‘Nintendo is losing their identity’: Shuhei Yoshida says Switch 2’s focus on power is what other companies would do

The mini dvds while limited in size loaded hella fucking fast.
Faster than anything ps2, xbox, or dreamcast could do.
This is something that gets forgotten a lot, GC has crazy fast load times. Hell even luigis mansion might as well have been a cartridge game with how fast it loaded within mere seconds of the GC logo vanishing the game had already loaded.

Isn't Sony the one that's trying to build a hybrid console and following Nintendo?

And speaking of losing their identity, many of Sony's games are focused on identity politics and social issues.

Who want's that in their games? Sony wasn't like this a decade ago.

Switch 2's graphical capabilities are closer to PS5 than last gen between Switch and PS4.

They've been known for trying new ideas, Switch 2 has zero innovation.
nes, snes. N64 they didn't even 'innovate' to discs, they stayed on cartridge. They did add analog, and later rumble, though. But 2D->everyone was throwing new ideas at the wall at the teime. gamecube? literally the same as the competition, only difference is silly small discs. gameboy, gameboy color, gameboy pocket, gameboy advance, literally 0 new ideas kek

This nintendo is known for "new ideas" is literally just a modern idea from wii ds onwards. Besides, is the mouse controller not your silly 'innovation' gimmick? hell I'd say it's more innovative than a handheld that can plug into the tv. PSP already did that.

So a former Sony exec in the last month said Sony and MS should stop chasing power and be like Nintendo and now another is saying Nintendo is ending up like the rest?

Personally I think Sony and Nintendo have a good strategy.

Same could be said about Sony and their push for GAAS trash, leaving their bread and butter, aka First Party Single Player games, behind, but not seeing him complaining about that 🤔

His career was like 37 years or so at Sony. He bleeds blue. I think Shu is amazing but I would take any comment from him about Nintendo with a pinch of salt.

He's right, but I am not sure what Nintendo could have done that was unique and new. But maybe that's why I don't work at Nintendo, I can't come up with anything.

Nintendo couldn't either. That's why the big innovations are mouse movement and 20fps video chat.

If you read the whole interview he's not wrong tbf.

He's simply staying Nintendo have always been about innovation and being slightly bonkers and pointing out that the Switch 2 is an iteration of a very successful product, with little in the way of innovation - which is unlike Nintendo.

I do think Nintendo is scared of changing the formula too much and falling into the Wii U hole. They've said as much in the past couple years.

But I also don't know what they could do. They tried to experiment with the Switch and some of it was great (Ring Fit) and some of it was a total flop (Labo). I think if Labo was more successful they might have tried to put out a VR device.

Because that's what people want, you don't fix what's not broken, Switch being long in the tooth for years now, Nintendo don't need to create some BS "innovative" new device that could not attract anyone and get a Wii-U situation again, S2 just works. it's a more powerful device than the previous device and that's OK 🤷‍♂️

I agree.

But what Toshida is saying is, IMO, true. If there is one console manufacturer that embraces crazy it's Nintendo. See them play it safe makes perfect sense, that yesteryear Nintendo might not have done.

It's wild how Nintendo officially decided that users don't care about fast load times.
Nintendo consoles in general loaded games really fast and now they don't.
