Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I might buy a new TV , anyone know if KDL-70R550A is good? Is 120hz and 240hz a huge difference? I don't even know what they do. How are the contrast compared to Plasmas?

Edit : Found out about the 120hz and 240hz, thought it was something "different".

I just took the plunge! I got the Sony w900a. I am so excited I could sit in a lawn chair wearing nothing but orange socks in the middle of Times Square singing and smiling. Ok, that may be too extreme... So forget the socks.
On a serious note.. I can't wait to put this bad boy in my man lair!

I'm bouncing around these models

  • Sony KDL-55W802A
  • Samsung UN55F7100
  • VIZIO M551d-A2R
  • Sony KDL-55W900A

Obviously the Sony KDL-55W900A is the best choice out of those four but I am rethinking about my 2k budget I gave myself. Blah, so many choices lol. The Vizio TV looks tempting but I hear that the remote is unresponsive at times. Boo on the Sony TVs not having a back-lit remote. The Samsung TV have that "white cloud" effect when the screen is black.

Does anyone know how the input lag is for the Sammy and Vizio?

I've been researching the Vizio and the Samsung a lot and with a $1k budget I'm probably going to buy the 55'' Vizio today. It seems to have a robust feature set with a very sleek design and a competitive price. It's a good, not great TV but is set in a price bracket that makes it hard to match it seems. The biggest con I've seen is the same one you've noted, the remote. I also really wish it had a swivel stand as my room configuration would benefit from that a lot. Do you know anything about this TV that's 900 at the moment from Samsung?

Well in PC mode Leo Bodnar measures 62ms, and supposedly this test is inaccurate for plasmas, so it's actually probably something like 40ms. This matches up more with what rtings gives, which is 37.5ms. I guess that should be fine, although it's annoying that I can't give my input a useful name.

I'm leaning towards the F8500 right now, particularly because of the insane Black Friday price drop, and the fact that its picture quality is comparable to a Panasonic ZT60 (and having 4 HDMIs is really nice), but if the input lag is unbearable I'll just return it.

Edit: Gah, now I'm having second thoughts again. Maybe I should scratch plasma entirely. The Sony 55" W900A is looking nice as well, and it's 40% off right now.

Depends what driving method Samsung uses. The S60 uses the old 600Hz focus field drive which the Bodnar seems to probably read accurately. The faster Focus Field 3000 the VT/ZT use is believed to produce too many sub frames for the Bodnar to register and accurately measure. If Samsung's still using an older 600Hz variant, the Bodnar could be accurate (or vice versa) The VT/ZT in actual use could very well be faster than the S60.

Well I ordered an ST60 and hopefully I'll be able to compare it to my w802a next Friday or Monday to compare the lag if anybody cares.

If anyone knows of a good Canadian deal for that TV to price match let me know. 50"

I tried several PS2 games when I got my UT50 last year, both running on 60GB Ps3 (at various output resolutions from 480p to 1080p) and on original Ps2 connected via RGB Scart, with the tv doing in this case deinterlancing and scaling.

Ps3 doesn't output 480i via hdmi in any case; it internally deinterlaces and then eventually outputs 480p or whatever resolution you have your dashboard set at if you check the option.

Interestingly, I found input lag to be substantially the same either way, and quite noticeable to me and annoying. I ended keeping the Ps2 connected to my crt.
Please also note that European UT50 is estimated at 16ms so it adds very little lag by itself.

PS3 playing PS2 games using the now-defunct BC introduce about 5-6 frames of lag because of how it buffers frames for the deinterlacing and upscaling process. BC on PS3 was bad. That's the lag you were seeing.

Panasonic is getting out of the plasma business, right? I move out in February, but I really want an S60. Do you guys think it would be too risky to wait that long and be able to find one? I probably wouldn't hook it up (aside from testing it) until then.

I have a Sony KDL-40EX720 and it is by far, the best TV I have ever owned. The colors are accurate, the blacks are deep, and it supports 3D and 120hz content.

After turning off all of the post-processing features in the TV settings (noise reduction, MPEG noise reduction, dot noise reduction, edge enhancer, etc.), there is virtually no noticeable lag. I play Hatsune Miku Project Diva F (a game with extremely demanding timing) with 0 TV lag adjustment. CNet will concur, as the Sony KDLs have the lowest lag of the HDTVs they tested.

