Hmm, a way to get worse, I can see it.

I think the most telling thing of all this info is the fact MS approached game publishers, not the other way around. I would be upset, but this tells me that these DRM plans are Microsoft's, and Microsoft's alone, and that lessens the chance that Sony adopts it as well.

It does suggest this, however a word of caution in that sometimes the same ideas can come about through different mechanisms at the same time, simply through serendipity.

Sony and Microsoft operate in the same business - they all are aware of the "problem" (accordign to publishers/developers) of used games. It's still possible that Sony might do it, but obviously its in an indeterminate state right now. The fact its not down to publisher pressure does offer a glimmer of hope.

This puts EA's E3 line-up at:

-Titanfall
-Mirror's Edge 2
-Dragon Age 3
-Battlefield 4
-Plants vs. Zombies 2
-Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare
-Need For Speed: Rivals
-Command & Conquer
-Star Wars Plans
-The Sims 4
-Madden
-FIFA
-UFC
-NBA

This is probably better than anything they've had in quite some time.

I'm kinda expecting them to continue SW: Battlefront. It's a title that really fits them and the Frostbite engine would really work. Then again, they could just do a star wars BF4 expansion :lol

What does Silver even do on the Xbox 360? Maintain a friends list and buy marketplace content?

I let my Gold expire. Basically you can play single player games and buy shit. Might get a month or few months of gold for when GTA V comes out. As of now there isn't a game where its multiplayer warrants my extra cash.

We really should be applauding Activision. They've been a cut above the rest on the DRM front.
It's not because they love us. It's because they understand the liquidity the used game market creates. That's the same reason they don't have online passes -- they make their money on DLC -- which someone may not buy if they don't have access to the MP. It's why the "corporations gonna corp" argument from apologists is atrocious. There are other ways to make money that are more consumer-friendly.

Gold HAS to be involved with online checks or something like that. You know MS is going to push that horrible fucking service even more this gen.

Hell, they made HD-DVD as a stalling tactic! They're fucking unreal and have no business shepherding the growth of gaming as a medium.

I agree, when the real Xbox One came out my friends wanted me to get it, and I told them no way. Why? Because Microsoft will find a way to ruin gaming by trying to monopolize that market like they have done with their OS, Document and Spreadsheet tools, etc. Anyone that thought that Microsoft, the company that charges $100+ for office and charges hundreds of dollars for their OS, getting involved in gaming would end in anything but tears was kidding themselves.

DRM can be worse:

- Even discs are useless six months after release. Once they say it's not a game, it's not a game.
- A limit on the amount you can trade, resell or pass on games. Say, three a year.
- If your account is banned from Live, your games are deleted.

Surely the last one will be obvious. Banned from Live means no authentucation means no access to your games. Rememer, MS is just granting you permission to play the games you've paid for. Permission they can revoke whenever they want e.g. You've been naughty.

I agree that's a distinct possibility, but then again Sony is a Japanese company. This stuff wouldn't fly there, and it wouldn't fly in several other countries either. So that gives me hope as well.

But that's not to say they don't introduce a lessened DRM scheme of their own.

edit: tried to fix the bad grammar. God, I'm tired.

famousmortimer has said basically the same thing from Sony's side.

The DRM wasn't the publishers idea.

Again, both Sony and MS do this all the time. Ever seen 3rd party TV commercials?
First, it's not happening in a vacuum. Piled on top of everything else MS is doing, it's certainly doesn't help their overall perception right now.

Second what seems unprecedented here is the amount of payola for a single conference. It sounds like there's at least 3-4 titles that MS will be getting exclusive announcements for, just for the sake of something that will be confirmed to the contrary before either of these consoles launch anyway.

Well they've found a way to make money that doesn't screw us all over.

I just feel like they should be praised for it.

Telling everyone I know not to buy Xbone. What a joke

Xbox Live Gold required now because POWER OF THE CLOUD. Due to the additional resources required for the cloud, MS feels it offers the consumer an incredible value at the low yearly price of $69.99 or get the whole family involved for only $99 per month(required to share games with the 10 family members, albeit one at a time).

I'm pretty sure this guy is partial to Microsoft, he said the same exact thing about my post detailing prism for Microsoft, and got riled-up because I didn't mention internet explorer, msn, facebook, google, or yahoo doing the same thing.

''Google, etc. doth the same!!''

Well, woopdy fucking doo, are they the ones that are currently in the hotseat? You have kinnect 2.0, and worse drm to push this further.

I still feel sick for making the Xbox reveal OT. Blegh.
It's not your fault.
This is what Sony and Nintendo both thought going into the N64 and PS3. No one is infalliable in this inudstry.

Jeez if this DRM thing gets worse this place is going to meltdown the next few days.
Yeah, I try to remain optimistic, but people have not shown a great group intelligence when it comes to things like this.

unless a game is explicitly stated to be exclusive, you must assume otherwise.

#TEAMCBOAT for life

And that is just a shit result. Paying to prevent people talking about the damn platforms it is on. Weak as piss.

Ways for DRM to get worse.......

My guess is that these companies reserve the right to shut down servers for those games at anytime. Thus the guy that posted that iOS Rockband image I think is spot on.
