The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

I didn't check but someone mentioned 2 gigs.
Edit: there you go..

One thing that people haven't brought up often is how health works. No regen BS and using medkits actually takes time so forget about doing it during a fight.

Cancel and try again.

No health regen?
That's kind of cool, it seems ND really have gone for a survival horror; considering their previous games it is surprising, Capcom didn't have the balls to do it with Resi 6.

@the dude mulling around in the demo files: anything suggesting that the cutscene at the beginning of the demo was pre-rendered? I know there's often a big fidelity gap between real-time cutscenes and gameplay, but I've never seen a gap THIS big. It doesn't really matter in a practical sense (the main issue with pre-rendered cutscenes is that they hurt ""immersion"" when the cutscenes look like they take place in a whole different world than the gameplay (see: Final Fantasy X) but as long as you keep them in the same ballpark (see: Metal Gear Rising) it doesn't matter) and I know a lot of games have to pre-render a few cutscenes anyways (like the volta river scene in MGS4) but in this case it would almost feel deceitful because of how it was assumed that all the footage we've seen thus-far was being rendered on a PS3 or equivalent.

Nope. You literally enter into an animation where you watch your character crouch and take his time to apply bandage/health. There is no magic button press.

Same goes for switching guns. Have to dig though your backpack for it... No instant weapon switch

For some reason they don't want to be called survival horror but this game seems to be the very definition of it.

It's like in the Uncharted games, they are pre-rendered videos and not real time. Not being rendered in real time allows for better IQ and some extra effects.

Another interesting thing in the same regard is that when you open your backpack to craft health kits or weapon items, then the game is not paused. So they really want us to think survival and not just be able to do such things in the middle of fights :-)

That's pretty awesome, I like loads of games that are the other way round, but for survival horror it doesn't seem right.
The real time crafting also seems pretty cool, doing it in a menu while the game paused always used to annoy me.
I'm looking forward to seeing what reviews are like! I'm not going near the demo due to spoilers though, I can't ruin another game for myself.

I didn't notice that about Uncharted, probably because there are still enough graphical issues with the cutscenes to make them look real-time. I guess what I'm tryna get at is I don't mind if a cutscene is prerendered, but I really do mind when there's such a big gap between cutscenes and gameplay that it's jarring every time the game switches between them. What I'm saying is I wish the prerendered cutscenes in the Last of Us looked just a little bit worse.

just played the demo. I can't stand it. the controls are awful and it really doesn't look impressive at all. I'm glad because I would have purchased it without seeing the demo. another case of too much hype and the game not delivering at all.

This is going to be the Resident Evil 4 of this gen isn’t it? I can sense it. Gah, I'm gonna get out of this thread before I get tempted to download.

No... from what I've played and seen, Resident Evil 4 wishes it was as Resident Evil as this game.

I shot it 3 times and nothing happened. Aren't you supposed to throw something at it?

There are
some bricks/bottles on the ground next to it...

24 minutes left on my download thanks to Evolved. Reading this thread has gotten me really hyped for it.

See this is why i'll wait for release to play this. Demo is from a few months old build.

I sorta expected better graphics from what I've seen in past Uncharted games. I thought the textures on the outside area were a bit washed out, but the interiores looked great

Just played it but still not feeling the hype for this. It's all very gorgeous especially the sound and music. But on the other hand it sorta confirms my expectations that it will be like this: Interactive scene > walk some bit > interactive scene > walk some bit > interactive scene > actual gameplay > interactive scene...
Don't get me wrong, I would gladly play though the complete game. But I'm not that a big fan of those heavily scripted games. If only the demo was a bit more fleshed out.
Yeah, not really an impressive segment of the game. Sort of felt like a slower Uncharted (though what combat is in here feels way better than Uncharted 3).

Also noticed lots of dry segments with no activity where I was expecting some interesting dialogue or backstory, but the characters were just pretty much silent. You'd get a comment or two like "did you hear that?" or "it's all safe" and then back to silence. Hopefully they take advantage of those quieter spots in the full game and chose this for the demo to avoid major spoilers. Those quieter moments are the perfect place to establish some lore and build the relationship between Joel and Ellie.

Either way, the demo is a pretty short slice of the game. Could still be great otherwise.

I would really like to know the size of the final game now. Still, will pre-order after E3. Can't wait to play this.

The demo only downloads what you're going to use. First I chosse Portuguese as my language (since I'm in Portugal), but then I noticed that it only downloaded the portuguese dialoges. So when I choose English dialogue, it then downloaded what was needed.

So the size can depende on what you choose to install

Curious, I finished the demo and then went back and decided to install Portuguese as my language too (since I'm also in Portugal) but I did not like it to be honest.

Hearing them calling the "Clickers" "Clicadores" felt a bit... Off.

That is very solid length I believe. Have they mentioned if it was with(out) side play/missions, collectives (if any) kind of stuff?

They couldn't get into any specifics, since there is an embargo until June 5th. It was 1 guy who played it, who said that since he didn't really like the demo he played some time ago, but that the final version of the game won him over.

I was talking more about how it’s going to be a critical darling/classic rather than how it actually plays.

Sorry fellow GAFfer....I'm not sure. Fellow GAFfer, perhaps you can try Google to find your answer fellow GAFfer.

I'm not sure since I didn't listen to the podcast where it was mentioned. Someone just brought it up earlier in this thread. But this is what ND said about it

“We’re definitely looking at more than 12 hours, maybe 12 to 16 right now is what we’re looking at,” explains Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer in a video interview. “It really depends on how you play. You can play a little bit slower if you try to approach situations stealthy, if you really wanna explore the environment and scavenge, that’s going to add more time too.”

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/16/the-last-of-us-single-player-campaigns-length-revealed

So, it sounds like they're saying it's around the Videogame.com length if you're just playing straight through without doing much exploring.

That waaaaas....kinda fantastic.

Took me back to my Uncharted Drakes Fortune excitement before the sequels took it away.

Hope this game stays as a stand alone classic.

Just like the first Uncharted, despite the linearity, it didn't FEEL linear, which I love.

huge spoilers. literally game ruining spoilers, potentially.

I'm sorry, but
don't the last two shots of the post-demo trailer basically spoil the ending? I'm not even gonna write it down here, but it's what a lot of people were expecting. the last two shots, if you pay attention to them (especially the second to last) they pretty much confirm those suspicions and reveal what is probably the big twist at the end of the game.

edit: just to summarize though if you're the type of person who cares even the slightest bit about spoilers (I'm not, fortunately) do not play the demo and DEFINITELY don't watch the trailer that starts to play when the demo is over.

Thats awesome. I've been waiting for game that applies a more realistic weapon switch approach :D

Some companion AI appreciation. The first time I played, I went into the destroyed building where I was supposed to go while the ladies went straight towards the search lights. Once I advanced enough, Joel yelled for Tess and they came to me. Realizing I was where I was supposed to be, I went over to where they were to explore and thinking there was a bit of interactive dialogue encounter (and I was bummed that I seemed to screw it up).

So the second time through, I go straight towards the search lights, Joel asks "see anything", I look back and they are heading towards the destroyed building. LOVE that they don't just follow you and actually explore on their own whether highlighting the main path or showing you an optional place to search. Such a small thing, but satisfying. Reminds me of Yorda, a bit, now that I think about it.

That's a nice touch, more games should do this.

Gah! don't waste your bullets! There are other ways...

Seriously I had only 6 bullets in my revolver ... i put two in the chest of one of the Clicks and he still kept coming .. I ran away like a bitch LOL ... tried to fend them off with my fists and my knife but they were too much for me! Awesome game!
