IGN's impressions of PS4 Remote Play with KNACK on Vita [beautifull image, no lag]

is remote play via home network only? if im at a hotel can I still remote play?

my TV has quite noticable input lag, so if i stream to vita = less input lag?

Probably.

I'd actually welcome the chance to add lag to the Wii U gamepad. It runs so much ahead of my tv that it can be distracting when the sound on the gamepad is a beat or two ahead the sound on the tv (very obvious with Nintendoland).

If this works as good at home it'll be amazing. I'm not sure if it'll boost Vita sales as much as Sony would like though.

Also, I can't get over how boring Knack looks. Ugh.

Looks amazing, can't wait.

The latency looks low enough for most games. The controls and screen size were never going to make it suitable for competitive online play in a fast paced shooter or fighter - but the vast majority of games should be pretty much perfect.

Probably less so over the internet. I can get really good pings with my home network to speedtest servers like 200 miles from here (like around 20ms) but it will also depend on internet I'm on wherever I am. Im guessing with two decent connections that games like Skyrim or GTA or Assassin's Creed - stuff that isn't very timing intensive - will work well over the internet. Im excited to fuck around with it. My work internet is awful- if I can anything even remotely playable over that it will be a miracle.

That rules out COD... no? It's extremely fast paced giving a giant disadvantage online

Honestly, if you want to play super competitive games with remote play, you're not going to find success. Not only is the input lag present but you're missing 4 buttons and have to make due with front or back touchpads instead.

It's a neat feature that I'll definitely use on my Vita, but to have expectations of CoD matches using your Vita...I think we need to temper those expectations.

That moment when when Knack jumps from balcony to the road below. There is a instant camera change, and I think both TV and Vita switched at the exact same time.

I will try to GIF it...

Yep I noticed that. Sony has done a marvelous job indeed.

Do we know how fast the internet connection is? I heard someone mention that you can already do this with ps3, how is the quality and latency with the ps3 and vita combo?

Latency on PS3 with perfect conditions is.... acceptable, but far from mind blowing. Image quality is 480p max. Very little games support RP on PS3 [except ALL PS1 games].

PS4 fixes both latency and image quality.

So I guess the odds of Sony releasing a Vita super-lite only with remote-play functionality is probably zero right? I have no interest in Vita games or spending $200 for what would essentially just be a sweet controller.

Buy second hand Vita, you dont need a memory card for it.

Wait so a console coming out 7 years later & built with second screens in mind does remote play better than the old console? amazing!

*shrug* you don't have to be a jerk about it. According to the people who actually bothered to respond to my query with substance the system was designed with it in mind and I learned a bit more about why it's so smooth/good.

We very well could have gotten a console coming out 7 years later that wasn't built with this in mind or had choppy remote play.

I didn't know this, which is why I asked.

I will be interested to see what range does to the connection. Can we assume the VTV will be even better?

Vita TV has an Ethernet port, so I don't think latency will be much of an issue anywhere in the home provided you're using that. IQ is another matter since Vita TV will only go up to 720p/1080i, so on a 1080p screen it won't look as nice. Plus there are compression issues at 720p/1080i to consider which will be less obvious on Vita handheld's lower resolution screen. Also, WiFi on Vita TV will obviously be a different matter entirely, unless the signal Vita TV gets from the home router is very good.

i gotta say I really wasn't expecting much of Vita PS4 Remote Play, but the positive impressions coming out of TGS are making me a believer.

Now I just hope it is close to this over the internet. I would absolutely LOVE to be able to play PS4 games with a buddy, he on his PS4 and me on my Vita over at his place.

I'm fine with some image quality loss as long as it is virtually lag free. Of course this is over WiFi, so we won't really find out until later.

Either way though, I'm glad they are pushing this, it makes me feel like I have a bit more value out of picking up a Vita now.

In the current PS3+Vita remote play situation, how is the private network connection made? Does it still use your router or do they use some other signal like bluetooth or something?

Basically the PS4 uses the wifi card to create a network your Vita can connect directly too (basically within 30 feet you can access this). You'd be looking at almost no latency, and from what the video shows maybe 2 frames behind. Look up what an ad hoc network is if that isn't clear.
Additionally, if you are far away you can just connect directly through wifi and your PS4 will turn on automatically. Should work regardless of the distance, latency might be an issue if you're on a bad connection, but otherwise easy and painless.

I noticed lag in the video, and there's screens which demonstrate this.

Shouldn't be a big problem for single player games, but could be an issue in multiplayer.

I'd be more concerned about the lack of buttons then lag if I was playing anything competitive.

If this works as promised I'm very excited for it. I have no interest in the Vita by itself but if I can actually stream all my PS4 games with very very little lag and no graphical downgrade then I will absolutely buy a Vita for it.

Have they said anything about the range for this? Will it work through walls and such? Sorry if that's a dumb question I don't really know how the tech works for this stuff.

Ad Hoc I usually could play 30 feet away through walls on my PS3. Anything through wifi

I sound like some pr rep right now

Hands on impressions looking awesome. Hype rising. As a new dad with only one TV in the house, let me just say - this is going to be fucking ACE.

Looks great, and is one of the bigger reasons I might go PS4 over XB1.

MS should get some off TV play stuff working with Smart Glass somehow.

Then you would have touch screen controls, however.

But yeah, I'll take that over nothing I think. Could work kind of well for certain games.

One of the reasons I am so stoked for the PS4. I cannot wait to play games on my already owned vita in bed. It is going to be so awesome. GAH!!

I noticed the slight lag even without the gifs, but I had to admit that I expected something way worse. For me this should be serviceable for any non-twitchy games.
