Battlefield 4 PS4 runs at 720p native [DICE: Incorrect]

Do you not get headache that close to the TV? I play like 4 meters away from mine. Anything less than 2 and my eyes and head start to hurt after a while.

I haven't experienced any problems in that regard. In fact, I feel like sitting too far away strains my eyes much more because I have a harder time making stuff out and need to concentrate more.

My GF gets motion sickness from playing on the big screen though :)

I wonder if the XBO version will run at 640x480 or something, it would remind me of my DOS days :-)

256 color BF4 Xbox1 confirmed.

The funny thing is that many users with HD7850 will play it with 1080p on PC. ^_^

That is the insanity of it. I am still thinking they should have turned down a number of effects quality to get a higher resolution.. there is nothing they can really do about CPU load... but GFX effects are always togglable... I guess their focus testing informed this decision just as much as the 60fps one.

i wonder what could happen on gaf if the xbo version run in higher or with more fps :D

I am pretty sure that will never happen.

You're right but let's not pretend that plenty of console people perfectly enjoyed BF3 in the mess that it was on consoles.

I played the 360/PS3 versions and it hurt my eyes to see the IQ.

This looks to be a step up for console folk but I'm still a little disappointed they couldn't deliver 1080p.

ps3/360 versions of bf3 offered some of the worst IQ i've seen this gen. god awful.

Mandating resolution or framerate is an exercise in futility. Microsoft tried it with the X360 and 720p but quickly backed off.

If neither Sony or MS require 1080p as a minimum developers will just go down to 720p further down in the console's life to get the most out of the console's graphics capabilities.
Sony & MS need to put their foot down and require 1080p as a minimum otherwise we'll have 720p/30fps games towards the end of every gen.

So you guys want 1080p - 60fps - 64 players online - at console launch? I mean come on.

Yes?

I was doing that no problem at ultra settings on my PC 2 years ago which was then running hardware that's worse than in the PS4.

This is ridiculous. If Halo 5 is 720p but features massive battles that the series its known for at 60fps, that's a much more important upgrade.

Sigh...

720p@60fps halo 5 then 343 really has given up on halo franchise then i can just as easily pretend next gen consoles don't exist for the next 2~3 years.

I can understand them doing the killzone route bell and whizles all on in singleplayer at 30fps and dumb down the graphics in multiplayer for 1080p@60fps. I want an sharp and fluid experience in multiplayer with old skool halo(1,2 and 3) gameplay. I have no worries 343 can deliver the 60fps and hopefully 1080p im more worried about the gameplay.

Jaguar then I would guess has to be the limiting factor

I want to mention KZ (24p online) again but then again, this is a 64p game.

I don't think this is as big a deal as some are making it as looks to be a step up from last gen but there's a little part of me which wanted at least 1080p.

The carnivale of stupid shows it's wonders again.

For majority of console owners 60FPS/720p will be a completely new world with a game like Battlefield, especially that $399 builds you a toaster PC if you don't have any parts.

EA does not care that few enthusiasts will get mad, niether they will state if it's just them being lazy or consoles limitations.

Should really keep the blaming Sony crap out of here, if you don't think this will be the same on xbone or worse, then you are dreaming.

They are both to blame no ? for trying to go the super affordable route and not thinking about the long term.

If only they spent a little more money and took a little bit more of a loss on each console.

Nope that didn't happen and as a result we got 2 consoles that probably can't run pc games from 2010 at max settings.

This is bad for everyone it will hold back pc gaming and console players will have subpar games.

What a bummer... I expected at least 1080p without AA... Upscale my ass. 720p upscaled looks like shit with jaggies and blurr. Amazing that it will be pretty close to its current gen version. No battlefield for me on consoles then. Killzone and CoD if its at 1080p and 60fps. DICE I thought you could do better...

One game running at 720p is enough to show that..

It's not one game. It's a lot of titles that can't maintain a 60 fps refresh rate at 1080p despite the fact that a number of them are cross-gen and as such, limited in design by the hardware of the current-gen consoles.

Whole thread of people who completely underestimated just how taxing 1080/60fps is on hardware. Next gen CPUs are weak compared to current desktops and bf3(soon to be 4) is a prime example of a cpu heavy game. What this announcement proves is that DICE has their priorities correct, take a hit to image quality in order to improve the gameplay. 30fps for a shooter is just unacceptable.

I played bf3 on a high end pc but will be picking up the console version this time.

watching the BF4 @ 720P, still looks incredible. Maybe there making 720p so they can keep the same level of graphics as the gameplay trailer running on like 3 7970's

It's not as though mandating 1080p would guarantee 1080p60 games. BF4 is 720p for a reason: Dice wants 60fps and 1080p60 is untenable as this juncture.

