Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Sadly the display is not the same, which is by design from Sony. The W900A is the exact same display as their 4k line minus the 4k. Hear me out. While this seems to be a silly suggestion to make the fact of the matter is the amount of 4k content out there atm is exceedingly slim. If the 850A was a 900A display, no one in their right mind would pick up a 4k set. As it stands the 850A is using the display that is in the 802A, not the display in the 900A. Least that is the conclusion that I have made after spending a few hours with the displays and reading threads on AVS.

Now do not get me wrong, the 850A is still a quality set it just is not on the same level as the 900A.

That's unfortunately to hear especially since the 900A only comes in 55" and nothing bigger :(

Unless you have something against Samsung just get one of the bigger f8000 LCDs. Extremely comparable in almost every respect.

Motion resolution
Input lag

correct.

I have been using samsungs for a while and they seem to be getting worse with the banding abd clouding.

My unit has it pretty bad on the blacks and they kinda burned me with their smart TV, mine is dog slow (UI). (on 3 different TV's)

Motion resolution and interpolation is superior (but comparable) on the f8000 relative to the w900. Input lag is slightly better on the w900 but f8000 firmware was just updated and feels faster than the 40ms it used to be. It also has an upgradeable processor (and inputs) so has the potential to be much faster. There is no banding or clouding on the f8000 unless you crank up the brightness to triple the recommended standard in a dark room.

Build quality for the f8000 incredibly high. After looking at many, MANY tvs it is the most "apple-like" in terms of build, quality and fit and finish.

Are you sure about this? The 850A and 900A both have the Triluminos display, whereas the 802A doesn't. From what I read, the 850A and 900A share the same display, but the 900A is 240Hz and the 850A is 120Hz.

I just picked up an 802A and it's a great set. Wanted the 900A but couldn't pass up the deal I got for the 802A. Still considering upgrading if the right deal comes around.

Get the ST60. Its a big enough jump that unless your looking at the 60" model the price gap isn't wide enough to justify going with the S60

If you're gaming a lot on it, the unfortunate truth is that the input lag on the ST60 is pretty damned noticeable. I'm pretty insensitive to lag compared to a lot of my friends, and I noticed the lag when I was playing Mario 3D World on a friend's ST60. We switched to playing UMvC3 for a bit, and it was incredibly noticeable then.

It's a shame too, because otherwise I would totally agree. Even at my target 60" size, the 3D option alone would have pushed me over to the ST60, but knowing how much I use the set for games, I just couldn't do it. I even thought about stepping further up to the VT60, since that's reported to have about half the input lag of the ST60 (although still not quite as low as the S60), but I just couldn't justify the massive difference in price.

In any case, it'll be interesting to see how I feel about my new TV once i have it all set up and ready to go. It's not quite a side-by-side comparison, but I've spent a lot of time with my friend's ST60 to compare.

Grabbed a Sony 50W685 yesterday. It has less motion resolution than my previous HX803, but I'll accept that for the lower input lag, the larger size and the price. Only needs to tide me over until OLED and/or 4k comes down in price. Also I literally can't fit anything bigger in my AV cabinet - I have about 1cm clearance on either side

Did he have the right settings off/on to reduce the lag? Just turning game mode on doesn't do a good job by itself.

The 850A does have the Tri display, just like the 900A. However, it does not have the deep black panel or the same motionflow/240Hz display. Again the 850A is a great TV, but it is not the same display as the 900A.

The salesman at Best Buy was just telling me that the displays on the W900A and the 850A are the same, so I'm curious as to which answer is correct. Edit: I see this was answered as I took my time typing this up, nevermind!

Also curious if we have any Best Buy people here- do the salespeople work on commission? I'm either going to order through Amazon or my local Best Buy as the salesperson was helpful, but I want to know if the employees get tracked on making sales or anything like that.

Edit: Thanks BreakyBoy!

Yeah, all the post-processing was turned off. We're both IT/CS people, so we at least know enough to do that.

Mind you, it wasn't unbearable/unplayable or anything. At least, I didn't think so. I have noticed that I'm less sensitive to lag than others though.

I worked at Best Buy many years ago, but I'm pretty sure this still applies: they don't work on commission, but it is likely that they do some sort of tracking on sales. However, it's more likely they track accessory/warranty purchases and credit card sign ups more so than the actual value/quantity of TVs sold by the employee.

Best Buy employees do not work on commission, however Magnolia employee's do*. Which is where you will be buying the 850A or 900A display.

*Edit. This is assuming you buy it from BB of course. I have a great friend who has worked at the Magnolia store near me for a long time, which is who I bought the 900A from (so he could get the commission).

Good stuff. It's strange, you'd think game modes would turn all the processing things off by default...

Ah, gotcha.

So I'm sold on the VT60... question is, Best Buy (through Magnolia) or Amazon Prime? Will be getting it delivered either way.

