Gnomoria - $3,99 (50% off)

This looks interesting, I love sim games with management, but I'm not really sold on the concept. Maybe I should look up youtube game play videos.

Is Unepic good? The name is a turnoff.

For me (remembering tastes are subjective) it is the best Indie game I have ever played, when you first start it you think "meh" this is an average at best as the humour is cheesy, but the more you play it the more you realise there is a massive depth to it....

Not to mention your class builds etc, the bosses need thought...

I do have some issues, but I will be a little vague so as not to spoil it for you....

My main issue is the developer wont give steam keys unless you buy it from him or steam, I got mine from GOG, without realising I would not get access to a steam key :(

There is a bit of a Pay to win side to the game (if you buy the game from the developer website) as you can buy credits, to get access to more powerful weapons etc

Also once you have collected enough money from killing stuff, you can make your life a lot easier by purchasing the quest items that would normally require you to explore....

However they counter that by making each room have candles, that if you want to make sure you have been there you need to light all the candles in that room.

It reminds me a lot like a 2d Dark Souls (not as tough, and death is not permanent) but in the way that once you realise certain things it makes you think, "if only I had done it like that my life would be easier"

For example (I will spoiler this bit, it is not massive spolier, more of a helpful hint)

Each section has a spirit in the shape of a golden square, who will give you a quest in each area, to unlock powerful spells etc, when you first start playing you wont fins these squares as you dont know where they are in each area, so you would clear an area, find the square then have to do the area again to complete the quest items the spirit wants..... however you soon realise that the main shop sells a "gold square finder" once you buy that you activate it each time you go into a new area so you head straight for the gold square... saves you having to re-run the area twice

There is currently a lot of work going into the MP side of things, I have not tried that yet, but it seems to be getting a lot of threads about the MP side of things on his website, however I have not read one single complaint about the SP game, with most people being gutted when they finish it...

There are some serious challenges if you are that type of person. like complete the game with no lighter, complete the room with 52 traps with no damage etc etc, also there is new game+, ++ and +++

Is Unepic good? The name is a turnoff.

Yes, its really, really good. I need to get around creating the OT for it eventually.

Anyway, some impressions from the monthly Indie thread:

"And Unepic is an amaaaaaaaaaaazing game. It basically plays like a non-random roguelike with witty dialogue and interesting level progression"

"I wrote and rewrote a personal review of this last month because it was about all I was playing but never posted it. All I found to bitch about was the swearing in the dialogue. I found the game to be incredibly funny and clever, then there's a "fuck" inserted and I just found it seemed out of place and unnecessary for some reason."

"An addicting mix of Metroidvania and straight RPG. Pretty hilarious in its original Spanish scrit, but there's tons of languages available, including English; they however reportedly kept the traditional Spanish foulmouthedness intact, so you might want to cover your ears... or eyes, I guess. Beautiful 2D visuals, atmospheric lighting and a forebonding soundtrack converge to create an ominous and truly engaging experience. Has a free demo that I've not beaten yet, so it must be quite long."

"This game really is what Toma advertised! Loved the intro and all the references so far, this game caught my attention. Everyone should play it. "

"Caught me by surprise, I'd been eyeing it previously on desura and decided to try it out. Definitely worthwhile and I will be investing in a copy of it as soon as I get a chance."

"I finally played the demo of Unepic. The game generally seems like it should be right up my alley, but everything about the setup and dialogue turned me off. It's a shame it's so needlessly vulgar, because the actual game seems sort of neat. I'll give it another try sometime."
And in response:
"It's worth pushing through. I found most of the 'comedy' in that game to be agonizingly unfunny and the menus are a little lacking. But after a few hours the quality of the gameplay shines through all its flaws. The use of light to signify explored and unexplored areas is a highlight for me."

So I narrowed my most wanted after Gunpoint and Warband down to three:

And Yet It Moves
Pid
Nimbus

I would have never found about these games if not for this thread. I definitely would have overlooked Pid and Nimbus. Those games looks so good, especially to a fan of a physics puzzle platformers like me. Thanks for the recommendations

And I'm happy to say that every game I've bought so far during the sale has been an indie: Bastion, Incredipede, Garry's Mod, Cargo Commander, Puddle. Those last two, I had never heard of before this thread.

(Would GMod be considered indie? Sure it's a mod for AAA games, but it's certainly not a mainstream game and I think it's only made by one guy)

I recommend ignoring AYIM unless you can get it for DIRT cheap. I forced myself to play through it, the level design is really underwhelming.

This looks interesting, I love sim games with management, but I'm not really sold on the concept. Maybe I should look up youtube game play videos.