Although many posters are still adamant about plasma televisions, the Sony LED LCDs are also very good for gaming and better for the environment.

I heard that the Sony W900A tvs are not very good at angles is this true? I have a plasma today and when folks come over they sometimes will have some pretty steep angles while watching my TV and as a result I'm glad I have my current plasma. I'm interested in the W900A models due to their super awesome input lag and good PQ.

Should I just say nope and go with a Panasonic TC-P60VT60?

Getting really tired of having to white wash my plasma for burn-in. Thinking of getting an LED and just paying the extra for Best Buy's Garrus Calibration service. I saw a comparison and it was virtually indistinguishable from plasma quality.

the w802a has terrible viewing angles in my opinion and I assume it's the same almost.

Am I the only one who sees really bad pixelation on these? Like I can see the sqaures in the screen from 7 feet away. I only don't notice this on the w900a. Which I gladly bought today. :)

I've had the Panasonic S60 for a few months now. It's great so far. So I plan on either building a gaming PC or waiting for the steambox, either way I'm getting into PC gaming. I want to hook it up to my TV, but I'm a little worried about the input lag. I don't plan on playing any first person shooters online and most of the games I play are single player.
Anyone play PC games on their S60?

Just got my Sony Bravia 42W655A and I'm really impressed with it.

I'm still calibrating the image to my taste, but here are some pictures of it showing different sources.

What camera settings did you use for these shots

It's not as much.

It's 33 ms, 2 frame lag. Even if it were 3 frame lag it would be 50 ms.

5-6 frames lag would amount to 83.5 ms or 100 ms lag on top of the original game's input lag, which is pretty far out there.

Never 5-6 frames. It only adds up all the way to that your TV is really slow and you're bundling it into this process (which really shouldn't happen).

PS2 on PS3 be lagged, nonetheless; something nobody complained back then and would complain today fosure.

I'm looking at getting a Panasonic ST60 50' for $800 with using an employee discount on top of the Black Friday deal on the Panasonic website.

Worth it?

As far as I understand it that doesn't actually help with burn or image retention at all.

The 100 hour slide fest is to optimize the display for a certain set of settings, but I guess you can use them to speed up the first few hundred hours of the display's life to reduce chances of serious IR. I just use the screen wiper from time to time, just to be safe.

But after a week with a VT60 it doesn't look like IR will be an issue at all.

I have a stupid, stupid question for fellow W900a owners.

I've been looking since I got it shortly after it came out and have not found it yet....

Where is the power button. On the television, i mean. Is there one? I seriously can't find it.

Finally pulled the trigger on the Sony 55w900a. Can't wait until it gets here Thursday. I have a few questions maybe someone can help me out with. What's the best way to check for clouding, flashlighting, screen uniformity, etc.?

Another questions I have and I know its subjective, but can anyone recommend me some settings I can try out? Also, what setting do you use for your PS4 and Xbox One? If you use them for Blu-ray viewing as well, do you need to use different settings for when you game and for when you view movies? Any info would help.

Nothing helps with burn in because actual burn-in is permanent image retention, but providing it is just persistent IR... of course it does.

Image retention is nothing more than excited (and often non broken-in) phosphor that stayed too much time in one position; so of course interpolating between things helps... a lot.

It ensures the phosphor will get the rotation it needs in the future and it ensues it's not happening, and if it happened it's clearing up.

Left end of the TV, near the USB ports, small black square button. I am basing this off the W800 though, so might be wrong!

So I cancelled my order from this store in NYC for the Sony KDL 42w654, they had me waiting 19 days already.

Anybody know how I can this T.V. in the U.S? Doesn't have to be that specific model, it just has to be the 42 inch W6 series.

To check for clouding & other imperfections, in a pitch dark room, turn off the Smart LED dimming features & set the backlight of the to max & try looking at a all black or grey screen.

This site has some calibrated settings

Technically they are different. You can't get a local dimming set with regular LCD CCFL bulbs.
R|The correct comparison would be LED vs CCFL vs Plasma vs OLED, but who the heck say's CCFL LCD?

I think his problem is that it should either say Plasma, LCD, OLED

or

Plasma, CCFL LCD, LED LCD, OLED.

or Plasma, CCFL, LED, OLED.

