded by a few thousand people according to torrent trackers, hardly anything significant of the literally hundreds of millions of PC gamers. Or the millions who actually played the first game on Steam. The sequel eventually did poorly because it took Nixxes 10 patches to fix the game due to it being rushed.

My bad, I read this incorrectly. I do think that people are jumping the gun when judging this generation. At least wait for it to play out before comparing it to the ps4 lineup.