Its hard to exactly explain how the game is supposed to play if you cant immediately try it. Its not an RTS, but you basically assign gnomes to do certain jobs and they do that job. You start off with a few gnomes that need to do the tasks you assign them to do (digging rooms, farming, hunting, building) and you need to make sure you put the amount of gnomes you have to the best possible use, while also taking care of the needs of the gnomes. They want rooms to sleep in, booze, enough food and need to be kept safe from enemies roaming the area. There is a LOT to do here, since any new influx of Gnomes means you can now do more than before and also need have more Gnomes that need their needs satisfied. Its the best approximation of what Dwarf Fortress plays like without being bogged down by the horrible DF UI, so if you want to get a small glimpse of how DF might play, give this one a try. (I consider DF one of the most important videogames ever created, just for the sheer ambition and how that is pulled off so far, so anything that gets people closer to DF is a plus in my book :p)

As a neat bonus, learning how to play Gnomoria also helps you playing DF if you ever want to switch over.

Hmm I'll think about it then. You two made me interested on it.

The thing to remember is that it is a 20 hour game for £6!

anyway, have a look here

http://www.unepicgame.com/en/items.html

if you fancy any of those items you need to buy the game from his site with the "credits" attached

also remember dont buy from GOG if you want a steam key, and the biggest thing to remember is if you play on Hard or Hard+ there is no autosave, be warned! you have to go back to save point to save the game

For UnEpic, did they finally include controller support? I bought it a while ago in some bundle but the low-quality localization and the lack of controller support made me put it down. Really nice pixel work though.

English Country Tune worth it?

It's easily one of the most interesting puzzle games I've ever played. Can't recommend it enough, really. New levels introduce new gameplay mechanics all the time, making for a very varied experience. It's been described as 3D Sokoban by some, but that's only scratching the game's surface and you'll soon realize that there's a lot more to it.

You really need to think about some of the problems though, so it might not be for you if you prefer fast-paced puzzle games that focus more on challenging your reflexes. Experiences may vary though, as people with good visual-spatial ability might be able to rely on intuition where I actually had to think.

One more thing, the game looks great! There's a lot of puzzle games out there that are defined more by their visual style than by their gameplay. English Country Tune is the opposite: All about gameplay but still manages to look very nice.

Oh, and the game's creator seems to be a big fan of SpaceChem, maybe that will tell you more than everything else I've written. ;)
(gameplay-wise they're not related at all though)

TL;DR: Best 3D puzzle game in a long time. Buy it now and also gift it to all your friends! It's only 1.24$ and it'd still be great value at ten times that!

Really? Not even for $2.49? The rotating world mechanic looks cool and it got pretty positive reviews

What are your thoughts on Pid?

Ok, guess I'll turn this into a recommendation:

English Country Tune - 1.24$ (75% off)

Fantastic puzzle game that will challenge your spatial perception in various imaginative and interesting ways. Has been described as '3D Sokoban' by some, but there's a lot more to it as you'll soon realize when more of the game's many mechanics are introduced. It also looks great, runs on all platforms (Win/Mac/Linux) and is insanely cheap!

Yeesh, microtransactions? I thought when people said gold they meant in-game gold.

Also I thought it's pretty known that buying from GoG means no steam code.

I voted for Monaco, but the common trend means that Natural Selection will win

And not sure if anyone checks Toma's monthly thread during the Sale, but if anyone's interested, I posted about an awesome freeware indie, Outer Wilds

I'm surprised at the negative comments regarding And Yet It Moves...I thought it was quite fun. The rotating world mechanic results in clever puzzles that require you to think on your feet (or while in mid-flight/fall). You have to consider momentum and angles of your own trajectory as well as the movement of objects in the environment.

The later levels can get tricky (but never in a frustrating way, IMO), the music is fitting (there's even a level that incorporates it into the gameplay), and it's got a unique visual style (very different, so obviously opinions will vary on whether it's aesthetically-pleasing or not).

For $2.49, this game is more than worth it, IMO.

I'm confused - Does Unepic have microtransactions in-game or do you just get perks from buying from the creator's website?

It is not Microtransactions as such, it is basically saying if you want to buy something unique that you can not buy in game, then you can...

I have nearly finished the SP side and not once did I feel underpowered, The only useful tool would of been the ring that tells you when the game autosaves, I looked through that list and not one thing did I see that you would need to make your life easier...

I think it is more for MP side, there is no option to buy once ingame, those items come with the game when you buy it

I did not know, I dont mind, dont have any problem with no DRM versions, was just makinf people aware

read here http://www.unepicgame.com/phpBB3_en/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=905

explains it much better, you can earn credits in MP (I did not know that) but not if you buy the steam version, so I have no idea how that works

I haven't played Fist Puncher since the demo, but I enjoyed it a lot and it's on sale right now, sooo

Fist Puncher - $6.69 - 33% off

A humorous (and sometimes hilarious) 80's-spoofing beat-em-up in which you lead black belted neurosurgeon Dr. Karate and his team of vigilantes (rounded out by the likes of Steroid Jackson, President Endicott, Kid Justice, The Beekeeper, to name a few) as they "provide unnecessary surgery on the criminals of the city". It's fun, it's funny, it has 4 player co op and an upgrade system, and it's definitely an under-recognized gem for all the Streets of Rage fans out there.

I'm souring on UnEpic.

I bought the game as part of the July Jubilee Indie bundle. I picked up the bundle mostly for that and Oniken.

The bundle came with a key for Desura, which is cool, and I paid whatever the minimum was to get all the games + extras + soundtrack.

