I see there's droughts, but isnt' there always droughts? I dunno of a console that was a 'floodgate' of games.
Whoa, lets not say things we can't take back now
Can you sum up in a sentence how any of those examples could be construed as mismanagement?
Can you construe it as anything else? Can you sum up in a sentence how any of those examples could be construed as mismanagement?
Nah, the only thing that matters is MK8.
Mario Kart Wii sold gangbusters. If MK8 doesn't do shit, the system is fucked.
Well, 2D Mario on Wii did gangbusters...and the Wii U follow up didn't do shit.
Man, you never remember the time when people bought into the 3DO or Jaguar? Those people were treated as failures because they associated themselves with failures.
Why would any kid want to be "uncool" and be associated with an underperforming, undersupported piece of hardware, and which doesn't have a decent version of COD, AC, GTA, Fifa etc coming out for it?
Shit. Don't say that abiut the Vita. I only just bought it 2 days ago.Wii U is commercially dead. As someone who has purchased several failed systems it is a scenario I know all too well.
At least with the Wii U and Vita I knew they were flops when purchased, but I didn't care due to some of the exclusive titles. Some of you are in denial thinking the damn thing will fly off the shelves in the middle of a next-gen launch with all these "eat crow" nonsensical sales scenarios - reminds me of myself when hope sprung eternal for those SEGA platforms I watched die on the vine.
1) thats your opinion
2) when have launches ever had any killer apps. Its usually the exception rather than the rule and it never stopped other systems selling. If you look, normally all the big games come in the next year after launch.
Quoted for truth!no, avoiding the wiiu is a sign of proper management
Lol.Don't judge Wii U until its third christmas!
They make Fifa. And people love that. Plus they gave us Syndicate, and despite the negatitivity, I found myself really enjoying that.Who doesn't think EA is mismanaged? No one cares about them anyway, so that's a terrible point to make.
Absolutely not. This holiday season will be the Wii-U's funeral with XBO/PS4 releasing and the console will be a forgotten memory to the public.
I can confirm that it's not smart telling your co-workers you own a Wii U
Super Mario 3D World could very well cause an upset, but who knows?
I am an adult WiiU owner and I get bullied by my co-workers... Kids are even more mean.
You have several options, I'll focus on two:I can confirm that it's not smart telling your co-workers you own a Wii U

Never been interested in Smash Bros. Ever. This whole idea of people completely forgetting about Wii U next year regardless of how it does these next couple of months is pure malarkey. A new Smash Bros alone is enough to get people to pay attention and realize it is still a system. Not to mention a new Mario Kart on top of that, a new Zelda formally announced next summer, a new Pokemon game (which we have been teased about), and games that are sure to make some sort of splashes like X.
Just because the PS4 and XBONE are coming out does not mean suddenly all of that software (which in the past has sold huge numbers) is going to be ignored. Whether it will translate into better sales is completely up in the air but even if it is the third christmas people will still be paying attention to Wii U next year.
Now, if all of that stuff fails to get people into the system then yes, it is truly over. But hey, at least all of those awesome games will have come out for it (plus others I didn't mention like DK and Bayo 2), which is honestly more than enough to justify my purchase.
And don't forget, DC had Soul Calibur. And it still lost.I don't think the Wii-U will achieve any breakout potential sales at any point in time really, certainly not this holiday anyway. It'll definitely see an uptick in sales for sure, but nothing that would be considering game changing.
Mario Kart and Smash are really the last bastions of hope. I don't really see anything saving the console, but those will be the games to wrap things up. I mean Christ, its losing to Dreamcast in the US!
I want Nintendo to continue as a 3rd party developer.I really hope the WiiU does well. My son is 3 and I want/need Nintendo to be around for him when he gets older like the NES was around for me when I was a kid. A system with good wholesome games. There is definitely a market for this.
Zombie U looks like shit. I saw it before the Wii U was even released and just laughed. It looks as good/bad as a Xbox 360 launch title circa 8 years ago.You have several options, I'll focus on two:
1. Invite them to play Zombi U or TW101, and mock them if they can't cope with the hardcore. More likely: these games will change their mind.
2. Invite them with their wife to a dinner and launch Artworks from Game & Wario. You will all have a blast. Proceed with Spin the bottle if you hope for something special.
Bullies are ignorant people, you've got to teach them.
Syndicate was really good.Junior be a trollin'!
Never been interested in Smash Bros. Ever.
Which is why Nintendo can't (and shouldn't) compete in the hardware sector anymore. They should go 3rd party as they clearly aren't able to fulfil expectations as a hardware manufacturer.I don't know about sales-age numbers, but personally some of the things I'm seeing is making it more and more difficult to stay away. That Mario 3D land is looking pretty ridiculous.
But as a primary or solitary console? It's just not competing at that level.
Sales? Sales wise, Smash Bros will generate a small blip, but will never be able to turn around the Wii U's ailing fortunes.Frankly I don't care what you are interested in or not. The average person remotely into video games is interested in and enjoys Smash Bros. That's all that matters if we are talking about sales, not your personal preferences.

