14 minutes of Dragon's Crown gameplay

Wasn't interested in this at all until I started seeing more gameplay footage. It's actually looking pretty great now. I'm still concerned about replayability (I'm not usually into standard brawlers, and while I know that there's loot and stuff I don't know how far that can go), but I'm definitely going to pick this up for my Vita.

... but it could also be argued that this is a weakness of the games character designs in the first place; such a joke isn't out of place, for a game that features a design like the sorceress, and her exaggerated official (?) twin basketball statue, for example.

I'm still not seeing a weakness in any of the character designs. The joke wouldn't go over many heads that have witnessed the Sorceress, but that doesn't inherently mean the character design is at all shoddy. If I had issue with it at all, I'd first point a finger at the people making such jokes rather than the Kamitani's art being Kamiitani's art.

On the title, I don't really care what it ends up being. I don't mind a beat 'em up reference, breast joke or anything else.

I totally agree, we need to remember that not everybody is going to want to play this game just because it has comedy size boobs.

We need to highlight the Amazon's arse too!

Haha. Some would prefer no behind left behind, I see!

I really like the character designs myself. I don't really want "boobs" or anything like that in the OT title, though, as humorous at it might be. I feel like it'd just spark a bunch of negative comments and derail the thread, instead of just being a nice place to discuss the game.

Dragon's Crown |OT| Dragons for Dinner
Dragon's Crown |OT| W-W-Welcome to the (not) DnD World!
Dragon's Crown |OT| Everything is Larger Than Life
Dragon's Crown |OT| Of Dragons and Large...Foods

I don't know what I'm typing anymore.

I was joking when I said the OT would be called "Boobs |OT| Dragon's Crown." I have a subtitle in mind that is not going to be (K)otaku-related, not-NSFW, not anything related to breasts, butts, abs, or waifus, but is going to be a subtle nod to a prior work of Kamitani's.

I know I'm not alone when I say I've been excited for Dragon's Crown since the first time I saw it in action. It isn't about the breasts or butts or elf waifus. I grew up when arcades were more than just the name of a companion in New Vegas, when you'd pour in quarter after quarter playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, or even The Simpsons. There's more to that genre than Mystara, and there have been far too few games like it since the nineties ended. Dragon's Crown is a renaissance of this beloved genre, combined with two others things I love: Vanillaware's beautiful artwork and Hitoshi Sakimoto's moving music.

TL;DR: I'm taking the OT seriously. I'm sure there will be more than enough people posting breasts, butts, and kotaku links, but that will say more about them than it will about the game.

Anyone know if this game will be 1080p native?

I would also like to know this.

And, I know the NA version will have dual audio for the characters, but does anyone know if dual audio also extends to the narrator (and the character-narrators)?

Thank you. Also Vita preorder payed in full. Hopefully online will be lag free, voice chat will work nicely, and the Sakimoto soundtrack will blow everyone away as usual.

I was going to make a suggestion before this, but now I'm gonna have to say it;

It's about the sexy food!

I figured you were. :P

I'm glad you're the one making the thread. Can't wait to see it.

This is second hand information but a poster on gamefaqs was at EVO and the Atlus reps at the Dragon's Crown setup/booth apparently said that the in-battle audio was dual audio, but that it would only be English for the narration/npc voices/story dialog.

Here's his post: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633261-dragons-crown/66684144#13

I've been under the impression the game was dual audio... but at the same time Atlus USA are one of the biggest scumbags between their lies and silence. Maybe it'll just be DLC like how the other narration voices can be purchased? Heads will roll if there's no dual audio.... I would gladly pay the extra money for it. Does the Japanese version have English text?

All I got out of that thread is this link and the urge to drown one third of gamefaqs posters in a bathtub. From the SiliconEra article linked:

A narrator tells Dragon Crown’s story and Rannie has a few voiced lines too. I noticed in the options menu the English version of Dragon’s Crown has an option to choose between English and Japanese voiceovers.
So, what we know:
  • Characters can use English or Japanese voices on a per-character basis.
  • Character-narrators can be unlocked through gameplay or through the DLC Voiceover Pack (free for first month, $1.99 after that)
What hasn't been confirmed either way:
  • Narrator and NPC voices might be dual-audio.
  • Character-narrators are probably English-only (but maybe not).
I wish Atlus would update the Dragon's Crown site. Still too many ??? sections for a game that comes out in two weeks.

this game looks awful IMHO, i think muramasa looks much better

I'm still cautious about this game giving me the Vanillaware chills (caused from Muramasa and Odin Sphere), but Dragon's Crown still looks really good from what I've seen. I'm guessing you mean visuals, but I can't imagine what part of it comes of as "awful" to you, especially in comparison to Muramasa (which also had characters with exaggerated physical traits, if you're going there).

That makes sense given that those things serve to give the player information.