That depends on additional factors.

Do you have a Amazon or BB credit card? If so I would go with that option if you want to get 2-3 years same as cash.

If you are paying cash or putting it on a different charge card I would purchase through Amazon. They have far better customer service than Best Buy.

I had a BB card (3yr same as cash), picked up $100 in-store credit for the TV purchase (reward zone), plus the friend factor I can get superb support through him at the Magnolia store.

Wait what? I never had any issues with my 8000 series plasma. I had had bunch of IR with the GT that I had previously. There was still some with the VT series as well, and I decided to make the switch to Sammy, and I haven't looked back...
I'll presume Samsung has alleviated the issue by now, but they used to be real bad with IR, though.

I have had 2 TVs delivered from Amazon. 1 from CEVA Logistics and 1 from Pilot. The service from Pilot was shitty, CEVA was not. Both TVs arrived without a scratch and in perfect working condition. Despite the recent experience with Pilot I would still rather deal with that than Best Buy just because Amazon's customer service is better when it comes to resolving problems.

Just replaced my 50" Sammy plasma with a Sharp Aquos 70". I really like the picture quality, which is a drastic improvement for my apartment because of the matte screen compared to the plasma's glossy screen. I haven't noticed any light bleed or issues with black levels. I am very happy with the purchase, and because it was an old model, I was able to grab it for $1400 at BestBuy.

Excuse the messy wiring. This was right after I got it up on the wall.

Hey all, apologies if this not the right topic, I searched and it seems like this is my best option.

I have a Panasonic TH-42PX600u Plasma TV that I need to sell, but I'm not sure what I should sell it for. The lowest used price on Amazon is 600 and there's one local pickup on Ebay for 200/400. Normally I'd just let it go for cheap since it's pretty old and I assume I can't get much for it, but from what I've read it's one of the better plasma TVs made and now I'm wondering if I should try to get a little more out of it.

Thoughts? Much appreciated.

What's the best movie to show experience my ST60 for the first time?

I was thinking either Avatar 3D or How to Train Your Dragon 3D.

Thoughts?

Do the plasma owners in here time their gameplay sessions on their already broken-in displays? I'm thinking ahead and wondering if I sit down with a new game that I intend to dedicate a day to playing if I'll have to tell myself after X amount of hours I should probably switch it up. That's literally my only concern holding me back from the VT60 purchase as I read a few upset people post about image retention on the avsforum.com thread for VT60 owners, which now has me a little gun-shy.

I'm sure there are plenty of plasma owners in here who bought their displays specifically for gaming (my main motivation) so I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this.

I picked this budgeted tv at amazon. Samsung UN46EH5300 46-Inch 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV (Black) for $470.00. Hopefully, it's a decent tv at that price?

Have yet to watch a 3D movie on my ST60 but if you want a black level eyegasm check out The Dark Knight Rises and/or Sin City.

What model do you have? I am looking to get the Sharp LC-70LE550U but there is no info on it in terms of gaming. Looking at other 70 inchers at DisplayLag but Sharp rate them as Bad.

Ive had my plasma for 6 years now and never did the break in thing or worried about what i was watching/playing. Never had any issue with burn in, i have left the tv on for hours on a static screen and never had burn in.

lovely. really looking forward to more setup pics as people get their TVs in. can't wait to show off mine.

I am confused between these 2:

Panny vt60

Sammy 7050

My main uses:
Gaming
Movies
Smart TV features
Netflix, AMZ, hulu, DLNA etc

Which one would be better as an overall TV for these functions ignoring price. Would like some input from folks here thnx

one more week till we get our new 60" s60 set! cant wait! wife is already talking about how maybe we should have bit the bullet from panasonic direct and got the 65". i love her.

I prefer Panasonic to Samsung. And the VT60 is one of the best reviewed TVs ever by CNET so...

That's what I have been reading. How are the smart tv features on Panny compared to Sammy? Is it close enough. Also is the burn-in of plasma's gone now? That's one of the thing that keeps me from getting a plasma.

Burn is as rare as something going wrong on an LED set.

To the smart features I can't personally comment but you could read the CNET reviews, sorry :x

I prefer the better PQ to those features myself.

Man. my only concern with the VT60 is the weight at a whopping 80lbs. Plus, I'm doing a move about 5 hours away next summer and I am concerned about the baby getting dinged. Although, I suppose that's the responsibility of the movers.

Panny VT would compare more with the Samsung f8000 (not sure what the 7050 is but sounds like an older gen model). Do you watch a lot of tv during the day or with lights on everywhere? Do you care how the picture looks when lights are on?

I am considering upgrading my 7 year old Samsung 50 inch HL5087w DLP TV in a few months. I love my TV since there is no burn in, minimal input lag, great picture, and sound but its starting to die.

What is the best option that has all of the above now?
