I gotta say I really liked the use of flashbacks in this episode. I like that it didn't spend a lot of time on it and we have to just imagine what lead up to them. Like the shot of Carol burning the bodies it didn't bother showing her getting them there. Good stuff.

Agreed, quite enjoyed the opening one especially.

Also, nothing really slowed the episode down for me, it may not have offered a lot of forward progress, but really it was pretty quick for the type of stuff it was doing. The natural teamwork as Daryl and Carol worked through the areas and around the zombies for example just kept things moving.

I could see some might call it boring because some people want something with a quicker pace or more action/immediacy but I liked the ambiance and the whole melancholy atmosphere like the avclub review put it. Really cool vibe. Of course it's only good in spurts and it does seem like we're getting back to action soon.

Man, AvClub are all over the place with their reviews lately. How was that episode worth an A-?
he explains it in the review but it's not surprising. When zack was a walking dead hater and being very harsh on the show he always said he wished it had more subtext and better character moments and more focus. Not surprising he has been enjoying the gimple era more and more as it goes on.

edit: Sepinwall liked it plenty as well. For similar reasons.

Exactly. I could understand if the entirety of the season had been episodes like this, but the change of pace to prep for the finale was nice. This also had a lot of good character moments, something that I feel has been hit or miss in the past.

Carol is actually like a granny I mean seriously look at the picture just above.

It's cool if you're into her and all but she's hardly a "milf"

The hell? Melissa McBride isn't even 50 years old yet.

I mean, I'm gay and I still think she's an incredibly attractive woman.

In other news, lol at all of the "Carol is obviously a trojan horse faking illness" people from a couple of weeks ago.

Yes. And yeah, it's good it doesn't look like there be much of a wait before we get back to the action.

I liked the episode, but probably because I like these characters. Their interaction is so natural. Daryl is blunt and to the point. A man of few words but they're all hard words. Carol has come a long way to get to where she is, which is essentially almost to where Daryl is.

She almost shot Noah to get their stuff back. Daryl was ready to leave him to die.

In each case the other served as the conscience.

The smoke, the reference to ashes... Carol is the phoenix, rising from the fires in her life.

Good episode. I liked it. I like what the writers are capable of doing when they settle in to do it.

That being said, the pacing in the first three episodes of the year was very fast, and now they've slowed it down a ton, which leads to some unevenness.

Oh I for one can't wait for Crazy Rick to be unleashed on the hospital.

:D

Hells yeah.

Got a chuckle out of him basically saying it just like we all were a couple of weeks ago during the Beth ep, lol. "These are guys are assholes, can't wait until Daryl/Carol/Rick is unleashed on them"

Just saw it. That van shot is ridicustupid. Why and how, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, does someone decide to suddenly drive-AND PARK!-a van right in the ONE van-sized gap along the entire run of the bridge, PERFECTLY, and not causing any scratches along the side? Either they've got the driving skills of Jesus or they got bored one afternoon and wanted to play a game the equivalent of parallel park.

Or the other possibility is, the van smashed that particular guardrail off. But if that's the case why in the hell did that work in the first place? Was the guardrail loose? Who would loosen that one single guardrail to make it easy to knock off the bridge w/o crumpling the front of the van? Does the van's grill from a Gran Turismo game? I just...I just don't get it.

Yeah it's a fictional story and zombies are already a big stretch but when even the zombies adhere to the laws of physics while a van doesn't, that's some massive disconnect for the viewer.

Why couldn't Carol just look both ways before crossing the street?
Because no one does it in real life anyway.

I can't believe people didn't like the episode when it answers one of the greatest questions of the season. How Carol's face got clean after Terminus.

I enjoyed the episode. Both Carol and Daryl are so damaged that they can't let themselves acknowledge how much they care for each other.

I love people that are bitching about falling van physics in their post-apocalyptic zombie drama.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I honestly thought the episode was badly cut. They did the Abraham flashbacks better than the Carol flashback/intercuts to lead up to the modern moment. It felt like the Abraham backstory was part of the reason for the last episode to make Eugene's betrayal all the more impactful.

Whereas here Carol's stuff... just doesn't gain any traction or foothold in being "needed' for the episode outside the monologue between Daryl and her.

The overpass drop off was also bad. I think they could've done without that and banged Carol up more with the car hit. But guess the next time we're back there with Carol/Beth, she'll "magically be better" despite dropping off an overpass and being hit by a car (at 15-20MPH? granted) shortly later.

I actually enjoyed the ep, my brother on the other hand thought it was boring as shit.

I am worried that Carol will die for the mid season finale though.

Episode was boring as all fuck. So was last week.

This show just doesn't work for me on any level if Rick isn't involved.

yeah.. the storytelling structure this season as wack as fuck

we're still waiting to see who daryl crawls out of the bushes with 3 episodes ago