I've lost alot of enthusiasm for the title myself as of late. The RPG hooks are too much for my tastes

in wait and see mode atm. gonna see what impressions are like post release

yes that's exactly what i meant, the art style is so over the top and the characters are hideous, i don't like the animations either, ive been following this game for a while now since i am a big fan of 2D games, but nothing that ive seen about this peeks my interest, you compare this to muramasa and it looks bad, muramasa can be a boring game after a while, it gets a bit repetitive but you cant deny that art style and look the game has, i just think they went way to overboard with this look

I'm not denying Muramasa its visuals at all. They're quite well done. However, I'm not seeing the contrast of the two titles in the same way you are. Muramasa is very eastern while Dragon's Crown is western in inspiration of locale.

Perhaps you prefer the Japanese rural fields and ocean side over the ancient ruins and castle tops of Dragon's Crown. There's no crime in preference of either, but I see it as simply "different" rather than "hideous."

you maybe right, sadly that's how i feel about this title, i really hope they release a demo of the game, maybe the gameplay is good and that could ease the dislike i have for its visual art style

Here's a 6 minute shaky cam gameplay vid from EVO 2013:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNiwyhlYmEo

Not sure if posted yet but it shows off a hidden area only accessible by breaking a wall using a mount. The main thing I took from the video is that the wall itself was completely smooth with no hints (as far as I could see; I mean the vid quality isn't the best) that it was breakable. That...excites me.

Hmm? The wall had a very obvious crack in it. It's possible that other parts of the background have similar details so gloss over breakable walls.

From the looks of it, the wall only had cracks because the Fighter was already attacking the wall. When they walked by it originally the cracks weren't there.

However, it was really hard to tell from the shaky cam video, but it looked like there was text displayed at the bottom of the screen saying something about hearing a woman crying from behind the wall, so they do seem to drop hints about these things.

I believe the cracks weren't so obvious until the Fighter started hitting them, but there was a message about hearing a woman crying on the other side of the wall so at least you'd know to look for it. Here's an example of a hidden door that the Wizard opens. I don't know if there were environmental clues, but for that one it looked like Tiki was highlighting it so it wouldn't be too subtle.

Don't know if someone posted it, but despite the Famitsu scores being worthless, the reviewers complained about the following things:
PSV: Since the screen is small, you sometimes lose track of your character.
PS3: Gamepad is much worse than touch controls during instances when you have a cursor on the screen (cooking etc., most likely).

Other than that, they loved it iirc.

Doubt this 'problem' will be exclusive to the Vita version even if the screen is a lot more smaller. OLED and touch controls easily win for me.

Yep, I missed that text about the woman but as you guys said, it was definitely smooth until they were already hitting it.

Well, I don't find it (or any of Kamitani's Arts) "shoddy", but I can't help but feel some things are just kind of... unfortunate?

I cite it as a weakness, because it detracts from the overall achievement of the art in the game. The over-exaggeration crosses the line a bit too far, to where it's often standing out more than the work itself at times.

It weakens the overall solidarity of the work, by tossing in an "issue" that really didn't need to be there in the first place. One gets a feel they're trying to compensate for something lacking in a crude way, when, in reality, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I can't say I feel the same way. I believe any of the character designs only detract from the big picture if a viewer allows it to. I see the entire package absolutely fine. The characters fit in the world well and none of them are an "issue" intrinsically, but simply an "issue" some others have created of their own accord.

I see a fluent world realized through Kamitani's work and not a desperate or crude compensation in any capacity while (rarely, yet) occasionally attempting to wrap my mind around how it could be defined as such at all by others.

I like you. This is what I've been thinking for a while, too.

I don't have permissions to start threads yet so I'm just posting this here. The street date has been broken in Japan. Here's someone livestreaming his playthrough if anyone is interested:

http://ja.twitch.tv/hamayama

Thanks for the link...though I see nothing but a "No device" message, while I hear a lot of game sounds...oh, wait, it's fixed now...or not. Heh. Seems like whoever is streaming it is having issues. Anyway, considering that everyone is speaking in English even though the text is in Japanese, I guess the game is fully dual audio.

The narrator seems to talk a lot more than I expected. Interesting.

Edit: Stream's over, but here's the archive of it: http://www.twitch.tv/hamayama/b/434083566

Yeah the streamer is streaming from Vita and he has technical difficulties very very often. That's why I stopped watching. It got frustrating.

Any way, two things I noticed from this livestream:

1. AI companions are trash. Especially the Elf. She misses her shots way too much and she rarely uses the bow to begin with. There was also a part where there were spiked barricades that you took damage from if you walked into them. The streamer broke the barricade on the lower half of the screen and started to move forward. The AI characters continued to walk into the spikes at the top half and just kept eating the damage repeatedly, forcing the streamer to break the other half as well. But then, I wasn't really expecting much from the AI.

2. I feel like we start stages with way too many lives. I'm hoping it just gets extremely hard later on because the AI was pretty much facetanking all bosses and it didn't matter because they had so many lives that they would always last til the end of the fights.

like Catherine, another game people will forget in 1-2 months....

1)like most of the games? :P
2)chaterine got lots of hype for the story that was intriguing, but the game itself, while better than i was expecting, was nothing memorable.
Dragon's crown on the other hand is being hyped for the game itself, if the game will be as fun as it looks it will be memorable.

cant wait to play this
