80s style synth-pop/electro synth/cyberpunk music

Out of curiosity, if you are getting the special editions why get the standard ones too?

I'm a sucker for different releases, artwork, packaging and gotta catch 'em all. I've been buying artists/albums that I like on nearly every format/editions I can get my hands on, digital being the last resort.

I'm not one for megaposts, but just some random finds I figured to share. Figure this could tide folks over for a couple days until the album of the year is out on Friday. I always love finding new stuff and just finding how much of this stuff is out there to be discovered.

Some great synthpop with this release from Midnight Mantics..

City of Dreamers

Some more vocal tracks on this great album from The Northern Lights, titled Nostalgia.

Teenage Wasteland

The bandcamp description for this one should appeal to folks here.."Retröxx debut EP.
If you're a fan of old school action and horror flix (and their soundtracks), Dance With The Dead, John Carpenter, Lost Years, Perturbator, Dynatron, Mitch Murder etc....well then...THIS IS FOR YOU!"

And this is a bit more "aggressive" I guess, but not really. Just some faster pace stuff.

And another one to watch out for is the debut EP "First Contact" by Papillon Rising. Great funk-synth stuff going on, I guess ala Chromeo is an easy comparison. Here's the single (funny video) Things are Looking Up

My Gunship LP arrived today, I like the way it looks but the outer sleeve is a little flimsy for my tastes. Also no spine which is quite annoying. Will give it a listen later.

Also the stickers they used on the sleeve are rather wonky but I don't know if that is by design.

EDIT: Listening to it now and despite it being a picture disc it sounds great, very little background noise. I have a decent system too and normally picks this stuff up.

EDIT 2: Side B is worse than Side A... Not too bad though.

Received mine today too, I know what you mean about the sleeve being a bit flimsy, but it is very authentic to the original C64 disk that it's based on. Thought the B side of the pic disc was a lazy design, could've been better.

Have you tried the cheat codes yet?

Where can I try them? I thought they were just little puns for the download code.

That new Trevor Something is fantastic.

Looks like I overlooked his last album too going by his page, I need to get on that.

Trevor Something's new album is okay...his is a classic example of vocals undermining the quality of the album for me. Do It Again is a fantastic track but I find the subject and delivery of his vocals a tad cringey for my tastes on just about every other track, just my opinion.

Going to listen to this in full before commenting.

Bought after listening to Daytona and Vampires alone

Eh, I don't see a Trevor album without his vocals ever being a thing. He is his voice.
I'm not a big fan of Soulless Computer Boy. Aside from it being completely distanced from the 80's aesthetic in favor of something more vaporwave esque the songs just are not memorable at all. Girlfriend is ok, Do It Again is a years old single, and The Real You is the one song I think I can say I really like. And after those songs it just goes into atmospheric instrumentals, probably the lightest stuff he's ever produced.

Compared to Synthetic Love, Trevor Something Does Not Exist, Lost Memories and Death Dream this is a major disappointment. It even doesn't feel like a full new Trevor Something album so I'm hoping this was a stopgap and there's something bigger on the way.

So I just listened to the new The Midnight album and to be honest I really didn't like it. I think I will pass on the vinyl release. I only really liked Vampires and Crockett's revenge. The vocals the majority of the time just sound bad and cheesy (not in a good way).

I don't mind vocals in my synthwave songs but I find that male singers just often don't fit the style of it, in my opinion anyway. I think the only time male vocals have worked for me is with Gunship and even then some of their songs make me wince a bit.

Just listened to the new The Midnight. Good album except for Nighthawks and Lonely City. What the fuck were they thinking with that autotune shit? Definitely ruined the vibe of the album when I got to those two songs.

Yeah. I asked myself is this even synthwave anymore.

Not a fan of the auto tune either. But it was fire until then.

For me, MN84 will always embody the genre. What's he up to? His last album on bandcamp was back in 2012. I saw this song got huge last year.

I took a peek at his Facebook page to find out what happened to Miami Nights 1984. His absence is explained in this post he made back in February:

I just want everyone to know that I've been silent for a good reason..
I keep getting asked questions about when the new album is coming out, and there have been a lot of reasons for the delay. I've erased almost every idea from the past couple of years and started fresh. I want this album to be something special for all of us but more importantly myself. Believe me when I say I've been going crazy in the studio writing lately and its been a great adventure. This album will feature 90% analogue equipment and the vibe is SLOW & CHILL.
I know everyone wants another "Ocean Drive" but I think you'll appreciate the 80-100BPM vibe of this for the summer.
I'll be posting some of the tracks in the near future and the release to follow shortly after.
Yes I'm also looking into physical releases ;)
Thank you for your patience
Mike

While we're on the subject of synthwave pioneers, it looks like Lazerhawk will be releasing a new album soon! This post is from July:

Where have I been?!?! Sorry but, real life was out of hand there for a while. First my studio monitors blew up then, my studio PC died. I was just able to get everything back up and running today after a month or more hiatus. Before the PC died I was able to finish the mastering on about eight of the tracks and received some KILLER vocals for another. Sooooooo, I need to get the vocal edit sent to _______, master the remaining six tracks and we should be ready to go! Hope everyone is having a great summer! You'll be hearing from me soon!

Survive and Cliff Martinez are not the only ones doing cool synth soundtracks this year, check out the new one from Zombie Zombie:

I much prefer that artists take their time with releases and really make them special. Don't just churn out a new "LP" every other month :D (yes i'm looking at you Sellorekt/LA Dreams and Alpha Boy for example)

I agree wholeheartedly. Some artists seem to be in a hurry to release as many tracks as possible. Quality trumps quantity every time.

That said, there are a few artists I'd love to see some new material from. Starcadian, Le Cassette and Kavinsky come to mind.

Anyway, this sounds like an upcoming album to keep an eye on:

Yeah some don't really ever make a good second album or change genres too much with the followups. And many are still one guy with a laptop and life changes might prevent making new music beyond a couple singles.

And Daft Punk is too busy nowadays to continue the Kavinsky -project :D

Listened to the new The Midnight album, thought it was pretty good except the two already overtalked ones. Really enjoyed Daytona and Jason and the other two already released before.

With new Trevor Something i came to the realization this is just not my type of synthpop.

Trevor Somethings evolution on his new album is... weird, man. He's obviously trying to distance himself from the 80s moniker, but now it's just so generic.
