2013 Game of the Year Media Picks Thread

Both GTA5 and TLOU are very deserving.

Personally I would go with GTA5, but I'll be perfectly fine if TLOU ends up getting a few more than it.
No, man, you don't understand. My favourite mainstream story driven AAA TPS not getting GOTY over that other mainstream story driven AAA TPS is outrageous.

So why isn't super mario 3d world getting any? .

Easy, Mario and in general the types of games Nintendo makes, aren't in vogue anymore. Really as things are now, your best bet for a GOTY is to

1. Ride on that technology/production level curve.
2. Have a featured story that is either blockbuster (Last of Us, Bioshock) or subversive (indie games).

Go through the lists. See how many sites have TLoU, BS, and GTAV listed back to back to back. See how many sites have Gone Home, Papers Please and Standly's Parable listed back to back to back. These types of games are very popular now. Now a days Nintendo games only have a slightly better chance of winning than MMOs, MOBAs, sports, racing, fighting, character action games, puzzle games, almost anything 2d, and RTS (or strat games in general).

Yup. Pushing gaming towards mainstream acceptance as an artform is where critics are at right now. Mechanically-focused games aren't going to be winning these awards again anytime soon.

I don't normally go for goty things, but I think paradox deserve a lot of credit this year (and last) for their huge increase in quality of product as well as producing absolute quality strategy games. EU4 is just amazing and by far my most enjoyed game this year.

It's pissing me off that someone could even suggest that our favorite mainstream AAA TPS doesn't transcend the confines of human storytelling and ultimate character development better than that other AAA TPS.

Having played both, i think they are the best games of this year, but Link Between Worlds also deserves a mention, granted its a handheld game and those never win.

The differences between GTA and TLOU is that GTA5 was a great, fun game, but its not something i will remember 2-3 years from now. At best ill remember Trevor and his crazy ass antics, but that is about it. Everyone remembers GTA3 because it was the first 3D one that really paved the way for open world games on consoles and Vice City because it so perfectly replicated the 1980s. But GTA5, a fantastic game, simply is not memorable in that way.

TLOU has a
haunting ending, that can be viewed in so many different ways. It can be a happy ending but it also be a insanely disturbing one.
The whole game is extremely memorable, the opening in particularity is mind blowing.

More Rev3 GOTY lists, they're definitely not predictable.

I need like four weeks to finish up GotY stuff since school has pushed me behind. Be kind guy who is doing it.

To me, it seems a little unfair to state someone else has an absurd position regarding the quality of these two titles without experiencing each title for yourself.

No, I feel pretty confident saying that it is absurd to call one near-universally lauded cinematic-storytelling/action game winning GOTY awards against another near-universally lauded cinematic-storytelling/action game a "tragedy."

The fact that GTA has been an influential and significant franchise in the past should have absolutely no bearing on how this iteration is judged against TLoU and other GOTY contenders. Neither should the fact that it didn't experience a significant backlash.

The influence of GTA in the past is essential to understanding how the current entry came to be so significant, as well as for establishing the stakes in play for each new entry. GTAV isn't a case where a game sold well because everyone was reacting to the brand; it's a case where the people looking for something specific and the game, broadly speaking, delivered to them in pretty dramatic terms.

Those types of movies are absolutely fun and entertaining, but I'm not about to start lobbying for them to win Best Picture.

In Oscar terms, Ben-Hur won in 1959, The Sound of Music in 1965, The Sting in 1973, Rocky in 1976, The Silence of the Lambs in 1991, Titanic in 1997, Gladiator in 2000, and Return of the King in 2003. Popcorn movies are quite well-established in the Best Picture category. Games are, just by default, much more popcorny and oriented around visceral pleasure than films are, so the idea of a summer blockbuster or "popcorn game" winning is... completely normal.

So why isn't super mario 3d world getting any?

It's getting a lot of play in top-10 lists but not much traction as a #1 pick, which says to me that people are really enjoying the game but maybe finding it to lack some of the surprising uniqueness and je ne sais quoi of, say, Super Mario Galaxy.

Good! Came here because so far every GOTY list I've seen doesn't have Last of Us on it. Always those people that try to be the different one and chose non-popular games, was getting bummed that LoU wasn't being called out. It is the best game of they year.
The Last of Us won Amazon's GotY.

Amazon does this? Woa. Nice list

Personally:

1. Super Mario 3D World
2. Bioshock Infinite (Don't care what you guys think, the ending tugged me, poor Songbird).
3. Last of Us
4. GTAV

There isn't a fifth because this year there hasnt been enough games worth being called GOTY.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I'd love to see Mario (or something like Zelda, SMT4, Ys, Tearaway) win, but judging from the majority of games in the OP, the media obviously cares more about presentation and 'storytelling' than actual gameplay or level design.

And when both the storytelling and gameplay are top of the line, it makes for a real memorable, GOTY level experience.

Yeah The Last of Us had no gameplay at all.

For fuck's sake people. It's the overall experience that counts, and TLoU has that in space (so does GTAV...)

Different strokes for different folks. Gameplay is still the most important part of the overall experience to me, though.

Clearly the media has not played 3D World yet. Or doesn't want to give GOTY to a game on a "dead" platform.

Well, whatever.
