Battlefield 4 PS4 runs at 720p native [DICE: Incorrect]

To be fair, BF3 is probably one of the most demanding games out there for PC. This really shouldn't come as a shock that a $400 console can't keep up with a gaming rig.

it's actually tier down from the likes of metro:LL and crysis 3 as far as demands go.

i'd wager this won't be the only compromise when the comparisons roll out.

Exaggerate much?

Hes right though.

I play at 1440p and 1080p looks like trash to me now too.

This is the reason why 4k gaming is going to be amazing. The higher the resolution the less AA you need . It's so amazing to see a human size soldier in Arma 3 2 miles away on your screen.

You can't do that on a 720p image.

It does, so does e.g. every Atelier title on PS3 (4xMSAA). Good AA on consoles is not non-existent, just exceedingly rare.

Yep i mean i love certain consoles games but when i need to add my own AA ( sit further away from the screen ) because of image quality that is a problem .
Well it going to be cheap to buy a new PC so i not worry if that is what it comes to .

I'm surprised no one has played the "they had to have it at 720p @ 60fps on PS4 to keep parity with Xbox One" card yet.

We will never know. We do know PS4 is more powerful. It can't helped. Some are throwing fits when we should never forget that despite my own disappointment in BF3 on consoles, many more people bought it on PS3/360 than PC. This is a step up from that and the visuals are certainly a step up in detail. People will be very happy when they play it as there are people right now who have actually played the PS4 version who are more than happy with it.

You don't even need that. I have one 670 and get a solid 60fps on ultra settings at 1080p.

That's my rig to be clear. I run BF3 at 1080 maxed at 90-120fps. You will surely need a PC which is more expensive but this isn't the point of the conversation.

Can someone explain to an utter technical noob what the difference between native 1080p, and 1080p upscaled from 720p is?

Is there a huge difference between the two?

Yeah I know metro and c3 are more demanding that's why I said _one_ of the most demanding :)

Oh well, I'll still play it.

That's the spirit.

This is completely unacceptable, because we know what this means.

"Oh it's because maps are so big and dynamic weather and stuff!"
"Oh it's because it's an early launch title, the rest will be 1080p!"
"60FPS is all I care about!"

No!
NO!
NOOOOOO!!!!!

This is how it starts. First it's one title that is 720p/60FPS that sells like mad and of course other devs will jump on board of the 720p moneytrain. Easier to stuff effects into a scene and make it look pretty.
And before you know it, singleplayer games jump onto 720p/30fps because responsiveness is not that important there and we see ourselves back at square one.

No fucking thank you.

I take it really liked The Last of Us? I did too. However, the game did in fact run in the low 20s at times, for many, that is not acceptable.

I have played Metro 2033 on my old 6970 at 15-30fps on PC. Let's not pretend that it's unacceptable because we have all played good games and dealt with worse frame rates than TLoU.

I used to play Delta Force Extreme on an old PC at rough 20-40fps.

"Its the same great resolution as the current gen"

Have you played BF on PS3/360? It hurts the eyes but it's 720p then it's using some bad PP AA solution.

lol

Though nothing surprising to me. Disappointed still. The ghost of bad IQ of past still loves on.

Will pass on this game for sure.
I can understand people being disappointed, but its a shame that some people consider graphics to be *that* important for them to be able to enjoy a game.

If you were interested in BF4, but refuse to buy it now, its pretty laughable. I mean, that's your choice and all and if graphics are that important to you, then whatever, but I think that's just crazy.

720p has less pixels than 1080p so when you upscale it, you are stretching the smaller image over the whole screen.

See how 720p is smaller? It has less detail than the entire 1080p image so it will look worse when you blow it up whereas the 1080p image will always stay the same (unless you also attempt to stretch it on something larger).

720p 60fps over 1080p 30fps any day of the week. There really is no comparison between the two options.
They said it will be upscaled to 1080p, so it may not be that much of an issue.

Question. Is this something that they could or would work to sorting in a patch?

but but that guy said bf4 on ps4 was running at 1080p 60fps...

who to believe?

I'd believe someone who played it actually being very content with the way it looked even while admitting it's not a high end PC version with maxed out settings. The fun is there but that's the least important thing it seems.

I don't think the guys know what resolution it really was so it's easier to take this 720p remark as fact more than their word.

There is no comparison. Upscaling is simply what your tv/monitor can do anyway. If your tv has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and you send it a signal of 1280x720 pixels, by displaying it fullscreen it is upscaling. That is all. There are some fancy ways of improving the quality of this, but you can't extract detail that isn't there. Native 1080p is more than twice the detail of 720p, upscaled or otherwise.

You probably can, but have to guess if it is an bush or an Huma...
/sorry feels bad already

At twice the frame rate and with 64 players instead of 24.

People's expectations may have been too high for these console launch games, especially one as demanding as Battlefield.

People's expectations MAY be a little high? I think people have forgotten what launch games typically look like.

wow! this true??

I expected that at first, but to be honest after all this BULLSHIT talk about nextgen consoles and their hidden powers all these months, i was expecting at least a sub-1080 renderer, but not fuckin' 1280x720!!

anyway... if this is legit, it practically confirms that multiplatform games i will play on my pc.
from now and until a powerful box comes out.-

Oh I'm sure everyone has had play some game at some time at unacceptable frame rates, but that doesn't make them any less unacceptable. There have been enough discussions about the importance of 60 fps, let alone 120 fps that I don't feel I need to bother, let alone discuss sub-30.

If you feel you can play through a game like that, by all means, but I don't feel it's acceptable or worthy of any praise, and it does diminish your enjoyment of the game by affecting gameplay.

Should we then expect the same, or less for Xbox?

In my mind at least, this is kind-of expected given that they are doing a cross-over title for PS3/PS4 & 360/One ... perhaps they lowered their graphics to help with porting? And will go full 1080p/60FPS next iteration? Seems likely (to me at least).

720p and 60 fps is a VERY wise decision. 60 fps is what next generation should be about and i hope other developers follow suit.

It´s a good sign that two of the biggest players have made this extremely important decision. (Halo Next and BF 4)
