Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I wish someone would make a damn Dual Soundbar Set-up that would connect the rear speakers and sub woofer wirelessly. I just can't stand looking at those wires.
i seen only wireless subs but no wireless rear speakers. I would get that for the living room.

I have a 7.1 setup in the entertainment room.

I'm envious :P Unfortunately my mind is too OCD about simple solutions. I absolutely love the elegance of a soundbar + wireless sub. Imagine a 3 speaker soundbar in the front, then a 2 speaker soundbar in the back that you could angle to bounce off a wall if it were floor mounted behind your couch, or just push outward, so if you had it on a stand of some sort.

It'll happen someday :(

Just bought the 50S60. Can somebody congratulate me so I don't feel as bad for my wallet? :P

PSHT, your wallet thanks you. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but it seems like there is no better TV per dollar on the market. I just shelled $650 for a 50 INCH PLASMA. Honestly, it doesn't get better :P

Before I moved to our new house, when I finished the basement, I wired the HT for 7.2...

I can't wait to work on the space I have now...

No kidding. I paid more than $2000 for my current 50" plasma six years ago, and it's only 720p (well 768p I guess).

I will hopefully be buying a 55" S60 before they disappear for less than half of what I paid before.

heading to reno on sat to look at sets in person. this close to black friday, should i bother waiting to take the plunge, or have we already seen whats likely to be reduced? what are the odds of further reductions on the panasonic s60 or st60 models?

Bought a 50 inch S60 from amazon. Was on sale for $650 and then I had 50 credit. But it was supposed to come today, but was delayed for delivery, so they gave me $100 credit. I think the extra wait is OK.

LOL man that's awesome. I love Amazon, they don't bullshit with customer satisfaction. I appreciate their approach to situations like that.

Off topic, I ordered the Uncharted 2 game of the year PS3 bundle for black friday some years back. They shipped me the regular copy of U2, so I politely asked if I miss-read something, extremely promptly, they sent me the code for the Digital DLC, then gave me $20 off my next purchase. It was awesome :P

Anyone have experience with the Vizio M501D-A2R (or 55" variant)? CNET has it rated pretty highly for an LED-LCD, only falling short of the Panasonic Plasmas in its rating/size category. I know the 50S60/S64 Panasonic is the go-to TV here for IQ and low input lag, but I know they are getting harder to find and are not as cheap as maybe once were. So, for a 50" set, I've been looking at Sony, Vizio, and Samsung, and it seems to me to either consider the Vizio or Sony equivalent (KDL50R550A @ ~$700 w/ some employee discounts).

I ask because Best Buy is offering it during BF for $599, and I have ~$200 in GC/RZ credit to BB I could sink into it. I'm also Elite Plus, so I get BF early access on Monday.

Thanks.

Just set up my F6640.
Holy shit that thing is good '.
Lade some quick settings but I must say that I'm deeply impressed by the black levels and the overall contrast and punch of the display, even as a VT20 owner.

I can't find it in Amazon. What is it and what price?

lol literally just bought the 55" last night. I'm very happy with my purchase so far. Spent a few hours messing with various color settings and found ones that I liked. For some reason all the ones I found online gave off a yellowish tint which was annoying, but I guess the skin tones were "natural..." go figure. Very happy with the PQ, it's miles better than the 7 yr old vizio it's replacing.

Unfortunately I sold my 360 so i can't report on game mode and the lag, but from what I've read there shouldn't be any issues. When i get my xb1 tomorrow i'll let you know how it fairs.

I'm buying a 45-55in TV on Cyber Monday at Wal-Mart. I will need it for PC gaming (have a high end PC) and PS3/PS4. The room I'll put it in is my bedroom and I always keep it dark, shades always down, and only use my desk lamp for light.

So what should I be looking to buy?

Definitely getting 120hz.....other than that I'm not sure.

Plasma, LED, or LCD?

SmartTV? 3D?

Soundbar needed?

Pls help

cool, thanks. Just need to look up some reviews.
It's the highest model of the middle range of samsung's this year line up. Big point is the micro dimming. Offers many if not nearly all the features of the highest models.
Got it for around 500€ here.

Too much information to dole out. Don't spend extra for smart TV. You're a poster on gaf, you probably won't use those features. Is 3D gaming important to you? What size are you looking for?

Just got the Sony w900a. Is there any good settings for this tv. First HDTV in 7 years and it has settings that I just don't know what they do.

Took fifteen minutes to go check out some of the Samsung 55-65 inch LED models at Best Buy, and the ghosting in the cheaper models seems unfortunate (and pushes me more into thinking a plasma would be a better bet).

Also saw my first 4K demonstration, and that was super pretty (but not spend $5,500 with no content for the format pretty).

Speaking of sound bars, I need one now. Can someone direct me to a decent set preferably under 150 dollars?

I don't know of one for that cheap, but I've been eyeballing this beauty.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E3AKF1C/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's got a wireless sub-woofer, HDMI in, HDMI ARC out, and bluetooth connectivity, for music streaming and what have you. Of course, with the price of this guy dropping so much, I'd save a little more and hop on this.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C25I5TE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

3 HDMI in, bluetooth, support for Dolby True HD, DTS Master audio, NFC pairing, and I think I read somewhere that this one has tweeters inside the bar for better highs. Also has a wireless sub-woofer and what-not :P

You should put that 150 towards a new receiver or set of bookshelf speakers. Soundbars are awful. My 2.0 setup cost about 280 and it sounds really good.
Soundbars are for the most part awful if you are spending below $1000

Sonos Playbar + Sub is about $1500 and sounds amazing

Did you try Cnets settings? I'm going to bounce between that and the WOW disc to see what my preference is.

