2013 Game of the Year Media Picks Thread

? How is it cherry-picking? You said to notify of awards from the media and that's what he's doing.

Pezus admitted as much earlier in the thread when he/she stated they were just following the Last of Us winners. When posting the reader's choice ones even specifically avoided the ones that were for other games. (Though, of course, reader's choice selections don't count for the purposes of this thread anyway).

I think it was just a question of intent. It seems weird to try and stack the numbers in favor of one game or another for media picks, and so on, especially if the intent of the thread is to just get an objective collection of media picks.

If you're going to bring a bias to this then don't bother informing anyone of anything, especially with some of the most obscure sites anyone's seen before. It's pure numbers stacking.

Lol at those random, obscure-ass websites that are being posted. If I make a shitty site in two minutes and make a GOTY list, will I be picked to be on this?

If the list is to have any meaning whatsoever (not that it really means much in the best case scenario), only GOTY's from publications matching objective criteria should be included. An imperfect, but plausible, criteria could be publications that appear on metacritic and aren't individuals (i.e. don't count Sessler, but Rev3 as a whole if they choose one they agree upon). Actually, is Rev3 on metacritic? Well, fuck.

I suspect TLoU will dominate regardless, but Joel & Ellie deserve an honest victory.

I didn't check your current list so excuse me if some of those have already been added!

As a UK gaffer, If you have to take the BT homepage you are really reaching, they aren't exactly famed for their games coverage. TLOU is comfortably in front without stacking it with nonentities. Can't we keep it to reasonably well-known, sizable media sites rather than every crap website that happens to do a top five games? I really don't think we should give some of these sites the same credit as a pick from, say, a national newspaper or a well-known games site. It just devalues the whole thing.

Don't you get it dawg? The more picks a game has means that it's without a shadow of the doubt the game of the year!!!!!1

What 'value' do you really give to media picks anyway?

I find 'em interesting, but I'm not suddenly going to change my mind on what I enjoyed most this year if people drag up 5000 sites voting for Luigi's Mansion 2.

This years 'consensus' GotY is obviously TloU. It's as clear as day, and has been for a while.

Sure. In a parallel world where Grand Theft Auto V didn't come out in 2013.

Oh, I don't give value to media picks at all, similarly to your good self, I've already decided what my faves were.

However, I do give 'value' to the time put in by others to collate the results into an interesting thread worthy of discussion, rather than flood it with every site on the planet that nobody actually reads for the rest of the year. It's like Yahoo news- it's functional but nobody actually credits it's opinion as worth anything on any subject under the sun, it's all slammed out by an intern.

When 30 actually reputable sites have all gone for TLOU and GTA, why bother listing what BT think?

We'll see. I'm willing to bet that TloU 'wins' this thread, and 'wins' GAF GotY.

I dig what you're saying, but ultimately there were no rules laid out in the OP. I'm not sure how you'd choose which outlets were 'worthy', but that's probably what should've happened.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure if those same obscure site all listed GTAV, we wouldn't be having this conversation. OP laid out the rules. Pezus followed them. Trying to go, "buh-buh-buh obscure website!" is moving goalposts to reach an end. There is no specified rule saying which sites or publications are included or excluded from the picks. Now, if the site or publication in question is something that has nothing to do with media of any form and just randomly threw a score out for whatever reason, then sure discount it. However, whining about cherry picking when no rules were laid out and you have just as much of an opportunity as Pezus to find awards for GTAV just looks silly. Being a smart ass isn't going to help you.

Not really sure how a site or publication can not be media of any form, when they are all media by definition- there isn't really an option for them to not be applicable under your terms there.

Still, sure, I don't really care about GTA or TLOU, and picking obscure sites to support my personal pick (currently on zero votes :D ) seems a bit hypocritical given that I just thought it a bit odd to give the BT homepage the same weighting as, say, Edge when nobody gives a monkeys what else they say about games all year round, but I've already conceded the point to SmokeyDave, so fair enough.

Why is it only cherry-picking when I update you on TLoU awards? Surely you don't expect me to do everything for you?

How do you find the sites that gave the award to The Last of Us?

Did you ignore a bunch of sites that gave it to any other game in your search?

Australia representing with the Luigi's Mansion pick, haha. Loved the game, still surprised to see even one place give it GOTY though, considering what it's up against.

I'm also disappointed by the lack of M3DW mentions, though Hadji's post may touch on why it's not getting any. It may not have the immediate pull Galaxy had when you start the game, but past the first 3 worlds the game really starts to shine. It doesn't let up either: 20 hours in and the game is still throwing levels at me with entirely new and fun concepts. This game is huge. It's a bit unfortunate on one hand that they packed the tail end with the incredible stuff, but it really rewards players that want to see everything in the game.
3D world is definitely close to Galaxy-level for me in creativity and design.

Where do you draw the line? A website you don't know might be known by others. Ever thought of the possibility?

Thank you. For fuck's sake people, and OP especially. Don't make a thread that ASKS for people to post GOTY awards and then backtrack when you're not happy with the results.

Again, I post whatever I can find and OP is free to pick what he deems "worthy" out of it.

I use google. And while I HAVE posted a bunch of rewards for other games, I am looking for TLoU picks so naturally I am going to post them when the OP asked for it.

Again, there's nothing stopping other people from looking specifically for GTAV wins if it so pleases them.

OT: Will the OP ever update the OP again? It's been stuck at the same numbers for days.

what is up with bioshock infinite? i was going to buy it since it's $20 right now. a lot of reviewers gave it very high scores but the opinions that matter (the players) are seriously hating on it, or disliking a lot about it, either the gunplay or the boss fights or the limited weapon carrying capacity. even at $20 (and it comes with the first bioshock, which i have never played) i am having doubts about purchasing it. i am cheap and again, player impressions matter way more than "journalists".

In my experience the gameplay was a massive chore. Every fight was another "Ughhh here we go again" and forcing myself to push through to get to the next story segment. I stopped playing it for a week before a friend talked me into finishing it due to its crazy ending which kind of delivered. I would never play it again.

The combat is a lot of fun any time there are skylines involved in it. They allow for a lot of creativity and variety in combat. The main problem is that they aren't used a lot of the time and you're just going through basic FPS combat.

oh so it's basically cutscene->arena->cutscene->arena type of game? that's kinda sad to hear.

There are lots of players who love it though. Opinions simply vary. It wont't be in my top ten as I am more of a mechanics driven gamer, but I do admire the game for its art and story and if you mix up your attacks, the combat can be pretty fun.