So now I find that the Desura version is old - still stuck at 1.3 or whatever. Steam keys have been issued to people who bought the game before a certain date - but only if you registered on the main site. Of course, they tell us after the fact so people like me, who supported the game over a year ago, have to pay extra to buy the game on Steam just to play the latest version.

There are a ton of developers out there and a lot of them treat their players better, I guess I'll just support them instead of UnEpic in the future.

edit:

Also, I'm looking for an Indie game that came out about 1-2 years ago and features a boy and a girl. I think it's a platformer and you toggle between the two characters to take advantage of their different abilities or something? I seem to recall the story being above moving up? I feel like I had it on my wishlist but removed it for some reason and now I can't find it.

Any ideas?

McPixel looks funny but I suspect the iOS version is a better fit for the kind of game it is. Anyone knows if there are any big differences between the PC and mobile versions?

edit: nm, went with iOS.

How is Monaco single player? Is it still fun or does it need to be a co-op game?

I voted for it also.
It's a little slower and more deliberate in SP and possibly some characters are better at it. In MP it can become hilariously chaotic but that's half the charm of playing it in MP.

I would put a post on his forum mate, as that seems a little crappy.

I hope this game goes down in price a little bit more. If not, will still buy.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. If it drops down to 50% off I'm in immediately, but for now I'm in "wait and see" mode. Doubt it'll drop considering how new it is, but no reason to not hold out a few more days.

I don't know how Steam does it to me, but it makes me worry about that $1.69 much more than I ever do in real world situations.

What are your thoughts on Pid?

I liked AYIM. I think your opinion on it might change depending on how much you like platformers and what you expect from them. The rotating world mechanic is cool at first, but you will be doing the same things through the game, so the sense of novelty will be gone fast. However, AYIM has a nice-looking and varied world, each level has a different theme, and the controls being good, which they are, that is enough to get me through the game.

PID is similar: you will be doing the same things that the game teaches you in the firs few levels throughout the whole game, but the levels are so beautiful and a pleasure to traverse at the same time that I can't help but love it.

I admit, I am easy to please: give me a platformer with a beautiful art stile and good controls, so that it is a pleasure to move through the levels, and I will love it.

The microtransactions are a bit weird, but not necessary to play through the game at all. I guess its just a paid cheat to get an advantage/finish the game.

The art style was undoubtedly great, but seriously the level design was preeeeeeeeeetty bland. If you dont play platformers for level design, then it wouldnt bug you much, but if you do, you'll get bored from it pretty fast.

I'm the same. I don't need new mechanics every few levels. If a game has one "gimmick" mechanic but it explores it in various cool ways and wrings some brain twisting puzzles, I like that. Pid, I'm especially interested in because the hard mode actually makes the levels more difficult. Replay value FTW

Take Puddle for example. Very simple, rotate the environment to move fluids. But one level you're fueling a space ship then in zero G. Another, you're in the human body, controlling peristalsis and avoiding stomach acid and needles

Problem is that AYIM doesnt "explore its mechanic in various cool ways and wiring some brain twisting puzzles". It eventually adds some stuff but they are as basic as they could possibly be.

Sorry for being so negative on the game, but it really disappointed me level design wise. But others recommend it, so go ahead and buy it. I am probably just too grumpy :p

You would like The Splatters then, which is in my opinion better than Puddle.

If you play for 30 minutes, the game is okay, but if you try to finish it, AYIM is so bad I would recommend avoiding it.

Toki Tori 2+ is on 34% sale throughout the entire Summer Sale so it should still be in the op although it is a new release so maybe not?

Pretty enjoyable and easygoing puzzle-platformer underneath which lies basically another game that is as merciless as Super Meat Boy and I've only realized that because it got achievements added not that long ago. Beating the original 100 levels took me maybe 2-2.5 hours, it took as much to unlock the next 10 levels and I don't know when I'm gonna unlock the last 10 because they're hard as fuck compared to the rest XD

I bought the game in the same bundle so it should work for you too.

I wasn't doubting you. Just surprised, cause I had ignored it. Have to check it out now

You should also check Snapshot, the creator of Offspring Fling was also involved with that game. This is what I wrote about it on Steam:

After finishing Snapshot, I can say its greater quality is the superb level design. Although the entire game being built around the use of the camera, the levels still bring something new until the very end. The first few levels can be a little repetitive, you practically just uses your camera to move boxes around, but after that the game introduces new objects (disappearing clouds, fireball throwing flowers, elephant trampolines and many others) constantly, just giving you enough time to learn how to use them before introducing something new. The majoraty of the objects are used only in a handful of levels before being dropped for something new, keeping the game always fresh. The game is very easy if you finish the level without completing any secondary goal, so I recommend to go after the secret objects and the stars for maximum enjoyment. The graphics, although simple, are a delight to look at, evocative of the 16bit era platformers: they are exactly how you remember them being at the time, not pixelated and low resolution as they truly are. If you try to complete secondary objectives, the game will give you at least 10 hours of fun, more than enough to justify the $10 price.