I notice black lines, like scan lines. Is that what you mean?

Are you talking about the w802a?

I've been using an old Samsung 32" from 2007 for gaming. It's still pretty good but I've been wanting to finally go 1080p ever since I got a PS4.

Best Buy (Canada) has a Samsung 46" [LED, 1080p, 60Hz] on sale for $499. I saw it in-store and it looked pretty good. Thing is, they had it displayed next to a Sony 42" [LED, 1080p, 120Hz, Smart TV] for $699. I'm kinda torn because the Sony was so smooooooth, but it's $200 more expensive and a bit smaller. At the same time, I don't really need that Smart TV stuff right now though. There's also a Panasonic Viera 50" [LED, 1080p, 120Hz] for $699. It looked pretty good too.

I don't know. I haven't bought a TV in a while and I'm just looking for ideas (on what to look for), options, opinions, etc. Thanks!

Guyyyss..

I need help.

A retailer is having 25% off tvs and thinking of getting 1 today, however i dont know what to get.

Im aiming for 50-55" Sony/Samsung but dont think i'd mind the 47" that im about to list below.

I just want something good for gaming (ps3/ps4) and watching movies.
I know ive asked this before but still unsure what Hz Screen Refresh Rate is and if it matters to gaming.

whats motionflow?

whats motionflow?

Motionflow is Sony name for motion interpolation. when turned on, gives video a 60 fps soap opera effect & increase motion resolution.
As far as those sets, pretty much all Sony & Samsung sets are the same panels, with the same contrasts.
The extras are also the cause for the higher prices for some o fthe smaller sized sets.. Do you want to spend more for 3D capability, "smart" apps, internet connectivity & more HDMI inputs for basically the same panel.

Go to a store & compare them for yourself before buying.

Posted this in the black friday thread but anyone if this is a good deal:

Sharp 60” Class Aquos 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV – LC60LE452U - 749 at Sears.com

Already have a 47" LG Smart 3D Tv (i know the Sharp isnt SmartTV) but wanted a bigger size. I dont need the Smart tv stuff with PS4 now.

Can you turn off motionflow? I am NOT a fan of that soap opera effect at all.
Do the samsung tv's have that same thing (and if so, can it be turned off)?

I tried going into a store a couple weeks back and could not tell the difference to be honest.

I think I may have come down to 2 tvs.

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/tv-h...series-7-3d-capable-full-hd-smart-led-tv.html
55" series 7

http://www.harveynorman.com.au/tv-h...series-6-full-hd-led-3d-capable-smart-tv.html
55" series 6.

By comparing these 2 models on the samsung site, I didnt see much difference with them to be honest. And yes, I could not give a fluff about "3D capability, "smart" apps, internet connectivity" But its pretty much impossible to get newer tvs without this crap nowadays.

The only clear differences i can see between those 2 models is
the 7 series has:
http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/...mpare?prda=UA55F7100AMXXY&prdb=UA55F6400AMXXY

"Ultra Clear Panel " - Could i get further explanation on what this is/means

"Clear Motion Rate" of 600 compared to 400 for the 6 series - Again, need an explanation on this. Will 600-400 make a difference or is it only this high because of the 3D?
What would the ideal be for blu ray movies (non 3d) and games (ps3/ps4/etc..)?

"SRS / DNSe+ " series 7 : TruSurround,TheaterSound vs series 6 DTS Studio Sound

"Sound customizer" - ????

"Sound Output (RMS)" 20W (10 x 2) compared to 10W x 2. Does this just mean like how some tvs volume 10 is another tvs volume 60? (if that makes sense to you)

"Multi tasking" - series 7 has 'yes' option , series 6 doesnt even say no... confused about that.

"MHL" series 7 "yes", series 6 "no"

"InstaPort S (HDMI quick switch) " Yes (7) , No (6)

and thats about it.

Sorry for the questions, but when you are gonna blow this much money, you wanna know if the $600 difference is worth it or not.

EDIT: 1 more question, input lag. Will i be having issues with these tvs?

EDIT 2: Or should i scrap both samsungs and get this sony tv?

Motion Flow can be turned off in Samsung TVs. I basically turn off all that stuff and it looks way better.