I'm amazed that the people who keep shouting all the '60 FPS' nonsense are ok with a game running at 720p. A resolution that low on a large 1080p TV is far more detrimental to the gaming experience than 30FPS.

Gameplay is more important than graphics, so I'd take the 720p. But this is essentially a PC game from 2 years ago being unable to run properly on a 'coded to the metal' console. It's not a good sign.

With proper AA it will look good.

So it'll look shit then. No console game has ever had good AA.

Yeah it's a heck of a lot more players for one. Online is where the CPU will come in to play more. Look at the difference on PC between BF3 SP and MP benches.

Microsoft had games that were SubHD at launch. The TRC was never followed

Have you seen it yet?

Nobody's seen it publicly on consoles yet.

Yes.

The GPU is strong enough.

Is it really?

The funny thing is that many users with HD7850 will play it with 1080p on PC. ^_^

Yes, by dropping the detail, AA, post processed effects etc when we are talking about multiplayer. People seem to be painfully unaware how taxing bf3 was to hardware that is far more powerful than these consoles, especially with the need to maintain 60fps and 1080p. It scales all the way from the low to the very high end. The consoles are somewhere in between, and their output will be reflective of this.

What?

Yes? Why shouldn't we expect it?

$399.

A CPU/GPU would cost $399 alone that is capable of playing BF4 at 1080p at just 30FPS, all you are missing is mobo, RAM, HDD, case, powersupply, keyboard, mouse, OS.

Getting bored of how entitled gamers are, you are expecting FAR too much considering the cost.

If you honestly can't tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, especially in fast-paced FPS', then your problem isn't psychological - it's physical. Get your eyes checked.

It's definitely not my eyes. I never said I didn't notice the difference, I said the the difference does not impact my enjoyment or anything of the game what so ever.

I am just not sensitive to the 30fps/60fps difference.

I'm actually pretty pissed at this. What the fuck is the point of a new gen if you can't utilize the hardware given to you. 1080p 60fps should be a fucking given at this point.

Microsoft had games that were SubHD at launch. The TRC was never followed

Yes, but third parties were expected to follow it and the mandate was soon scrapped entirely, which was my point. It's no secret that Microsoft has a history of bending the rules when it comes to its first-party stable or privileged partners.

Forza Horizon has a beautiful image quality and great AA.

This is kind of bringing me back down to reality. I have been a hardcore PC gamer for about three years now, but I have been pretty set on making the swap back to console gaming with the PS4 despite being a graphics whore. Knowing that this game is going to be running at 720p reminds me that I have zero control over the graphics in console games, and that is kind of scary. I would love to get back into the ease of use atmosphere of console gaming, but not at the cost of ever having to deal with 720p again. I do most of my gaming on my living room TV, so I don't go beyond 1080p. Because of that I was more than happy with the current consoles having 1080p standard, but knowing that developers can and will drop things to 720p makes me wonder how long it is going to take for 720p to become the standard for console gaming again.

These consoles aren't the most powerful systems, and it isn't going to take long for developers to max out the CPUs and GPUs. Once they do that are we going to be back into a cycle of seeing massive cuts to resolution, AA, and v-sync? This is a real eye opener, and while I won't be that person that says "pre-order" cancelled, I sure am thinking much harder about it now. AMD is releasing their new GPU's in a little more than a month, and those things are sure to provide some pretty mean power for the price of a PS4, and probably come with a major game or two.

More likely is that EA isn't investing much into next gen platforms at launch.

Although PS4/Bone are similar to PC's, they feature the Jaguar CPU which probably requires them to tweak Frostbite 3. 720p just seems like the easy way out at launch to get a steady 60fps rather than spending more time reworking their engine.

New consoles don't work miracles. Increase in power is expected to improve graphics fidelity, framerate, resolution, etc. You can't have it all.

Not in multiplayer at 60fps with high settings.

I barely get that with my OC'd 670.

I run BF3 at 1080p 60fps with all Ultra settings apart from AA (FXAA only, no MSAA) and effects (set on high cause smoke causes frame drops on ultra here) with a HD 7850 quite easily.

I mean I've had to overclock it a fair bit to get it to run at Ultra settings but to run it at the High preset with a 7850 at 1080p60 out of the box is very achievable.

The PS4 also has a 7850 at a higher spec than stock and there's obvious optimisations for consoles so that factors into it too. The PS4 can do it, but I think DICE went for image quality and framerate > resolution here.
