‘Unknown 9: Awakening’ Arrives To 200 Steam Players, Poor Reviews

This game is a bad example. Unkown 9 didn't have some awesome lore that they changed. It's just a regular bad game. I don't see how it relates at all to the Dragon Age type of rot that it's getting compared to. People have been making bad games with broads as the main character for as long as video games have existed.

Just look at that Concord-like downward trajectory.

Honest question: if they had known a few months ago that this is what the launch #s would look like, would they even have proceeded with the launch?

Even if the game were basically finished, I have to think that the cost of launching it and supporting it wouldn’t be justified by the tiny # of sales they got. Not to mention the damage to Bandai Namco’s brand.

the only relation i could see to DA it's the fact that people in position of creative power want to make something niche to be adopted by 90% of the market.

I wonder if it's worse than Inversion...

And just like with Inversion, I also have some curiosity to try it out...

This game has a lot of factors working against it- one of which being that it's just part of a "narrative universe" and feels like its supposed to rope you into a bunch of extended media to get the whole story - including comic books, novels, and a fucking podcast of all things. So it's really hard to get invested in the story of this game when I know for a fact I would never engage in any of the other content. That results in a hard pass. And if you're only in it for the gameplay- other games have already been there and done it better.
Sounds like FFXV

Why do we care about another non-descript generic slop? Don’t give it oxygen.

It's so weird to me why GAF seems so overly captivated with AA games like this. I mean a game that's generic and boring isn't making money. What's the news here?

The odd thing is they are trying to make this into a big franchise.

But googling the franchise last week, it started with I think two obscure books made in 2020 and 2021.

How Namco took that and started making a game out of it back in 2020 is weird.

Gamers: "Yeah!!!"

Sorry for the double post.

Looking at the Steam reviews, it looks like a lot of people got this game for free with a new AMD CPU. They're posting reviews warning people it sucks and not to pay for it. :messenger_hushed:

The budget on this, assuming it’s not just greatly underachieved, seems to be at least closer to that market size.

That AMD promotion campaign absolutely bit the devs/publisher in the ass. The game now has 70% negative reviews. I think most of them are people who got a game for free they would never have bought themselves. Without that giveaway most of the reviews would have been written by people who were interested enough in the game's premise to actually buy it and inclined to give this game a fair chance.

The interest in this game is so low there's no developer credits listing on mobygames yet, but someone posted the video.
It's a 21m one listing a lot of support studios (including mo-cap + trailer specialists) and localization teams. While I don't think this is on Concord's level, Bandai Namco got screwed over when they bought Refletor's U9 sales pitch.

while Bandai could be considered as a niche publisher, unknown 9 performed worse than your average weebo game.

for DA... it has been so long that who knows how much pull that IP actually have.

Quite the opposite. AMD paid for the copies they are bundling.
But instead of getting a good game that helps selling gpus and cpus, they got a turd that everyone is joking about.
Without the copies that AMD bought, this game would be an even greater flop.

I guess it’s namco’s money. But this game was in dev since 2020 I think. I remember googling the game and somewhere it said the was mentioned briefly it was in development.

So despite being a lousy game, good on the studio milking it for 4 years worth of salaries for workers.

Getting paid for a low quality effort. Congrats.

Was this a AA game? I assumed the credits would be much shorter on a game with a lighter budget.

If it was in development for that long, no way this game didn't have a AAA budget.

Googling it, maybe I was wrong that it was in dev since 2020, but here’s a trailer from 2020 at least so they had something going on. Google say the game was originally supposed to come out in 2021, which is odd since the books came out in 2020 and 2021. So either the game was already in the works before 2020 maybe coinciding with the books??? Or this game meant to be a fast made game launching in 2021? Who knows.

Artwork looks so different too.

This was supposed to be some huge trans-media IP, at least that was the hope. Books, games, TV/movie. They were going all out on this. So makes sense if that was the goal that the game and books started at the same time.

This is fishy. My old man says "If something looks strange it's because it's strange". Given how rushed and unpolished the game is, the whole idea of a "transmedia universe" seems a scam. We have to start assuming that these flops aren't only a matter of stupidity by the one buying the project but also bad faith from the one selling it.

This game always felt so strange, so seeing these numbers isn't too surprising. It felt like the entire project lacked passion and was always meant to have this trajectory. No marketing, no excitement, no passion. I'm wondering if it's something they contractually had to release, but didn't really care about otherwise? No clue. It's just so strange.

Looks like layoffs at the studio today.
Another woke trash game rightfully flopping just like so many of them throughout the entire year.

Recent Reviews: 59% Mixed (37)
All Reviews: 45% Mixed (74

The low review count is actually worse than the low review score, not even 100 reviews lmao.

Junk studio. On the plus side it seemed like they had hardly any sales, so it didn't burn too many gamers' wallets.

That's the problem with gaming. It's digital, so you can have 10,000 studios making a zillion games. Some great, some good, most trash. You dont get that in brick and mortar stores because even though you'll get some bad products here and there (moreso in dollar stores), traditional big box stores will carry best sellers and weed out bad products. There's only so much space in the store. With digital storefronts you can get anyone making junk and easily releasing it.