THQ was losing money. If the conditions for good management is to make money, then Nintendo is doing fine. But as a hardware vendor whose job (and responsibility) it is to provide a platform with ample software support, then Nintendo are doing poorly. If these are the necessary conditions for good management then even fucking THQ was doing fine.
Quoted for posterity, smash is very much one of those "cool" franchises you go on about.
Which is why Nintendo can't (and shouldn't) compete in the hardware sector anymore. They should go 3rd party as they clearly aren't able to fulfil expectations as a hardware manufacturer.
Smash may be "cool", but it's not cool enough. It's no GTA or COD.
1. Agree. It's too expensive. The system needs Mario Kart. It needed it at launch. Given the complete 180 on the controller, that is the game to pull Wii owners onto the new platform. But it may be too late even for that now.
I don't see anything fundamentally changed this holiday season that would allow the system to "break out". There's still no mass appeal for the system itself. One, because of the high price. Second because the controller paradigm is not only alien to former Wii owners, but of questionable value in general. And the games that will come out between now and December are not so different from the games that are already out that they could draw in a whole new type of customer.
The system simply does not compare favourably against a 199$ PS3. The new consoles will only make it harder.
The Wii U is almost completely locked into a destiny of being a second or third console.
Reggie stated that Nintendo got burnt (really badly) when Nintendo did try to compete on a tech level.Nope. Disagree. Nintendo can compete just fine at tech parity if they choose to. They didn't choose to this time and they hamstrung the system price to an expensive peripheral control method. Those were the mistakes, not some inability to deliver a compelling console experience for a good price. Gamecube competed just fine during that generation tech-wise.
They somehow forgot that part of the success of the Wii was $250 price tag with a packed in game.
The only sales-age thing I'll say is that I think their best case scenario is Gamecube numbers, just because their console is just not seen as mainstream. Which is quite the contrast from the Wii's mainstream appeal, but instead of doubling down on the waggle and improving it, they went back to a standard controller but slapped a tablet into the middle of it. Alienating the grandmas and not really grabbing the core.
I get that ipads are popular but they definitely had the wrong take-away from that market research to console creation.
Amazon top 10 best selling games chart disagrees. Fact.Lol.
There is no series I know as universally loved by people my age (18-24) as Smash. Only GTA and Halo come close and Halo's been taking a beating since 3.
Nobody likes to look like a fool. That person who got a $700 console may have thought he/she was all bling, but the other kids would have laughed as the 3DO owner definitely didn't have street smarts or common sense.Serious question based on this and all your subsequent posts: how old are you? Very curious.
Also, if you weren't around for 3D0, you should know that that kid who got a $700.00 console in addition to everything else wasn't shunned or bullied.
Reggie stated that Nintendo got burnt (really badly) when Nintendo did try to compete on a tech level.
Going forward, Nintendo had no choice but to offer over-inflated hardware.

How is Smash "universally loved" when it's not even in the top 10? And it's not a limited snapshot. These were the best selling games OF ALL TIME.Is conflating "cool" with a limited snapshot of amazon sales wired into your programming or something?
Sony is profitable on the PS4 after one game and plus.Hmm, yeah that's possibly true due to the fact that Nintendo can't subsidize gaming losses with other departments in their corporation like the other 2.
Not sure what Nintendo can do then. They probably should have doubled down on the waggle and improved the accuracy, maybe added a PS-EYE type camera system in addition to the waggle for incredible accuracy.
That tablet controller for a really expensive price was a mistake though. PS4 is going to be not much more expensive than Wii-U and even a system like PS3 still looks like a better bargain because of how many games you can get on the cheap.
$300 for essentially last gen tech when next gen tech is coming in at $400...not good.
Quoted for truth!WiiU had its chance last year. This holiday's lineup is nothing to write home about, and that's before you account for two HUGE console launches.
How is Smash "universally loved" when it's not even in the top 10? And it's not a limited snapshot. These were the best selling games OF ALL TIME.

Now am I wrong in assuming that at best Nintendo may rekindle sales in North America? Seems the sales in Japan and Europe are essentially completely dead and we shouldn't expect much.
Iwata says Wii will avoid major droughts that plagued GameCube. (March 2007)
When we launched GameCube, the initial sales were good, and all the hardware we manufactured at that time were sold through. However, after this period, we could not provide the market with strong software titles in a timely fashion. As a result we could not leverage the initial launch time momentum, and sales of GameCube slowed down. To avoid repeating this with Wii, we have been intensifying the software development, both internally at Nintendo and at developers outside the company, in order to prepare aggressive software lineup for Wii at and after the launch. says Iwata. He then says, We believe it is important to provide the market with strong software without a long interval in order to keep the launch time momentum."
Iwata promises that 3DS will avoid major droughts that plagued Wii and DS.
Its important that you be able to supply software with no pause, said Iwata. With the DS and Wii, following the titles that were released at launch, the momentum dropped when there was a gap in software releases. Were making plans so that this type of thing wont happen.
Iwata promises that Wii U will avoid major droughts that plagued 3DS and Wii.
As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch.
The company was unable to launch much-anticipated first-party titles for the Wii nor for the Nintendo 3DS in a timely fashion in the first half of the term. In the game platform business, creating momentum is very important, but the momentum was once lost, and it has had a large negative effect on our sales and profits.
Iwata apologizes for Wii U drought in January and February.
I apologize to those supporting Wii U about the lack of titles in January and February.
