Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

Sharing some feedback as I got the Switch 2 day one. Lately I have been using it exclusively as a handheld console (tabletop) and frankly, the experience as been a disappointment.

I play a lot of old games and retro looking games, and there are issues that really bother me.

First of all, the upscale from 720 to 1080. This ruins pixel art games. All Switch 1 games still render at 720 and then Switch 2 upscale at 1080. Integer scaling basically dies because of this. NSO apps, both Curse of the Moon games, Sonic Mania, Monster World Collection : everything has a blurry effect applied to it.

Second : with that shitty upscale comes the second issue : shimmering. All these games get an awful shimmering when scrolling. This is bad, looks bad, and should not exist.

Third : the screen is awful for these games. Side scrollers are awfully blurry. Sonic Mania is basically unplayable as far as I am concerned. Slow scrolling shimmers. Fast scrolling is so blurry you can't see anything in the background. Very bad experience.

Fourth : I discovered that the autonomy is very bad. 3 hours of Switch 1 game and you have to charge the battery again. Playing Curse of the Moon, an 8 bits looking game lol.

Annoying but anecdotical : you can't wake up the console with the NSO controllers. The NSO is a largely inferior experience on Switch 2, which sucks because we pay for it. They need to patch all apps to output 1080p ASAP.

However, older third party Switch 1 games will never be patched, you can be sure of it. We are screwed with Curse of the Moon, Sonic Mania or Monster World Collection. And probably a ton of other retro collections.

Very dissatisfied with the console as a handheld gaming device for my summer vacations. Give me my OLED back Nintendo !

Damn, sorry to hear 😕

Been absolutely loving my Switch 2, especially going back to older games that now look and run much smoother.

Maybe you want a system that can do much more under the hood like a ROG Ally...?

kinda regretting getting the switch 2. I'm so bored with it. And all these ports of old ps5 games. I've already played all of them on my PS5. Feels pointless. Only thing worth playing are Nintendo games and they're so scarce.

Just finished Daemon x machina titanic scion demo. I enjoyed it very much. Definitely copping this, especially since the game is fully on the cartridge. Hopefully people support it so it sends a message to the publishers.

This is were I'm at too. I'm selling mine today, it's been just one disappointment after another.
Nintendo games just aren't that interesting anymore for me and it feels like a Switch Pro.
MKW just didn't hit the mark personally and my PS5 Pro offers all of the gaming experience I need and Astro Bot has left Mario in the dust for me.

Please tell me more............. ;)

Yes, I finally bought one. DK Bananza pushed me over the edge, lol. Sold off my OLED to help fund it. Love it so far. It's everything I wanted from the original Switch and then some.
I knew you would cave in. I am still on Mario Kart World around 65 hours in and still loving it. I do plan to get Bananza at some point though. Glad you are enjoying it. For me I love the way it's very similar to the original Switch... But at the same time very different.

IMO Nintendo themselves need to do something to address this. Surely they can apply a solution where if you are playing a Switch game on Switch 2 it automatically applies the Switch Dock setting to Switch 2 handheld. A lot of Switch games docked were 1080p.

It's only a small thing but I love the fact we have a decent resolution home screen now. The original one was capped at 720p and was pretty obvious. Also the new rounded edges on the game icons and the new changing colour highlighting graphic is very cool as well.

Yeah, I love the little details on the UI. Another small thing I like is the cute little sound the console makes when booting it up 😃 But the best favorite small thing is that you can connect to Bluetooth headset and speaker through the quick menu without going in to settings. I hope Nintendo patch in so we can also change the 90-100% charging from there too.

Forgot about that. Did you get the new pro controller?. I like the headphone socket as I have some pretty good IEM's.

No. I think it's overpriced. I ordered this one instead.

From what I understand devs code the setting for each mode (Docked/Handheld), and handheld is always hard-capped at 720p - even with a variable resolution solution applied.

So pretty much all games are going to need an update from the actual developers as it's not a hardware issue.

I agree with you up to a point. The original Switch pro controller was an awesome piece of kit. My launch model is still going strong...... Although it's so shiny it's like a mirror. The new Switch 2 pro controller is just amazing and if you look at the cost compared to how long you are going to use it.... It's pretty decent value.. But like I said once you demo one you will be converted. And the battery still seems to have the mystical levels of the original.

Must admit the one you have opted for looks pretty cool though.

I don't doubt its quality. Had the original Pro controller and it was great. But I do find Nintendo accessories to be very pricey. Just like Sony, they are gouging the prices way too much in this area. I find third party accessories to be just as good, and priced much more reasonable.

The reason I ordered this particular controller though was the wake up function. I have 8bit do ultimate and it works great with S2 but you can't wake up the console, which is annoying. I also have an ROG Ally X which I use as a hybrid setup just like S2 and with this new controller I can unify both my systems without having two separate controllers.

Hyrule Warrios somehow runs at 1080p in Handheld mode

Very good point, unfortunate it's the odd one out I think. That game had 1080p support for handheld mode in the original Switch release, which from what I understand is an extremely uncommon occurrence in general (because why would you do that when the max resolution is 720p?).

