What is the game actually about?
I was so annoyed and felt let down by FFXIII (worst game of the gen for mw couldn't get in to it no matter how hard i tried).
Is this going to be different from FFXIII or more of the same

More is never necessarilly better, and at this point they are just shoving more in seeming just because, they seem to be spending more time trying to sell this game through nostalgia and dressing up Lightning than through actual gameplay.
Im not even sure as I might have missed it but do these actually affect anything? Personally I would have far preferred pieces of costumes we could put together ourself instead of just 100 random ones, give them stats, let us mix and match, give everything a real purpose

I'll take BDFF's way of customization over LR's anyday.
More choice is always a good thing. This really does nothing to take away from the game from what I'm seeing. It only adds to it.
At a certain point, we get diminishing returns on saying "bah, they just try to cash in on nostalgia". Simply because it is clearly not the case. Square Enix is not dumb, they know that if you hate Lightning already, more costumes will not change your mind.
If it is not for you, it is not for you. This place would be a mess if everyone kept crying when new features were added to games that they do not like. New cars in GT6? Please, racing genre, just die already, right?
I mean...what? At this point, you better accept that a new costume will be announced for Lightning every week or so, so prepare with the proper amount of salt for the following months as well!

They are totally banking on nostalgia, FF7 Nostalgia in fact with a bit of FFX. Two games that Fans adored in the past. Revealing this on TGS is further proof of that.

I know this is a lot to ask, but can someone briefly explain why there is so much hate for this character on every message board?

Poorly written. Idiot protagonist because of being poorly written. Flat character outside of 1 to 3 "life changing events", 180 degree changes in personality between games, detailed information not being detailed in the game itself but instead delegated to external media and the ingame version of livejournal. Deemed as popular because Maaya voices her. "Face of Final Fantasy".
Lightning had the potential of being a great character. Too bad they had shitty writers that fucked that up. Big time.
She is not worse than Tidus, Squall or even Cloud, but she is not exactly a good character either. I would guess that people just bundle together every bad decision made when FFXIII was created, and assigned those mistakes to Lightning's face.
I would guess that there are plenty more characters better suited to a solo-type adventure that her, but this is the story of FFXIII, therefore it makes sense to me.
That and she seemed to be solely designed around being a Cloud 2.0, except they spent all their time trying to convince us of how awesome she supposedly is without actually showing us. So when we actually got to play the game she was as you said, just rather flat and boring.
So unlike the more popular characters from the series it feels manufactured rather than actual built up fandom from the game, which to me just ended up being rather poor. That and her creator is obsessed with her.

Because a large portion of the fanbase (as well as/perhaps mostly casual and fair-weather Final Fantasy fans) is tired of Lightning. She wasn't a particularly interesting character to begin with, but between FFXIII and now she's sort of reached Dragonball Z levels of ridiculous power. Also she was introduced by her creator at a press conference where he compared her to a rose. Her new and improved breast size was a bullet point during a Lightning Returns feature presentation. Because of Toriyama's weird fascination with her, she feels more like an action figure being shoved in people's faces than an actual character with any sort of interesting story.
There's also the fact that, even if you don't find her particularly annoying, she's gotten way more screentime than most FF protagonists ever do. She's basically been in the series spotlight since 2008. It's just time to move on.

She is definitely worst than Tidus, Squall, and Cloud. All three characters had a more believable arc and personality. I would argue that she doesn't have a personality other than yelling and indifference.
Tidus has daddy issues and was thrown out of his comfort zone. Put into a world he didn't understand, wanting to go home. He had little to no choice but to join in the cause and in doing so sacrificed his own life to save that world.
Squall is an introverted guy that was abandoned by his father and step sister. Because of that he shuts himself off from the world due to his insecurity.
Cloud is harder to describe. As a child he had self esteem problems and wanted to prove himself to Tifa. Fast forward a few years and he was mortally wounded. He was experimented on and suffered from Mako poisoning. If you add in the self esteem issues with the Mako poisoning and Jehova cells you have Cloud mimicking Zack. There is a huge hole in his persona due to the manipulated memories and that led to Cloud being easily manipulated by Sephiroth via Jehova Cells. He restores his original persona, the one where he had before being experimented on.

Thank you thank you thank you. People act as if they are forced by gunpoint to click on these threads and have nothing better to say then constant complaining. I am really looking forward to this game and so are many others but it's so annoying when most of the posts in a Lightning Returns thread are whining. "Please make it stop", how about you follow your own advice and let those of us anticipating this talk about the merits of the new information in peace?
Anyway, here's to hoping it's good.

Yeah this is extremely wrong. Tidus, Squall and Cloud are much much better characters than Lightning.
Subjective. The games they starred in were definitely better, but their behaviors and personality? To me, nope.
Its probably better that i dont think of this game as a Final Fantasy but as Cosplay Fantasy. I mean you even have the bland non character if you turn off the dialoge you have the perfect silent protagonist to put yourself better into the role as a coseplay hero or even pick one individual costume for the whole game and play it as whoever you wanna be like your own thief, warrior or playboy bunny.

They took out the best part of FFXIII & XIII-2(the party based paradigm shifts), so I wouldn't get your hopes up. As for the story, uh, finish XIII-2 before any explanation makes sense.
Cloud is up for debate, but I'd take Lightning any day over Squall or Tidus. I liked her arc a lot in the original game. XIII-2's another story.
They went to the trouble of creating a new theme song for Lightning, too, to really sell us on how revamped the sequel is.

I'm always curious about Lightning fans, do you actually like the personality of Lightning, not that I see there is much of that if any in her, or do you like her in the "she looks so hot, I want to bone her" kind of way?
I'll admit I liked her looks pre FF13 release, but nope she's not interesting at all for me to care about her after the game.
SE will be doing Tifa's costume, it would be mind blowing if they did pretty much everyone but leave Tifa alone. It might just be DLC or something to dime you guys.

I think if Toriyama performed euthanasia on Lightning, he'd be doing all of us a swell favour.
You can sugar-coat it in fanservice as much as you want SE, but ultimately it boils down to just being another quick-cash-in on your end.

What was her actual arc? Not wanting serah to marry snow turning into being ok with it? Because that's the only development she got.
She did have her "Fuck the Fal'Cie" phase in the first half of the game. Of course, this leads to a bizarre epiphany when she sees Food Fal'Cie ("we're just their pets!"), which in turn leads her to being nicer to Hope just because. But like everyone's character development (excepting the random Eidolon fights), she just becomes an Inspirational Speech Generator for the rest of the game.
