Drag-on Dragoon 3 producer acknowledges that the lack of core sequels is a problem

Square's showing at the recent PS4 announcement conference was a low point for them, in my eyes. Yeah, this gen has been rough for "classic" JRPGs. Rough is actually an understatement...but there are people that really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2. But with such little output in all these years, with games just being off the radar with nothing to show for it for an entire console life cycle, you don't have anything ready to show off for the PS4?! Nothing. Like not even a new video...or an extended clip of that same tired video you've been showing for over a year? Come on now

I'm still trying to process the ''millions of fans'' who demanded a FF-13 sequel, I haven't even tried to rationalize their development process, or the third 13 game.

Maybe they read that millions "did not" want another and just discarded the "did not" part and blamed it on "western thinking".

"millions of fans" is likely derived from the millions of people who bought ff13. it's less "we are two million fans who want more final fantasy 13 because we love The Lightning Saga" and more "hey this game sold 3m+ copies, we should make a sequel and sell it to them"

Keep going going further into irrelevancy SE, I'm not buying your shit FF games sorry.

Epic showed off the same demo as well, and they've only made 3 games this entire console generation (all sequels to the same thing). SQEX has made way, way more than that (hell, they have 3 MMOs going).

And they're showing off PS4 stuff in the next 2-3 weeks.

... I think I'm gonna weep for awhile.

They weren't heavy hitters in the West to begin with. If they are being made, those games won't sell anyway, the market taste has shift so significantly.

Doesn't Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile sell more than Drakengard anyway? Don't they at least hit a near million?

Although, Star Ocean and VP are known to push graphics ala Square Enix style...

But a sequel to drakengard is easy money?

It may not be easy money but considering what they have shown us they certainly didn't put a lot of weight in the graphics department. They don't need to either. I think out of all these options, Drakengard might just be the only one that can get away with it.

But the system and market had everything to do with development direction.

The DS became the de-facto device for RPG development due to userbase. The system required developers to take a new approach (less focus on presentation for example) to how they made these games.

I mean the trend is there. If they were forced into sticking with console development only, we would have a very different jRPG market today.

Look at Solatorobo DS for production values. It shits on most JRPG on the system.

There's a lot of aproaches they could have chosen but regard the titles you mentiones they choosed a cheap and safe approach. And the result it shows.

If SE (and tri ace) wanted VP on DS could have looked like the PS1 game and it would have been a beautiful game.

But a sequel to drakengard is easy money?

I like to think of this game like the swan song of Wada. He seems to like Cavia works.

Ugh, no. The DS version of Valkyrie Profile ruined the series.

Infact, all of these series were ruined. From the Valkyrie Profile on DS to Star Ocean 4 to the PS2 Romancing Saga remake. All sucked.

I agree that game sucked, but it doesnt mean all handheld games in these series have to suck in the future. If these series are to return, it probably is on handhelds since that is where it makes sense to make games of this budget.

None of the people who wanted to try new things are there anymore.

Honestly... I think I'll stop playing Square Enix games when they stop making cool looking characters or stop having awesome music for their games. (I'm sure someone is about to respond with FFXIII here but I enjoyed the OST a little. The characters... not so much.)

Honestly the only S-E game I wasnt that happy with was the FFXIII set and XIV 1.0. Handheld entries and FFXIV 2.0 are/were great.

XIII took too long to really get started, XIII-2 story makes no sense, and honestly i'm not happy with the fact that technically you only control one character with the battle system / dont really seem to have to put much thought into attacks.

Yep. Me and you think very much alike. I loved FFXII but didn't like XIII, XIII-2 or XIV 1.0. I do like what I've seen of 2.0 though and will almost definitely play that one.

This confirms what we already suspected with Tri-Ace and honestly, who is surprised by the lack of Romancing SaGa? This will only end when S-E can produce decent console games in a reasonable time period without horribly mismanaging their staff.

Or they'll just work on mobile games.

To be fair, can you imagine how potentially vile a new VP would be if made by SE of today? If it's not for 3DS/Vita, I'd be pretty terrified.

Agree.

Hrist is my favorite female video game character and the thought of letting Square Enix make her game as things stand today is positively horrifying.

It's still a shame in some ways we'll probably never see another
non mobile/social/shovelware
Valkyrie Profile or Radiata Stories. At least they haven't been tainted.

Also keep away from Chrono.

VP2
Code:
Week 1: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) - 281,510
Week 2: Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) 37,466 (318,976)
Week 3: Valkyrie Profile 2 - 18,683

Drakengard 2
Code:
Week 1: PS2 Drag-on Dragoon 2 - Square Enix - 125,000 (NEW)
Week 2: PS2 Drag-on Dragoon 2 - Square Enix - 27,000 (153,000)

Anyone else thought that title should be changed in SE is not working?

It certainly isn't an unfair thing to say these days. Beside Lightning Returns, one wonders if Square Enix is actually working on anything at all. 7 years now they've done nothing for Versus, and every year sees another of their franchises culled. Even the new IPs that have spawned in that period are forgotten.

Moreover, they're not really functioning, either.

According to SE's financial report in 2007: “ValkyrieProfile 2 Silmeria” (420 thousand units in Japan and 160 thousand units in North America, ditto), plus 170k in Europe Totalling 750K at the end of 2007.

Maybe 750k for a PS2 game back in 2007 isn't indicative of a healthy franchise this generation? Or did Star Ocean 4 and Resonance of Fate instil so much doubt about tri-ace's financial success that they don't get the same funding as they used to?

I think SO4 is to blame, not only sales (weren't that bad actually) but reception too. RoF partly too, although to lesser degree, I think SO4 was much more expensive to make.

IIRC, both Star Ocean 2 and 3 hit a million WW. I'm assuming SO4 reached over 500k WW (360 - 200k, PS3 - 150k in JP).

But yeah, SO4's graphics looked pretty expensive compared to SO3.

They should just focus on making FF great again imho. No need of sub-series once you have already a big jRPG series that can re-invent everything with each iteration. Though I don't get why they're developing Drakengard 3...

Still, I don't think it's smart from SE part to bury such franchises and Tri-Ace in general after one not very successful game after years of profitable (to SE) partnership. It seems way too harsh and unfair.

and if the Last Remnant was made by SaGa team, they totally could let them to make another game. For a new IP, tLR sold not that bad and I like this game a lot.

It seems SE plain refuse to make what many of us like.

Yep, I literally can't think of a good RPG series that has released anything good since being on the DS.

The DS ruined Suikoden, Lufia, and Valkyrie Profile, to name a few. Soon to be Shin Megami Tensei.

Eh...what? You realize these are all spinoff games right? You think spinoffs were barring these companies from making new mainline entries on consoles?

If anything, high HD development costs killed the chances of these series getting mainline entries. That and publishers not giving a shit about them. Konami disbanded the Suikoden team and SE has no interest in a new VP. What does that have to do with the DS?

Also the SMT games have been on portables for a while and have been doing just fine. If you want a console SMT wait for Persona 5.

.

2 things to consider, S-E's business has been shaky(to put it bluntly) and their getting things changed. They simply may not have the time nor money to do anything with these series? Plus Atlus/Index has being doing ok & they've followed the money trail.

I'm not sure about that. Development costs certainly didn't help, but DS games didn't help any named franchise either, except may be SMT. And I did like VP: Covenant of the Plume but it is still not a game fans of VP want, and don't get me start on Suikoden. I mean these games didn't bring new fans to franchises and alienated some old. How is that a good thing?