I would really like this. However, when I see how even the most basic Switch 1 games drain the battery life, I am skeptical. Their technical solution to run Switch 1 games does seem to have a pretty high battery cost.

Indeed. There is also the Langrisser I & II Collection that runs 1080 in handheld, if I am correct.

Abxylute shows off the upcoming N6 Switch Deck and N9 Switch Grip Controller for the Switch 2

Article:
Abxylute has two new controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2 on the way. The controllers are the N6 Switch Deck and the N9 Switch Grip, both of which are designed to replace the Switch 2's Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Abxylute N6 Switch Deck

The Abxylute N6 is a controller akin to the Nitro Deck for the Nintendo Switch. To use it, owners will have to detach the Switch 2's Joy-Con 2 controllers and then slot in the handheld into the N6 for better ergonomics. When inserted, the Switch 2 connects to the controller via a USB-C connector.

Abxylute hasn't revealed the technical details of the N6 controller and how much it will cost. It also hasn't decided yet which colors will be available as it plans to run a poll to see what users prefer. However, it has provided renders of the controller in five colors including purple, pink, and black.

Abxylute N9 Switch Grip Controller

The Abxylute N9 Switch Grip Controller also lets Switch 2 owners ditch the Joy-Cons 2 for a grip controller that connects to the handheld via USB-C. However, unlike the N6, the N9 has support for display output. It also has four back buttons and a kickstand. Abxylute says its functionality and feel is similar to the Abxylute S9 mobile controller for Android and iOS.

Like the N6 controller, there is no info about the pricing and availability of the N9 Switch Grip Controller but Abxylute has revealed that these details will likely be revealed in October.

There hasnt been a new 3d Mario game since 2017 with Mario Odyssey...

I love Astro Bot too but comparing that to Mario when we havent had a new Mario 3d mainline title in 8 years isnt a valid comparison. Whatever next 3d Mario we get (hopefully soon), will be amazing im sure!

The only thing kind of putting me off Switch 2 at the minute is those game key cards. And I say kind of because I'll probably end up getting one soon anyway and hope they sort them out further down the line.

Last night I booted up Wario Land 4 and WL3 to be able to access the stickers for those games.
And I finally found out where the Switch 2's screen performs what is probably its worst.

GBA is somewhat acceptable, even if the ghosting clearly makes stuff blurry in movement.
But GBC… it's completely unacceptable, and borderline unplayable. I had played WL3 in its entirety on the OG Switch with no particular problem, but I couldn't last two minutes with it on S2. It's possibly worse than playing on an OG monochrome GB. It's not even blurry, you can literally see two distinctly different frames onscreen as soon as anything moves. Truly disastrous performance there.

Sure, I have several devices where I could play those games and they perform fine in docked mode, of course. It's possible that the resolution of NSO games hasn't been optimized for the new screen, and optimizing it may mitigate the problem. As it stands right now, though, that screen is unusable for low-res games.

You guys can do whatever you want I guess, but this kind of talk is nuts. The console hasn't even been out for three months. If you expect it to last the same amount of time on market as Switch 1 (8 years) then we are approximately 3% of the way into the console's lifespan. And they have so far released first party-wise:

Two fully exclusive first party retail games both 85+ on Metacritic
Two smaller digital-only exclusive games, not as well received but still a thing
Five GameCube games on the Switch 2 exclusive NSO app
Four paid enhancements to Switch 1 games, two of which contain significant new content
A dozen free upgrades to Switch 1 games for visuals and performance

I'm not sure what more you could've possibly expected, like did you think they were gonna come out and drop ten first party games from all their top franchises in the first two months? Are you that dumb?

Hmm..I've Been playing several games (Metroid Zero Mission, Kirby Amazing Mirror, etc) in handheld mode on Switch 2 and I honestly haven't noticed any issues at all...I'll continue looking at the GBAs performance on Switch 2 but so far I've been enjoying it very much.

Thanks for pointing this out though. 👍

We're 2+ months in gents and we're still repeating the same things - which leads me to believe that :

A) There's really some panel lottery at play here

B) It's the PS Portal 59.96Hz stutter all over again where some people were able to see it and found it unacceptable (me included) while others couldn't/didn't care.

For me, the biggest problem so far is the absolute lack of PROPER support where there's no native S2 versions of NEW games (NG Ragebound, Shinobi), no real updates for older titles, no news about what the fook is going on/how they're gonna handle game versions from now on, whether the BC list will grow (framerate/resolution patches) and so on so forth...

New system + desperate need for multiple parts/production lines?

It wouldn't surprise me if a percentage of the earlier builds were of..."alternative passing" quality.

Like I said, GBA is slightly blurry, but it's not a dealbreaker.
It's the one GBC game I tried that ran really terribly.

I played Metroid Fusion on it. I didn't notice anything untoward. Looked and played good to me.

I thought Wind Waker on tv had a frame rate/field of vision problem as it gives me a bit of a headache.