Also, how long have you owned the display? The phosphors take around (150-200) hours to "settle" (or so I've read).

Also! What is your reference? What TV did you own before?

I'm using Cnets settings for everything that is movie and tv related. I've stopped trying to get a good image form the WOW Bluray when it got to a point that Cnets setting were pretty much exactly the same thing but with even more editing which only expert tools could do. For video games tho, it just doesn't make the games justice, it looks pretty much washed up. Though like you said, the phosphors most likely havn't settled to its maximum potential yet since I just had my TV about 3 weeks ago.

I only had a 32" Sharp Aquos before, which was actually pretty darn good for video games.

Does it out perform $1500 worth of AVR, Towers, and Sub? No it doesn't. Does it even outperform a separates system even half its price? Probably not. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say soundbars are either awful sounding, an awful value, or both.

Be sure to select Game mode to get that low input lag:
Options button > Scene Select > Game

Backlight: Your preference
Picture: Max
Brightness: 50
Color: 50
Hue: 0
Color Temperature: Your preference, I use Warm2
Sharpness: 50
Everything below: Off
Advanced:
Gamma: 0 for games, -2 for movies and TV
LED Dynamic Control: Low
Live Color: Low
Everything else: Off
White Balance: (Taken from C-Net -- meant for Warm2)
R-Gain: 0
G-Gain: -3
B-Gain: -6
R-Bias: 0
G-Bias: 0
B-Bias: +1

I recommend turning off the light sensor, which adjusts the backlighting according to the room's ambient light:
Home button > Settings > Preferences > Eco > Light Sensor: Off

To turn off overscan:
Home button > Settings > Picture & Display > Screen
Wide Mode: Full
Auto Wide: Off
Auto Display Area: Off
Display Area: Full Pixel

I've been doing a little HDTV searching for a new 32'in. I looked online and lots of people are saying that when getting a 32'in, 1080p doesn't really matter. Something that has to do with the difference of 1080p and 720p isn't shown great enough on such a small display.

So is a 1080p TV really not worth it? Should I just got with a new 720p instead (would save a ton of money in doing so but I still want the best display)?

Hey thanks for the input. Let me know what you think with the X1 hooked up. I just got a PS4 and my 4+ year old 42" Insignia isn't doing it justice. I've mostly been looking at the bigger name brands (Sony, Samsung) but was surprised by the reviews for this Vizio. I'd be happy to hear more impressions.

I think it just depends on how close you plan to be to the TV. On a 32", the difference between 1080p and 720p is marginal in most cases. I actually have a 32" Samsung I purchased last year that is 720p. It was between that one and a 1080p 32" Samsung, and after looking at them closely side-by-side with different inputs (movies, sports, etc.), I didn't see much of a difference in clarify (other than the 1080p sported some better motion stabilization and what-not intrinsic to its higher price tag, but still images looked nearly identical). Now I am sitting maybe 5-6 feet away from the 32" (its a bedroom TV) and image clarity has never bothered me at 720p.

$1500 worth of towers, avr, and sub probably won't net anything of any real worth in the long run though. At least as far as my personal tastes go, opinions obviously will differ lol

Anyways I don't believe there is a universal standard for what "value" consists of. Especially when it comes to A/V

Thanks a bunch man, I'll definitely set this up and try out now.

Why are plasmas so fucking weighty? UGH. I was reading into all of the hype with the VT60, only to find out that its nigh impossible for me to get one shipped to my APO due to the weight. FML and the price was damn good too.

The Sony W900A looks decent for LCDs, is it really that big a step down from Plasmas?

No.

Except if it's Sony's new interpolation-free low-latency Motionflow Impulse.
It is very videogame friendly, and turns LCD motion blur into plasma-like motion clarity, while still having less input lag than most plasmas -- it adds less than one extra frame of input lag, in exchange for plasma motion clarity in GAME MODE.

www.blurbusters.com/sony-motionflow-impulse

The liquid crystals still have to twist and untwist, and that requires a non-zero amount of time, which introduces a natural smearing effect in moving scenes that cannot be defeated even with the most perfect motion compensation that exists today as it's fundamental to the technology.

I should add that some people have complained about how the backlight strobing is implemented with Motionflow Impluse results in noticeable flickering. It's strobing only at 60hz and if you've ever viewed a CRT at 60hz refresh you know how headache-inducing the flickering can be at that refresh. The ideal situation would be to strobe the backlight at 120hz (two blinks per refresh) to avoid this problem.

A plasma has phosphors which can be turned on and off instantly like a CRT. It can have absolutely perfect natural motion resolution that cannot be matched by any other flat-panel technology except OLED. And modern plasmas do not have observable flicker, I am very sensitive to flicker and 60hz CRTs used to drive me crazy, I have not noticed any flickering from my VT60.

Woohoo, it's here.
Calibrated it quite a bit, and I'm glad I went for this model.
Very good sharpness, nice contrast and black levels, and the media capabilities are astounding. Came with Netflix installed and all, took me by surprise.

The set in itself is lovely, very small and well designed, can't wait to hang it on the wall, the frame is so thin.

Tonight I should get the W1070 ... what a week :D
